Win Mashugly's iPod

20,000 members. That’s incredible! I had no idea when we started this site back in July that it would grow so large – thanks to you it’s become one of the best Mac forums online in just a few months time.

To celebrate our 20,000th member, I’m giving away my iPod. There’s no gimmick, we’re not doing it to be cool or trendy – I just have a pristine 40 gig Click Wheel iPod (along with cables and cases) that I want to give to a member of our forum . You may be saying, “Why would I want a 4G when the 5G iPods are so much better?” Well, the main reason this one is better because it’s free. The second reason is that it comes fully stocked with 40 gig of my favorite music, ranging from The Beatles to Beethoven to… well… just about everything. Since the giving away of digital music is still a legal grey area (the courts haven't figured it out yet), just be sure to delete all the music when you get the iPod. Mkay? Mkay.

Anyway, getting this iPod couldn’t be any simpler. Here’s how:

1. Post on the forum. The winner must have at least 231 posts by the contest’s end on March 1. The site staff will be making sure that your posts are substantial, helpful, and kind.

2. Post in the new forums. That means that helpful guides in the Genius Bar and threads in “Reviews” will score you more (imaginary) points.

3. Nominations. Who you think should win? Every forum member can send one nomination to ipod@osx86project.org with the subject of “iPod Nomination”. And yes, you can nominate yourself. :)

Pretty easy, huh? On March 1, the site staff will compile all that data and decide who should win. The contest starts today and it’s a blank slate – someone with 500 posts right now isn’t any better off than the person who only has 3.

I hope this will be a fun contest – we’re doing it because we like to do crazy things and this is a good way to reward you for helping us make The OSx86 Project the excellent community it has become.

I found it! 231 backwards is 132, which is quintal for 42 in the decimal number system! Behold my mathematical skills! :graduated:

Also, 231 in quintal is equal to 42 in hexadecimal! Oh, Mash and your number systems! :hysterical:

Holy Jesus, thats prophetic :pope: . Cause we all know 42 is "The Answer to Life, the Universe, and Everything".

Now everything makes sense, Apple, Maxxus, OSX86!

Well, you're right Eggman. You found me out. And 42 is one less than half of... 86!!!

Oh my god, this means 42(The Answer of Life)+"The One"(Maxxus) x 2(2 DTK Versions) = 86 (Our beloved Hackintosh)

It finaly all make sense :graduated:

This is very kind of you to give away your iPod.

Congradulations to the winner.

I'm not going to enter this because I don't know much about Mac OS x86 so I don't have very many things to post about, maybe next time (if there is lol).

Oh, dear ... this appeared today:

Wipe your iPod before selling it, RIAA warns

By Tony Smith 13th February 2006 11:52 GMT

If you sell your iPod and don't remove your music first, you could find

yourself with the Recording Industry Ass. of America (RIAA) breathing

down your back. The organisation last week told sellers in the US that

doing so is a clear violation of copyright law and warned them that it's

sniffing out for infringers.

Apple's rapid iPod refresh schedule, not to mention those of its

competitors, have generated a tide of old music player offers in

classified ads columns and on sites like eBay. Rather too many sellers

are shipping their old machines with music libraries intact - some we've

seen even make a virtue of the fact.

But it's illegal, not only in the US but also in the UK and the rest of

Europe. As, incidentally, is ripping all your CDs and LPs to MP3 then

selling or even giving away the originals. By disposing of your physical

media, you're ending your right to use the music they contain. The

RIAA's point, made in an MTV online report is that handing over music on

a music player is no different from duplicating a CD and selling the

copy.

The only way around the problem is to either erase the iPod, or make

sure it ships with the only copies of the music - downloads if that's how

they were obtained, or the original physical media. And don't keep

copies yourself.

(Article ends.)

Of course, we all take notice of what the RIAA says, don't we?:)

Also, it says 'selling' - nothing about giving away so my (deliberately faulty) interpretation is that Mash is all right..!

I note Mr Smith says "Recording Industry Ass. of America (RIAA)" - very apposite!

Yeah, thanks for that Metrogirl. I've seen a few similar articles floating around which made me perk up due to our contest!

Here's another one, from the investigative reporting firm of record, MTV. I quoteth:

"It really depends on the individual circumstances," he explained. "I'm not sure the law is settled. If I'm a college student and I want to supplement my income by buying 100 iPods and taking my CD collection and putting it on those iPods and selling them at a significant premium, that's probably not going to fly. But if I've had my iPod Shuffle for two years and I'm tired of it and I go out and buy a 60 gig video iPod and want to sell my old Shuffle, but don't want to purge the music first, that's probably legal."

Especially if we're not making any profit from it, I would certainly think it's ok. But as always, I'll entertain any concerns.

Re: Thinking About Selling Your Used Ipod? Not So Fast, Says RIAA

Concerns? RIAA? What are you talking about Mash? I never saw that? Did you?

Mash: "See what"?

Me: Exactly :dev:

That's also why you're supposed to - are you reading this - delete the music when you get it. You heard me. Delete. Au revior. Baleted (in the words of Homestar)! :dev:

I think the law is an ass on this one. A while ago somone broke into my car at the airport and stole my CD changer from the boot (trunk). It contained a dozen original CDs. As it happens I had copies of each of them at home which I'd made - quite legally - so that I wouldn't have to run out to the car if I wanted to listen to something. Assuming I had no insurance to replace those CDs (which I did) would that mean that I no longer had the right to listen to music which I'd honestly bought because I no longer had the original media? BOLLOCKS! (See Google if you don't understand that traditional English expletive.)

Damn,

I saw that you posted Metrogirl, and I thought you had made me a Thong underwear example :D

Although, now that I think about it, where the hell would you find room to put the OSx86 logo on a thong anyway... :dev:

1st choice nomination: Maxxuss

2nd choice nomination: munky

Whaa.....??? Takuro! I'm touched! Thank you, but i'm astounded... there are so many others who have done so much more for the community. My only contributions are (usually stupid) ideas, suggestions and theories on how things might be made to work.

You made my day tho! :hysterical:

For the record, Maxxuss gets my vote too...

EDIT: Hey, I just noticed i'm not too far off of 231 posts either... better get to work in the Genius Bar...

My vote would go to MacGirl, who has not only produced enough posts but has consistently kindly and intelligently guided many poor users through countless hardware troubles. But the staff are excluded, bah!

After thinking about it and hearing from everyone (we're oh-so-flexible around here), I'm thinking that 231 posts is fairly high goal to reach. Even some of our most active members aren't that high yet.

So I propose that we either extend the contest time or lower the count requirement to, oh, I don't know, 86. :P

Does that sound more fair to everyone? We want to make sure that this contest can be won by someone with fair amount of posts. If you've been trying hard to reach the 231 number, don't worry - the more posts, the better!

Yeah... I'd like to know I stand a chance of winning (despite the fact it would be a 1 in 20,000 chance (given the fact that they all had over the required amount of posts too!)). :D

How about, you can only win it if your post count ends in 86... so it could be 486, or 186 :P Thus, the "X" gets to play a part in it too! ;)

I don't think it really matters much either way. It is a nice idea to change the number of posts required, to be more inclusive of everyone. Either way, I'm sure that you (Mash) and the other staff will make a very good choice for the winner. After all, there are so many helpful members of this site, whether they have 86 posts or over 1,000 posts :D I do know that you will have an interesting decision to make, considering all the people who I would immediately think to nominate (and who I have already seen nominated in this thread) are staff, and according to Metrogirl's post, "the staff are excluded, bah!" Whatever happens, the contest seems to have stimulated valuable discussion on the site, and that is great.

Sometimes I wonder if some of my run-on sentences should be training for the 800m relay in the upcoming Summer Olympics 2 years from now. :dev:

Eggman, I'll let you tell me. What's the best method?

(Knowing that if you opt for the "86 number option" in your reply to this post, you'll be at 187... :dev: )

86 sounds like a nice round number...for some reason I think a nice number in the middle might be better, but it's always better to widen the nomination field! But since we are looking at the content of your posts, and your overall attitude on the forum, I think that 86 would probably be fine. You don't necessarilly have to have a lot of posts to contribute to the site! BTW...will we look at any wiki contributions/acitivity too?

I could use an iPod just about now...my Mini died a couple days ago walking home. Perhaps I could resign my staff position, win the iPod, then beg for you to let me back on the team? :dev:
