The Official WWDC 2006 Prediction Thread

Swad

Post your predictions for WWDC here. Mine include:

1. Leopard preview.

2. New Mac Pro.

3. Promise of Merom Macbook Pros (and maybe Macbooks) by the end of the month.

4. Introduction of some big universal app - Office, etc.

That's about it - I'm not expecting anything too crazy. How about you?

I'm thinking a CS3 lineup is unlikely, though Office could happen. Part of my concern with that is I want the Office 2007 Mac edition to be comparable in features to the Windows version. That may be a pipedream, but Office 2007 for windows is really a stellar application. I guess I'll keep my fingers crossed!

-Mac pro released

-Intel Xserve released

-Leopard preview and developers preview discs

-Big CS3 and/or Office demo and some words of a representative from Adobe or MS

-Merom MBP announced

-Flashy charts about how this was "the greatest transition everr" nad how great mac sales have been or something on those lines

-flashy charts on how great this new intel CPUs are

Some people believe a 2gen nano is coming, with a full metal jacket and up to 8Gigs; I would love that but WWDC isn't a common place for ipod announcements

i don't want the Office 2007 interface though. I'm too used to the old school Office toolbars, and the new Office interface will just be counterproductive for me.

I wonder about the whole Mac system line getting some sort of updates.

why ?

well why has Apple been doing a rebate on MAC Book Pro's down to Mac Mini for the month of July ?

I am hopeing at least speed bumps for the Mac Mini and Imac's a merom in the imac would be possible maybe ?

FORECAST: Apple will release OS X for generic Intel hardware.

However, to avoid increased expenses, the OS will be offered for a very short list of mobo's and video cards. Then, Apple will let forums, like this one, spend time & effort porting other hardware.

WHY: (1) The marginal cost is near zero (note caveat above; Apple will provide little or no tech support), and marginal gain significant. (2) It is the only strategy that can move Apple's market share.

EVIDENCE: (1) Apple has taken bloggers to court for simply printing rumors of new products -- yet it has not gone after forums promoting hacked copies of its OS. My guess is, Apple knows all the hacked copies will be irrelevant soon. (2) Apple has a list of video cards required for its photo software, Aperture -- and most of the cards are not sold by Apple at all. Why would Apple test video cards it doesn't sell, unless it anticipates that OS X will be running on hardware Apple didn't sell.

COMMENT: All of us here will agree that OS X is a superior OS to Windows. Yet, for decades, Apple has remained only a marginal player in both OS and hardware. The reason is obvious: Apple PCs are too limited in options and much, much too expensive. It is not realistic for Apple to suddenly compete on price & features with hardware vendors like HP or Dell (management skill)........but it is realistic that OS X could take much of Windows market share, and do so very quickly.

Ive said it befor and ill said again:

APPLE WILL NEVER EVER RELEASE OS X ON BEIGE BOX HARDWARE!

yep I agree and frankly I believe that one of apples main reasons that their OS is superior in stability is the total control of hardware and related drivers.. this dell sucks with OSC compared to my old powerbook

Hahahahah, OMG man, you crack me up soooooo much, the chances of Apple releasing OS X for non apple hardware are non-existent, like why the f@$k would they want to do that, who xcares if it would cost nothing, it would cost a lot more in the long run also it is against apple ideology to relase OS X for non-apple machines,

OMG you have some brain problem dont you, well duh it will work on video cards that apple doesnt sell. Apple only sellls the machien, anyway those cards are specific "mac" versions, so thats pretty much a mac card.

BTW waht forums are "promoting" hacked copies of OS X, this one sure as hell aint.

This will come in 2 flavors with Core2Duo (Conroe). 1) 2.16ghz E6400 for Entry-Level lower cost system. 2) 2.66ghz E6700 for Performance version.

Line 2 "The Mac Pro"

This will also come in 2 flavors with Core2Duo Xeon (Woodcrest). 1) 4 processor 2.66ghz 5150, 2) 4 processor 3.0ghz 5160

Dreaming!

Please do not derail this into a thread on OS X on generic hardware...

I just think we'll see MacPros, updated MBP, 10.5 previews, and perhaps a few apps showcased that are now Universal binaries.

The thread is "WWDC 2006 Prediction", and anything that might be announced there is certainly "on topic".

I am personally hoping that Steve will unlease a new iMac design. I am not looking forward to this as it won't happen, but I would like to see a new design. (Not that I don't like the current one.)

I also hope the Mac Pro is unleased, with a new design!

Another small thing I think Steve will say something about is the new store on 5th and its stats/charts.

Last I am very excited about the Leopard preview and seeing the charts on the transition. I really want to see what the Leopard logo is.

The one thing I am very excited about seeing is Steve comparing Vista to Leopard in any way.

Screenies? bleh, screenshots are nothing to get excited over. A Stevenote demo, that's more exciting. Even more exciting: a developers copy (which will surely leak on the net). As far as Office, Microsoft has stated that they will not update Office 2004 and will release a fully Intel compatible version when the next major release comes

I'm suprised nobody has mentioned cinema displays. Given even the macbook is shipping with built in isight, anyone willing to fork out for a high end mac pro is going to expect the same functionality so i would hope apple will update the lineup with cinema displays that include built in isights. Such an update would also (hopefully) include hdmi+hdcp support and (maybe) glossy screen options?

My comment stands. Aside from the fact that it won't be announced. ;) I just don't want this thread to devolve into the usual flamewar on the topic, which is what could happen, ok. :)

I do hope for some Cinema Display updates. Their 20" and 23" ones especially are using old LG panels, so I hope they announce ones using updated panels.
