VMware Fusion for Mac Beta 2 Released

Colonel

Yesterday, VMware released the second beta of VMware Fusion for the Mac. The beta contains some new features such as DirectX 8.1 support and support for 64-bit guest OSes. Some of the existing features have also been improved such as improved snapshot support and an improved hardware editor. VMware provides us with details about the new update.

New and Improved Features in Beta 2

This Beta 2 release of VMware Fusion for Mac includes the following new features and feature improvements:
  • Experimental 3-D graphics support - Play a selection of DirectX 8.1 games in Windows XP Service Pack 2 virtual machines.
  • Snapshot feature - Roll back your virtual machine to a known good state when something goes wrong in your virtual machine - for example, when your virtual machine picks up a virus, or when a software upgrade causes problems.
  • Improved networking - Automatically bridge to the computer's primary network interface.

Full support for Airport wireless networking, including virtual machines behind a NAT firewall and bridged to the local Airport network.

Support for up to ten virtual network interfaces
  • Improved Microsoft Vista support - Support for Microsoft Vista Business, Enterprise, and Ultimate editions.

Complete VMware Tools support for Microsoft Vista including copy/paste, dragging and dropping files, shared folders, and screen resizing.
  • Improved hardware editor - Add additional virtual hard drives to a virtual machine for needed capacity.

View the physical computer's battery status in the virtual machine.
  • Improved full screen mode - Support for plugging and unplugging displays while virtual machines are in full screen mode.

Improved usability: an on-screen tip shows how to enter and exit full screen mode easily.
  • Experimental support for Mac OS X Leopard - You can now install and run VMware Fusion on Mac OS X 10.5 (Leopard). Support is experimental because Mac OS X 10.5 is not yet released. Fusion will support the release version of OS X 10.5 in the final VMware Fusion release.

The VMware beta can be obtained free of charge from VMware Fusion's product page on the VMware website.

Can't get the license key to work....have seen others on this forum who also have had the same problem. The program just says its invalid, and directs me to their website where I downloaded it, and gives me the same serial again...

Installing this software snet my Hackintosh into a tailspin... Crashed it - HARD. Here's how to recover - should anyone else fall down this trap:

Boot into single user mode:

Boot: -s -v

Once in single user mode run /sbin/fsck -y (as directed on the commandline. The run /sbin/mount -uw /

to get everything mounted. At that point navigate to /Applications/VMfusion.app/Resources. Once there you'll see a VMwareuninstall.tool or something like that. Run the tool ./VMuninstall.tool. Once that is done, simply type reboot and you should be back in business.. Whew! I had too much software & serious work on this puppy to re-install the OS...

didnt work for me.

install keeped crashing (but the app was put in place somehow).

serial invalid though copied and pasted right from their webpage.

unlike w. the WinDOS version VMWare Workstation, I cannot use a real HD (i got 2 HDs in my box, 1 for MacOS, 1 for WinDOS).

didnt try virtual HD though.

system didnt seem to make any trouble after de-installing w. their uninstall script

would consider it, if it would support also REAL HDs.

Cheers!

I think it will support real HDs.

yes, they should add this feature.

Did you check VMware forums for a solution of your crashing prob?

Nope. Do they offer support for non-apple Hardware?

Isnt it anyway kinda wired to run Win in an emu on MacOS on a Pentium? :P

Cheers!

AFAIK they don´t ask. and because is Public Beta they have a forum for their betas, but you need to register in order to see that forum.

As weird to run MacOS in an emu on a Pentium.

Friends,

I download it a few of times getting down almost 3 free beta registration codes but anytime I tried to register it, it refused the activation due to wrong serial number ;)

Does anyone know a way to get it at work? I also tried the oi*k's release but it won't register. Where can I get a working serial? I have a legal account for the beta testing...

How did you get it working properly?

thanks :gun:

Im also having the same prob. Running it in 10.4.11 with kernel 8.9.1.

While it's installing it'll stop responding about 98% of the progress bar. So i'll reboot my system and its in the Applications folder even though it didnt finish the installation.

Program opens only problem is it wont accept my serial even tho its from vmware..

Any solutions? =)
