Red iPod Nano Released

Colonel

Apple has just released a new Red model of the 4GB iPod Nano. The iPod is identical to all of its other Nano siblings, but it comes in a shiny, bright red... oh yeah, and $10 of every sale is donated to The Global Fund to fight AIDS in Africa. We've been predicting this iPod for a while now and it appears that we were correct. Here's how Apple describes the new iPod.

Sleek, lightweight, and just $199, the 4GB(2) iPod nano (PRODUCT) RED delivers everything you’d expect from the world’s best-selling digital music player.

I would buy one. Would you?

I would definitely buy one for my mom. I'm very impressed with Bono's idea of mixing philanthropy and commerce. Apparently it only costs 50 cents a day to keep someone supplied with AIDS drugs so 10 dollars will buy 20 days of life. Can't argue with that.

heres an idea for apple.

send 10 dollars to the AIDS fight in africa with EVERY iPod sold, not just the damn red ones.

or better yet, contribute 10 dollars to various funds that can use them by making each colour represent a different charity that the money will be donated to.

I loved this idea but then realised the problems it would case for Apple. Although different nanos supporting different charities will increase the amount given to charities overall, the colours will be connected to the related charity.

This can cause problems for buyers. I might want to go and buy a blue ipod but not really feel totally satisfied by money is going to a Pets Home charity. And because my colour is linked to this charity alone it will be clear to everyone also that this is the charity I choose to support. Given the number of people around the world dyeing and suffering I would probably wish the money had gone to help people instead (although animals are important too). Also a young lady might want to buy a silver, but that might be connected to a charity helping Testicular Cancer patients. Now although this is still a great charity to support she may be uncomfortable because it’s to do with that issue or because she would rather her money went to breast cancer.

Get the point?

Maybe keep the colour and choose any charity but to indicate what charity you chose you get a different start up logo on your nano. Or even a free cover with that charities logo. You know what i mean.

[PS: I have to say giving $10 from the sale of a nano is brilliant work. But taking no extra for it (still costing you $199 for 4GB) is even better and makes apple look great.]

The obvious choice for the pink nano would be the Breast Cancer Research Foundation. Target had a special this last week where they would donate ALL PROFITS from the sales of pink Nintendo DS systems to the foundation. Would be nice to see Apple do the same with the pink nano. It is interesting that the pink nano is the only one that the Target store I work for is sold out of right now.

u might as well just donate ur own money to africa (a much better idea)

and its unlikely apple can afford to send ten dollars from evry ipod to charity

btw: i dont like that red, id rather get the silver or black, or maybe white or green

You're kidding, right? Do you know how much profit they make off of the iPods? $10 per iPod wouldn't really hurt them at all. Next to Microsoft, Apple is probably one of the most profitable companies in the computer industry.
