nuro
First post, hope i'm in the right place. Ok, so i'm pretty happy at the moment. The installation on my 8710w is working after my third install. Installed using iatkos v5i: Stock kernel - only extra selected was nvinject and intel ahci sata. Wired ethernet is working - intel 82566mm Wireless i wont get working now, according to some research - intel 4965abg Audio - soundmax chipset Graphics - nvidia quadro fx1600m - using nvinject - CI and QE enabled I had to hunt kexts for the audio and wired internet. One last thing that really gets to me: My boot times are insane. It takes 5 minutes to boot. It boots fine (using -v), then quickly gets to a black screen, where it just hangs for a couple of minutes, and then continues normally. Any help would be appreciated. ttnt2k
That's awesome, I just got a 8710w. Could you provide details on how you installed Audio and Ethernet? Are you using dual boot or just OSX86? Also is sleep working? Thanks. 8710w sure is an amazing laptop. I'm currently scouting for FX 3600m to install on my system. Chris_G.
heres some tips based on what i've done so far on my 8710w... if using iatkos v5i then you can just select the nvkush option and that seems to work fine for the time being at least for the 1600m although it shows 256mb instead of 512mb. if you have a problem after the install where your system can't find a keyboard or mouse or both then reinstall iatkos with the ps/2 drivers. if you've got the integrated soundmax audio then use the attatched kext. if you've got intel 82566mm ethernet then use the other attatched kext. the 82566mm.rar file also has kext helper in the rar. use kexthelper to install the 82566mm.kext personally i am still suffering from long boot times and haven't figured it out yet. if anyone has any ideas then leave a reply. thanks and hope my little bit of info helps. i might be able to help with other small problems as well. intel82566.rar AppleAzaliaAudioADI1981.rar Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/152403-success-hp-8710w-one-last-issue/#findComment-1098601 Share on other sites

I then had to go and edit the kext, and replace something with 0. Trying to remember what it was. I'm checking now. Oh, btw, does anybody's headphone jack work? Ludens
How to install Mac OS X 10.5.8 Leopard and 10.6.3 Snow Leopard on hp 8710w (maybe useful for 8510p, 8510w, 8710p, 8530p, 8530w, 8730p, 8730w ...) This is my story, how I have migrated from Windows to Snow Leopard. Thanks to all people, how share their knowledge and work. Mac OS X 10.5.8 Leopard If you want dual boot with Windows, then install Mac OS X to second partition. Chameleon bootloader will see and boot both Windows and Mac OS X. You can reduce Windows parititon using Acronys Disk Director. There was 110GB Windows partition at my HDD and I have reduced it to 75GB, so I had 35GB for Leo. Format new partition in Windows as FAT32 with no drive letter. Use iATKOS v7 10.5.7 DVD to boot and install. It then upgrades to 10.5.8 via Apple Software Update afterwards. Boot from DVD takes 10-15 min, just wait. Erase new FAT32 partition as HFS+, label it "Leopard". If you dont need Windows, reformat all disk as GPT (GUID Partition Table), with one partition (HFS+) If you want to try Snow Leo later, create three partitions (HFS+) for Snow Leopard for Leopard for Snow Leo Install DVD, 8GB (not needed if you have external USB drive) Leave the installation with all the default options, with the addition of the following options: Kernel - Voodoo 9.7.0 X86 Patches - OHR Drivers - VGA - nVidia - Enablers - NVEnabler (ONLY!) System - SATA/IDE - AHCI System - SATA/IDE - Generic IDE System - SATA/IDE - Intel SATA/IDE System - Intel SpeedStep (All options) System - USB Sound - Voodoo HDA System - Laptop Battery PS/2 Mouse / Keyboard - Apple PS/2 Network - Wired - Intel - Intel Gigabit Network - Wireless - Broadcom BCM43xx (For Bluetooth) After the initial installation, remove the DVD from the drive and reboot the system. System boot takes 10-15 min, just wait. (Optional) If initial registration can't be finished and repeats at every reboot, try this: From the Chameleon Boot-loader, press any key to enter boot options (shows a "boot-" in the lower left of your screen) and type -s to boot to a shell. Once you get a prompt come back, type the following: fsck -fy mount -uw / touch /var/db/.AppleSetupDone followed by reboot Download HexHex_HP_8510w_10.5.6_Driver_Installer_v1.1.mpkg Run and install *ONLY* the Ricoh Cardbus kext. This will fix long boot problem. Reboot. Run Software Update and install all updates including 10.5.8 Or you can download and install 10.5.8 Update Combo Combo update is preferred, because it will fix issues with X11, if you use it Reboot from iAtkos_v7 DVD. Repeat install with same options, but deselect following: Main system Kernel 9.7.0 Voodoo Your languages Post-install Remove the DVD from the drive and boot into the Mac OS X. Repeat HexHex's Ricoh Cardbus kext installation. Download Voodoo kernel 9.8.0 AnV-XNU-980-V1.7.zip Replace kernel using manual Voodoo Kernel User Documentation sudo -s mv /legacy /legacy.970 cd Downloads unzip AnV-XNU-980-V1.7.zip cd voodoobuild-0.3.6 cp mach_kernel /legacy chflags hidden legacy reboot Do not forget to repair permissions using Disk Utility. Now you have Mac OS X 10.5.8 with Voodoo kernel 9.8.0. You can apply any Apple updates. What is working: Laptop keyboard, trackpad and blue touch button Full screen graphics, accelerated 1920 x 1200 x millions. Ethernet Bluetooth (including Dialup networking with my Nokia GPRS) Firewire Sound USB Volume controls Full Power-down and Restart What's NOT working? Wifi (use Belkin USB Dongle, which works just great) Mac OS X 10.6.3 Snow Leopard After you has been excited by Leopard, now you will want to delete Windows and try Snow Leo Download or buy Mac OS X 10.6.3 Retail DVD On your HP notebook there is a HP_RECOVERY partition, 8GB in size. It used to restore factory pre-installed Windows. I used it for Install DVD image. You may use external USB drive (8GB required). Create DMG-image from that HP_RECOVERY partition and backup it. Erase HP_RECOVERY partition with Disk Utility, filesystem HFS+, label it "Mac OS X Install DVD" Run Disk Utility and restore Snow Leo DVD to that parition If you have not deleted Windows during installation of iAtkos, your disk layout is MBR.Snow Leo requires GPT (GUID). So we have to patch Snow Leo DVD, in order to install it to MBR. Download OSInstall_1063_10D575_deviato.zip sudo -s cd Downloads unzip OSInstall_1063_10D575_deviato.zip cp OSInstall /Volumes/Mac\ OS\ X\ Install\ DVD/System/Library/PrivateFrameworks/Install.framework/Frameworks/OSInstall.framework/Versions/A/ cp OSInstall.mpkg /Volumes/Mac\ OS\ X\ Install\ DVD/System/Installation/Packages Erase Windows partition with Disk Utility, filesystem HFS+, label it "Snow Leopard" Download Empire EFI 1.085 Burn iso (non-legacy) to CD with lowest speed and boot from it. Select disk(partition) "Mac OS X Install DVD" Install Mac OS X on partition "Snow Leopard" Reboot Boot from Empire EFI again Select disk(partition) "Snow Leopard" has been installed Don't use myHack from EmpireEFI CD. Download new version myHack 1.0.1 Run myHack_Installer_1.0.1.mpkg, select "Snow Leopard" volume, choose following options *ONLY*: core Graphics Enabler FakeSMC IOATAFamily NullCPUPowerManagement Uncheck other options, then install Reboot Eject Empire EFI In the the Chameleon bootloader select disk "Snow Leopard" Systems boots without EmpireEFI now, but keyboard doesn't work. Use USB-keyboard to install VoodooPS2Controller 0.98 Reboot Download and install kexts - Intel82566MM (works in 32 and 64 bit modes) - VoodooHDA 0.2.61 - OpenHaltRestart 1.0.3 - SleepEnabler for 10.6.3 - VoodooBattery 1.3.3 - VoodooPowerMini 1.2.7 System is working now, but there is a problem with a stuttering audio. Problem is in incorrect FSB speed detection by vanilla kernel. Download 10.3.0 Legacy Kernel for INTEL/AMD by qoopz/nawcom run kernel installer legacy_kernel-10.3.0.pkg reboot Now you have Mac OS X 10.6.3 with Voodoo kernel 10.3.0. You can apply any Apple updates. What is working: Laptop keyboard, trackpad and blue touch button Full screen graphics, accelerated 1920 x 1200 x millions. Ethernet Bluetooth (only file exchange with my Nokia GPRS) Sound USB Volume controls Full Power-down and Restart What's NOT working? Bluetooth Dial-Up Networking using my Nokia GPRS Wifi (use Belkin USB Dongle, which works just great) Firewire Wake from hibernate Notes 1) Be sure that "Use secure virtual memory" is enabled. (System preferences - Security) Otherwise you may stuck with message "Wake Kernel!" on wake after sleep. Workaround is to delete /Volumes/Snow\ Leopard/var/vm/sleepimage from Leopard. 2) SMB connection to Samba/Windows file sharings is broken in 10.6.3. smb://hostname/share There are errors in console: com.apple.launchd[1] (com.apple.smbfs_load_kext[128]) posix_spawn("/System/Library/Extensions/smbfs.kext/Contents/Resources/load_smbfs", ...): Permission denied Solution: sudo -s cd /System/Library/Extensions/smbfs.kext/Contents/Resources chmod a+x load_smbfs 2 moderators: it may be useful to copy this post to OSx86 10.6 Snow Leopard sub-forum. casty
Hello Ludens, I actually own a 8710w and I'm now deciding whether to buy a Macbook Pro or a PC (maybe a 8740w or a desktop with a GTX 480) to mainly use OSX. I just found your tutorial and maybe this is an off-topic but I would like to ask you some questions: How long did that take to you? Do you think that one can completely replace a Macbook with that installation? Has the FX 1600M similar performance than in Windows, does it support OpenCL? Thanks a lot!
