Starting off this weekend's links is another great little widget: Sophiestication’s iTunes Artwork 1.4 widget displays the artwork for the song playing and allows full iTunes control... If you feel the need for a screen saver on your 5G iPod, check out TUAW’s short guide to making your own... If you’re not afraid to edit a few .kext files on your MacBook Pro to reduce temperatures by 5-10c, spend a few minutes looking at Rokem’s guide... A current Apple employee has begun anonymously blogging while “under a mask” and is about to "join the conversation"... As a result of the release of the Red Nano, the Fifth Avenue Store has decided to make a couple of their own changes as well...

In our Design forum, a hot topic as of late has been one discussing annoying design trends on the web - be sure to let your voice be heard... Another interesting thread is based on a Wired article from the 90's entitled 101 Ways to Save Apple, and when looking at all 101 suggestions, you might be amazed at how many were used... A new 10.4.8 OSx86 release is apparently working on AMD machines... And finally, if you were ever suspicious that your Computer Science 101 prof was strung out on a little more than Java (tee hee), check out this video to confirm your worst fears.

According to AppleInsider, Transmeta have filed a lawsuit against Intel, which could threaten the supply of processors for Macintosh products.

The lawsuit reportedly regards no less than 10 violations of Transmeta's patents covering processor design and power efficiency technologies.

Transmeta are seeking damages, royalty payments, and an injunction preventing Intel from selling infringing processors such as both the Core and Core 2 processors, as found in Apple's current line of Macs, after the two companies failed to agree to licensing terms, according to Transmeta's President and Chief Executive Officer Arthur Swift. AppleInsider:

Nine of the 10 Transmeta patents invoked in the lawsuit cover basic processor functions like scheduling and addressing instructions on the chip, according to InfoWorld. The tenth patent reportedly relates to Transmeta's LongRun technology, which is used to adjust the voltage of the processor, depending on its workload.

If granted, an injunction could prevent further shipments of Intel's Core 2 Duo to Apple, which would halt the roll-out of Core 2 Duo-based MacBook and MacBook Pro systems due a little later this year. It would also freeze production of Apple's other Intel-based systems.

    Red iPod Nano Released

    By Colonel, in OSx86,

Apple has just released a new Red model of the 4GB iPod Nano. The iPod is identical to all of its other Nano siblings, but it comes in a shiny, bright red... oh yeah, and $10 of every sale is donated to The Global Fund to fight AIDS in Africa. We've been predicting this iPod for a while now and it appears that we were correct. Here's how Apple describes the new iPod.

Sleek, lightweight, and just $199, the 4GB(2) iPod nano (PRODUCT) RED delivers everything you’d expect from the world’s best-selling digital music player. I would buy one. Would you?

LoopRumors has new speculation that Leopard will be fully unveiled and released for purchase at the '07 MacWorld Expo in San Franscisco. With the expo starting on January 8th, this would have Leopard arriving early, almost breaking it's speculative release date of Q1 2007.

They also note that this may be in response to Microsoft's Windows Vista release around the same period. With Vista being criticized as a rush job, would it be wise for Apple to take the same route? Only Jobs knows, and he sure isn't telling.

Parallels Update Release Candidate 2 was announced yesterday and includes a number of bug fixes and improvements, mainly for the 64 bit Mac Pro and iMac models. This release works quite well on my iMac... no complaints based on my limited testing.

Check out all the info at their blog. Let us know your experiences with this new build!

Update: Ok, well it seems a few stray links and a vaguely named page have created some confusion. This page from their blog would seem to indicate that the Parallels team released an official update (which is true). However, that page also links to a page with the old information from the release candidate. Sorry for any confusion. Lord knows I've got plenty of it...

    Hacked: Mac Pro DVD Drive

    By Swad, in OSx86,

My mother always told me that life was about unlocking potential. I suppose that's true... until you brick whatever you're working on.

Hardmac did a little digging inside a Mac Pro to discover that Apple has been shipping a few different Superdrive models that have some hidden talents. TUAW has this non-Hardmac, non-translated-from-French report:

Although some of the new Mac Pro towers ship with the familiar Pioneer DVR-111D optical drive, the majority of the systems contain the apparently non-existent Sony DW-D150A. I say non-existent because the ubergeeks over at HardMac noticed that DW-D150A isn't a recognized Sony model number. After some more thorough research, it came to light that the drives billed as Sony DW-D150A are in actuality NEC 4570 mechanisms. You're probably asking yourself right about now why on earth I'm going on about something as innocuous as differing model numbers, and in most cases, you'd be right to question my sanity. However, in this rare instance, I have reached through the haze of confusion that normally clouds my mind, and at least for now I have a firm grip on the real world. The significance is this:

The NEC 4570 kicks the pants off the Sony DW-D150A in almost all aspects of reading and writing, and has some extra features to boot. You can catch up on all the action (with pics!) at Hardmac. Let us know if you're willing to attempt this!

One widget that may simplify your searching is TyrantBuilt’s iShare, a handy widget that allows you to search up to 17 BitTorrent sites right from your Dashboard... If you’re looking to find a very cheap alternative to the pricey Toast, Disco might suit your needs. Although not yet available, a download will be released shortly... Ever wanted to play Half-Life 2 on your Intel Mac? If you’ve got the latest CrossOver beta then you may want to check out JustinD’s guide... With Windows Vista RC2 being released recently, it’s become apparent that it’s not so compatible with Boot Camp. Read more of TUAW’s findings... If you live nearby an Apple store then you may find having a Concierge button right on your desktop useful.

Another cool Apple case turned into a PC case would be saGAT’s Power Mac G4 Case... If you haven’t been able to snatch any of Colonel’s latest downloads, then you should head on over to the Colonel’s Corner... And finally, take a trip back in Apple's past to the heady days of those "other" Macs with a moving, low-res rendition of "I think we're a clone now."

    Checked out our Leopard forum?

    By Swad, in OSx86,

Since we were introduced to Leopard a few months ago, we've learned a lot... and it seems we've got a lot more to learn.

In August we opened up a Leopard forum for the discussion of Apple upcoming OS, and it's been our most popular forum ever, hitting the 200 threads mark faster than any other. If you're interested in Safari 3.0, Time Machine, and any of the other new features in Leopard, why not check it out?
