UPDATED: Vista-compatible MacDrive due January '07

Alex Oughton

For many users of Windows XP on the Intel Mac, Mediafour's MacDrive makes all the difference to the experience, providing seamless access to Macintosh-formatted hard disks and removable storage devices.

Unfortunately, the current version of MacDrive is not compatible with Windows Vista, which went to RTM recently, and is due to hit retail in January 2007.

I recently contacted Mediafour regarding availability of a Vista-compatible version, and one of their support representatives had this to say:

¨We understand that customers would like a Vista-compatible version of MacDrive as soon as possible, and we anticipate that we will release Vista-compatible versions of Mediafour software about the time for the consumer retail release of Windows Vista, which is scheduled for January 30, 2007. This is currently planned to be a free update

So, good news for all those planning to upgrade their Boot Camp installations to Windows Vista at launch!

edit: I've just received *another* email from their team, stating that the update will in fact *NOT* be free, but will be part of their next major release, involving a paid upgrade.

While that is somewhat good news, it still show how clueless many companies are about Vista support. Too many software and driver developers are holding off on Vista-compatible releases until January. They should have had these things ready to go at RTM, not 2 months later. Why? Because OEM's are going to start selling computers with Vista BEFORE the retail release. The retail release is only for the "buy it on the shelf" release. Every OEM and anyone with an MSDN account will be installing it in the next few weeks. Developers have had several months where they could have been releasing beta versions of their software for people in the CPP to test, and they have wasted this time. Now people running the final release will have to beta test things for them. :thumbsdown_anim:

I don't disagree with Blue, but I do want to stick up for MediaFour.

First off I would assume they just like everyone else will be getting the RTM over the next few days. I am sure they would like a LITTLE time to beta test it on the final release and make sure nothing new has cropped up. I for one would rather wait an extra month or two to feel confident that when I plug in a Mac drive Vista wont go kaplooyey and corrupt or damage the drive.

Second, THEY ARE GIVING YOU THE UPGRADE FREE! Come on when you have a major new release like this how many companies give the upgrade for free? McAfee? Symantec? Trend Micro? I don't believe ANY of them will be offering free upgrades from their XP products to Vista compatible ones.

Just my :thumbsdown_anim:
