It seems that the best "news and rumors" these days have been the those regarding next generation video cards.

But seriously, what could possibly top the fantastic news that a certain GPU requres more than 300W of power to work? How about another certain GPU that'll have more than 500 million transistors? Oh well, guess nobody cares since we have 'em 1 kw power supplies floating around anyway.

Enjoy the good news. And the electric bill.

InsanelyMac member PZR was the first to clue us in to the fact that the 10.4.8 update seems to have changed the default display colors on an unknown number of Macs... a fact confirmed by many others at Apple's forums. At this point, it's unclear what models it affects, but it seems to change settings on most or all notebooks. The new hue is a cooler blue, but don't chuck it in the loo while you eschew. (I know, I know - but the Brits came up with "loo" just for a rhyming sentence like that one...)

One user took this picture to illustrate the difference:

Apple has yet to give any kind of explanation, but I'm not holding my breath. For those wanting to revert to the older default settings, you can download the 10.4.7 Colorsync profile here.

    Anyone else experience this?

If you’ve ever wished to have as many video formats supported in Quicktime as VLC or Mplayer, then Perian’s Swiss Army Knife should get the job done… One alternative to Apple’s Aperture may be Adobe’s Lightroom. It’s currently in beta but a free download is available… Here’s a neat guide giving you a good list of ways to customize your Mac along with many plugins… We all know that it takes lots and lots of planning for Steve’s Keynotes, but here’s an interesting read on what all goes on before the big presentation… Another little piece of history of which most of us aren’t aware is the origin of the Mac startup sound (Listen). If you weren’t aware that the sound was created by the same man who worked on certain Jurassic Park sounds, you may be interested in this article.

If you’re still looking for that perfect iTunes skin, then take a look at Takuro’s own custom skin…One blog that seems to have quite a bit of interesting content is sanwer’s SWITCH! blog. It’s full of stuff that all Mac users may find interesting… And finally, here’s one more video compilation of the humor behind Steve and his Keynotes. “

NVIDIA's upcoming GPU, the G80, has just been snapped by a few hacks at PCOnline. Consuming over 300W and requiring dual PCIe power plugs and water cooling, you can bet that this will be a "hot" product. Feast your eyes, pictures are worth a thousand words.

UPDATE: The NVIDIA press launch event for G80 will occur on October 18 in Santa Clara, CA. Be advised, this is a PAPER LAUNCH ONLY, so I suggest you take the time between the press launch and hard launch to get a 1 kw PSU.

Just a few hours ago, CodeWeavers, the geniuses behind CrossOver, released a new beta of CrossOver for Mac. The new beta includes quite a few fixes and improvements from the previous version.

For Mac users, this release includes fixes to Internet Explorer, fixes for many cases where programs would crash when run (e.g. Microsoft Office 2000 and similar older applications), fixes for Outlook 2003, and a range of other improvements.
The complete changelog is attached below. It looks like the future is bright for CrossOver...

    Apple Previews New .Mac Webmail

    By suleiman, in OSx86,

As a webmaster of several websites I have numerous e-mail accounts that I check with fluid ease in Apple's Mail.app. Rarely does a moment present itself when I am without my MacBook Pro, and consequently without access to my mail. But every now and again I have found myself sequestered in an Airport or Hotel lobby that just hasn't plunged into WiFi-coolness. On those rare occassions I'm resigned to beat myself up to using clunky webmail solutions like Microsoft's Hotmail and yes, even Apple's inelegant .mac interface.

Now all that is about to change. With the new update to .mac webmail Apple turned its webmail interface upside down, jostled it around, whipped it about, and ended up with a surprisingly elegant solution that bears a more than uncanny resemblance to the mail application I already use and love.

    Any takers?
