Today Apple released a minor update (7.3.1) for iTunes and a larger update (7.2) for Quicktime.

The update for iTunes addresses a minor problem with iTunes 7.3 accessing the iTunes Library.

The update to QuickTime addresses critical security issues and boasts the ability to use full screen viewing without the need to buy the pro version. It includes updates to the H.264 codec and numerous bug fixes. However if you own a QuickTime Pro key from versions prior to version 7 you will need to purchase a new key from Apple to use with QuickTime 7.2.

Open up the software update program if you have not already been prompted to upgrade or grab the update from Apple's website!

    iPhoneDrive

    By Ed, in OSx86,

Got an iPhone but frustrated at the fact that you can't make the most of the 4GB or 8GB disk space for storing files? Enter iPhoneDrive from Ecamm Network - a $9.95 utility that enables disk-use mode like on current iPods which lets you store any type of file on your iPhone's 4GB or 8GB flash drives.

You do have to use the application's interface, i.e. it's not done natively in Mac OS X, and it requires Mac OS X 10.4.10. And like the iPod's disk-use mode, you can't access the data on your iPhone such as videos, music etc.

Check it out at http://ecamm.com/mac/iphonedrive/ and take advantage of their 7-day trial. Any of you lucky enough to own an iPhone, if you try this please do let me know how you get on with it!

    iPhone Hacked!

    By Sabr, in OSx86,

Yesterday, Jon Lech Johansen (DVD Jon) reported that he successfully activated the iPhone by bypassing iTunes' subscription process, without having to sign on to a two year contract with AT&T. This allows him to use the iPhone in his homeland (Norway), one of many countries where the iPhone is currently unavailable.

Using his method, most of the phones features aren't available, however, using the iPhone as an iPod and WiFi-enabled device is fully functional. Whilst this is one step closer to a completely unlocked iPhone, it still does not have the capability to register itself with other networks (such as T-Mobile or Verizon Centennial Wireless), but where there's a will there's a way.

    Update Roundup!

    By Paranoid Marvin, in OSx86,

Apple has released a number up updates over the last week or so, so here they all are:

    Audio Update 2007-001

The Audio Update 2007-001 addresses an issue with version 1.0 of the Mac OS X 10.4.10 Update in which a "popping" sound might be heard with some external speakers on Intel-based Macs. This update is recommended for all Intel-based Macs running Mac OS X 10.4.10.
Warning! This may mess up your audio on a Hackintosh.

    Mac OS X 10.4.10 Update v1.1

    The update provides:

    - RAW camera support
    - Mounting and unmounting external USB devices
    - Support for 3rd party software applications
    - Security updates

It seems that it updates it to the (rather odd) build number 8R2232 from 8R218. This update is for Intel Macs only. If you still haven't upgraded from 10.4.9, Software Update will get the v1.1 for you, rather than the original 10.4.9.
The v1.1 update includes the Audio Update 2007-001 update.

Also this week, we have seen iTunes 7.3 for both Mac and Windows.

New features in this version include:
    - Activate your iPhone service
-Sync iPhone with your music, movies, TV shows, and more
    - Wirelessly share digital photos from any computer in your home with Apple TV

Note: 10.4.10 is required to use the iPhone.

After weeks of wondering "Did the Leopard dev team take a month off?" Apple has finally seeded the WWDC07 build of Leopard (Build 9A466) to developers via the Apple Developer Connection web site. This build is the same as the build on the DVDs that Apple distributed at WWDC07. As Apple has previously stated, the build is "feature complete" with all of the new bells and whistles, such as the new Finder, Quicklook, Spaces, and more.

The final build of Leopard will "hopefully" be released in October and the build is available to select and premier members only and is available now.

Two days ago, Apple released the long anticipated iPhone along with iTunes 7.3. The iPhone was originally announced back in January at MacWorld 2007 and since then, Apple has been brewing hype and excitement about the phone. People had been waiting in lines for almost a week just to get their hands on one of these beauties. I sure hope the iPhone lives up to its expectations.

iTunes 7.3 was also released simultaneously with the iPhone. The iTunes update includes iPhone compatibility as well as several bug fixes and repairs the blurry scroll bars that would appear on MacBooks and Mac-minis when using the CoverFlow view. The update is available through software update as well as from Apple's iTunes download page.

Also, I apologize for the news being old and kinda stale... *pokes the News Team*

    InsanelyHacked!

    By ColdFusion, in OSx86,

So it appears someone with nothing better to do took it upon themselves to bring down the site for no good reason. They used an Invision PowerBoard exploit which allowed them to gain root access to the database, and after backing it up for their own gratification and future exploitation, they deleted it. I guess this is some people's idea of fun, but the simple fact is: it's a serious crime. So serious in fact, that the investigation has been passed to the UK's Serious Organised Crime Agency (SOCA), and we have been able to provide them with a number of leads thanks to some sterling work from our excellent mods!

We'd like to take this opportunity to appologise for the fact that your email addresses have been compromised and may be passed/sold on to third parties who may like to inform you from time to time that is indeed possible to double the size of your genitalia and perform like a god or goddess in the bedroom. This is extremely unfortunate, but we can assure you that your passwords are safely encrypted on our server so we should be free of account abuse. However, if your password is not particularly strong, we recommend you change it to something stronger ASAP. This is because commonly used passwords could be compared against a list of their encrypted versions, so passwords such "hello" are really not a wise choice. We recommend that your password be at least 8 characters long and contain a mixture of letters and numbers.

When we purchased InsanelyMac we wrongly assumed that it was set up securely, and since the hosting equipment was part of the purchase, we saw no immediate reason to move the hosting away from ThePlanet. Obviously this incident has forced us to look carefully at the security arrangements, and as a result we have migrated the site over to our own servers, patched the forum to the latest version and added another layer of authentication where required. We have also revised our back-up strategy so that any future incidents can be recovered from more quickly. So despite being blackmailed by those claiming to be responsible for the attack, we are pleased to announce the return of InsanelyMac, now more secure than ever.

The iPhone is almost here! It is released across the US at 6pm on the 29th of June. It will be available simultaneously at Apple retail stores, AT&T retail stores as well as Apple's online store. Apple says the (rather odd) 6pm launch is so that everyone gets a good chance to get their iPhone. Of course, it would be a good idea to turn up early. But just how early? This week's MacPoll wants to find out.

Can't afford an iPhone yet, or just live outside of the US? Well, Apple has provided some new material to keep your dreams up. A new guided tour of the iPhone takes you through all the features. Apple has also provided a short guide to aid your first days on the iPhone, by explaining how to transfer your contacts and photos etc.

Is the iPhone not enough for you? Or perhaps you just need to compensate for something . Either way, these giant display models of the iPhone are bound to draw some attention as you walk down the street.

Although the iPhone's data plan seems to be unspecified at the moment, don't let that give you reason to cancel your contract too soon, as it may cost you $175!.

I guess there's not much left to do now but sit outside an Apple store and wait! (I'm the guy in the blue jacket with the Powerbook at the Cupertino store! )
