Showtime.

Swad

We're getting more details today about Apple's media event scheduled for next week. iLounge, who got an invite, has the scoop:

Apple today confirmed that it will hold a special event on Tuesday, September 12th at the Yerba Buena Center for the Arts Theater in San Francisco, California. An invitation sent to select media, including iLounge, features Hollywood premiere-style spotlights and reads simply, “It’s Showtime.” The event will kick off at 10:00 a.m. PT.

Reports of a September 12th press event first surfaced last week after the hosts of the Your Mac Life radio show and European Apple enthusiast websites claimed to have knowledge of the event. Apple’s date choice appears to be intentional, as the event will overlap with the opening day of this year’s Apple Expo in Paris, France, an international Mac and iPod show the company declined to grace with a keynote.

I assume that the "Showtime" reference isn't just a reference to the HBO competitor. What are your predictions?

It could quite possibly be a iTunes Movie Store and a iPod featuring Wide screen support. We don't need anymore reassuring about the movie store, but a new iPod will probably not happen.

Honestly, you never know. I have a feeling that Apple wouldn't have gone with such an extravagant theme unless they had a bit more planned for their media-centric lineup than just the immenent unveiling of the movie store...say, perhaps, that ever elusive iPhone? And maybe even those updated MacBook and iMac models we've been hearing so much about on the rumour mills.

That's a pretty clever ad. I suppose they are "raising the curtains" on their plans for an online movie store.

As this even comes closer and closer, I keep thinking to myself, "Is iTunes going to be called 'iTunes' for much longer?" Obviously it's evolved to be much more than just an online music store. "iPod Media Store" is a pretty long name. I wouldn't know what the could possibly call it.

Unfortunately, I don't think the IPhone will come yet...:guitar:

For sure we know about the movies... and a brand new 23" iMac to see movies (23" .... movies). And maybe a new Airport Express with movie streaming (in care u like ur tv and dont wanna get the 23" ...). They are all linked ... the movie store, 23" imac and (maybe) new airport express.

But I don;t see how a phone can enter this  next event maybe.

Also, maybe quiet iPod updates...

I wonder if we'll even see it here in the UK i thought with it being held in Paris it might be a Europe wide thing too but then the invites are going out to SF?

They don't sell TV Programs over here.

All we have are the Pixar videos & a few music videos.

Which is why i have Every episode of family guy on my iPod. :)

Hey, thats true. In France's store they don't sell tv shows either. And if they eventually do it someday, it's going to be dubbed, which sucks. We pay 99 euro cents for each song, so we pay more than the american/canadian stores. And we don't get the free song of the week or whatever. So, I dont buy anything from the iTunes store. I prefer to give my money to the russian mp3 store.

It could be a number of things, but personally I'd lean towards the Movie Store idea again. iPhone, which we all know is probably going to happen at some point, is most likely still a ways off, but doing movies for iPods and iTunes has been a capability for a long time now.

We'll see what happens... :)

Just thought of something as I hit Post... wouldn't it be something if Apple released a Mac designed to be a Media Center "Mac"? With a TV/radio tuner? DVR capabilities... Hmmm... just flying off on a tangent here, but I wonder...

I was actually thinking of something similar... And why not using FrontRow as an interface and the possibility to download directly from ITMS, Europe inclusive... :hysterical:

Exactly. It's not like they can't make it happen, really. Besides, it's a logical progression for iTunes in general, or at least the idea of iTunes. Should be pretty cool if that's what they announce and, well, I was going to say if they could pull it off nicely but we're talking about Apple. Much as I might dislike a lot of their stuff (guess I just "Think Different" on entirely different levels), they do design some beautiful hardware.

So it's looking like iTunes Movie Store, and some updated nanos and maybe a high capacity iPod. Wouldn't count on the iPhone or Widescreen iPod just yet. Perhaps an updated front row - that was something that wasn't demonstrated in leopard...

Considering that the 24" iMacs were realeased without a fanfare - it would lead me to believe that this is a pretty big announcement and possibly one that not many have thought of - I think the media centre mac is a REALLY clever deduction br0adband.

Movie store is certain - hopefully more international itunes content.

iPhone - God at EVERY announcement there are the few :P at a developers conference (who releases a phone at a developers conference) and now at a clearly movie themed announcement. Although - that could be what they want us to think :D

I reckon they might release the new iPod but thats probably just wishful thinking.

I don't want to get my hopes up though - remember all the hype leading up to the announcement of the iPod HiFi?!

The more I think about it, now would be a great time to do the Movie Store with iTunes. I'm still wondering about the Mac HTPC idea, it's always a possibility for them to go all out and do it right (not like it hasn't been done right but that's another thread altogether), so I'm leaning towards the Movie Store or selling movies, whatever they want to call it.

It would have to work through iTunes since that's their frontend for selling media to customers online. Whatever they announce it'll stand out as always.

Absolutely. The release of the iMac makes me think that while preparing the keynote, they realised that whatever theyre releasing is so big, they wouldn't have time to cover the iMac/mac mini.

I do have really high hopes for this event. I know we work ourselves up alot, so all I'll expect is the movie store and the nano (which is more than welcome, as I need a new nano desperately,) but somethig keeps telling me there's gonna be more...

Ok, so I chopped that tidbit out, but I got a laugh when I read it because I've got this book laying beside the laptop right now called "The Cult of Mac" I got at the library on Friday. It's got tons of gorgeous photography, lots of interesting people, and tons and tons of comments just like that one above.

I'm not a member yet, but I'm definitely learning more about it every day. Now if I can just "find" a MacBook Pro left on a bus or someplace, I'll be fully assimilated. ;)

Well, sad to say OSX "ain't all that" and Macs never have been, but I can stand to learn new things since I plan to support the Intel Macs in my consulting work. There are just too many annoyances with OSX for me that simply, well... they're annoying, 'nuff said. It'll never be my desktop OS of choice but it does have some saving graces for me...
