Macworld 2007: Roundup

sHARD>>

Here's what we've learned:

iTV

The iTV has now dropped its codename and is officially known as AppleTV. It sports a 40GB hard drive, 720p HD output, 802.11b/g/n wireless, connects to the iTunes store, can stream content from up to 5 computers, and sync content with another computer. It costs $299, can be preordered today, and will ship in February.

iPhone & iPod

Next up is the famed iPhone. This was coyly introduced as an iPod, iPhone, and "Internet Communicator"... all in one! Big widescreen, fully touch sensitive, multitouch, gestures, runs a version of OS X. It docks and syncs with iTunes, and can play movies, music, podcasts, TV shows, photos, contacts, and e-mail. It has a 3.5" high res screen, with 160 pixels per inch and is 11/16" thick, though it is a bit taller and wider than a standard cell phone. The screen is very impressive, though the interface looks vaguely Zune-like, in it's focus on a colorful wallpaper. It houses 4GB or 8GB of onboard flash memory. A nice 2 Megapixel camera is housed on the back of it, a standard iPod connector at the bottom, and an ambient light sensor to adjust brightness. The built-in speaker appears to function with music, not just the phone system. It also houses an acceleromoter to automatically turn on the display, and orientation detection to adjust the screen to portrait or landscape.

It appears that Cingular is the only carrier to have the iPhone, and as it is GSM, it also takes SIM cards. It also takes advantage of the faster EDGE network, giving mobile broadband. Connectivity also includes WiFi and Bluetooth, allowing it to connect to home networks and pair with other devices. The onstage demos showed the device flying, looking very much like a full-scale laptop with its Core animation support. Yes, that means it supports Coverflow. Overall the interface is designed with the typical Apple ethos - everything is simple and attractive.

"Visual" voicemail which let's you select which voicemails you wish to listen to, quick buttons to conference call, mute, speakerphone, etc. Along with standard SMS features (iChat style), the phone also supports e-mail, enhanced with a new form of predictive input. A minimalist version of Safari is used for web browsing, using the power of the WebKit engine for everything from Google Maps to Widgets (both demoed). Yes, it even has tabs. In order to offer cheaper and more reliable internet access, it automatically switches between the EDGE and WiFi connections. Free e-mail with Yahoo! uses a system similar to that on Blackberries (push IMAP). Back to Google Maps for a second - finally, a phone which uses the GPS features... it knows where you are.

The interface is, in general, very OS X like. With the added joys of multitouch, photos can be resized with two fingers, web pages can zoom in and out, and more. And don't forget multi-tasking. Browse the web while making a call, shoot off some e-mails. Music auto-pauses when a call comes in much like the older iTunes software for phones. With all these features, battery life sits at a respectable 5 hours talk time, 16 with audio only.

Google & Yahoo

What the heck? I remarked to fellow InsanelyMac user other that it would be fairly amusing if Google bought Apple... moments before Eric Schmidt walks on stage and they start talking about doing a "merge without merging". What's that translate to? It seems it's a "strong partnership". But then again, they've also announced heavy Yahoo integration with the iPhone.

Apple Computer

Is no more. Now it's just Apple, Inc.

Airport Extreme

Here's a little gem that managed to escape the keynote: the AirPort Extreme Base Station has launched and can be found at the Apple Store. It sports 802.11a/b/g/n, 3 LAN ports, a USB port for a printer or hard drive, and a new design resembling the Mac mini or Apple TV.

Commentary

Wow, so the iPhone is really here. It's... amazing, though a bit pricey. But with those features, it's hard to complain.

I'd like to chime in with my disappointment as well and second that fact that a name change could signify a real change in company vision that leads away from the less profitable computer market and into the more profitable consumer electronics market. You would think with a new OS release just a few months away, there would have at least been a quick mention about it.

As far as the iPhone, I'm extremely intrigued by it, but in the end it's still a very expensive, Cingular-only phone. I knew with Verizon's CDMA network that Apple would never partner with them, but Cingular has to be the worst network out there (I've had Cingular, Sprint, and finally Verizon). Even if I haven't had Cingular in a while, all of my friends who do have their service agree that it really sucks for people in Upstate New York.

If you ask me, this whole thing seems like an attempt to grab as much market share as possible from a very active market. Steve said it himself, 1% of the mobile device market is 10 million units, a lot of revenue for Apple.

also, will there be just a regular ipod version of this with maybe more storage? i have to say, my phone is still able to make and receive phone calls.... a phone i happily got for free with a one year contract.

and as a long time cingular/at&t user, i have to say their service does suck hah

If I had a pound for every time someone posted the word 'disappointed' after a keynote, i'd have paid off my mortgage by now.

However, I will agree its bizarre to have no mention of Leopard at all. My guess is a 'Special Event' soon.

Cingular is unheard of in Canada. Are we going to be able to buy an "unlocked" version of this phone from Apple Store? How much more would it cost?

I wonder what kind of HW is inside that TV box...

people call the iPhone expensive...but think of it this way...most smartphones cost $300 ~$400+ they're chunky, ugly, have small screen, bad interface etc etc. Apple basically replaced anything you need to place in your pocket (iPod, PDA, phone, blackberry, portable web browser etc etc) with a slick and insanely awesome device with a 2 year contract. It's even got a widescreen for playing videos that people have always wanted. this thing is great.

Color me extremely disapointed too. The iTV....neat but YAWN. The iPhone...very sweet tech, but ridiculously expensive, only Cingular?!?, and only 4 or 8 GB?!? Maybe it'll replace the Razr as the new hotness in phones, but I still won't be getting one.

If they had just released a "Mac Mini Pro" that uses a Conroe and has a 16x PCI-E slot that can take a high end gaming card, I would have whipped out the credit card in a flash. I want me a new Mac that can also double as a PC gaming box SO BAD. I recently got JaS 10.4.8 running on my PC, but it's got several issues that will prevent me from using it regularly.

I just want a lightning fast powerhouse Mac that doesn't cost $ARM + $LEG + $LEFT-NUT.

STEVE!!! ARE YOU LISTENING?!? :censored2:

dude, i totally hear you.

i was so dissappointed with todays keynote. Personally, i think the iTV fills a void for those that don't have an xbox 360 or similar to drive their TV. the iPhone, is absolute genius, but it is way out of my price range, for essentially what is a phone. where is the ledgendary 6G iPod?! as for the "Mac Mini Pro"- thats exactly what i need. i really can't afford/justify a Mac Pro, i dont want an iMac because i already have two 19" widescreen monitors, and the Mac Mini is just too feeble to power them both at their native resolution. plus i have 7.1 speakers. where the f*** do i plug those on a mini?

Sorry Steve, i really wanna get legal, but you are forcing my hand to the OSX86 side.

Once again just my two cents.

So will Apple TV do everything the Airport extreme base station does as well? re:NAS I hope so, for the price, it would be silly to have to buy them both.

You need a Airport Extreme or a simple wireless network!

So its not a router or something!

The menu is cool. I hope we can get it for OS X!

I really was exspecting a update on their displays. High end monitors without HDCP, theyre gonna get some pretty unhappy customers, when bluray/hd dvd hits big, when they cant play next gen dvds on their 30 inch display, 2000$+

That's a great point. I paid something like $399 for my lifedrive by palm with it's 4GB harddrive and i would rather have this iphone for only $100 more...I only hope software for this 'pda' is available too at some point. medical programs at this time are tough to fine in pocketpc format instead of palm so I don't imagine software for this will be available for a long time. something to look forward to, perhaps a look ahead at the elusive osx pda

Strip22 - I imagine they are trying to waitout the blu-ray/hddvd war...I would assume they would go with blu-ray as HDdvd is backed by M$ but who knows and I could be wrong

I don't see anything on apples site that mentions GPS. When they ran through the demo did the phone actually know where it was? Was it GPS or was it getting its position from the cell tower?

Boo. I was really hoping we'd see a *real* Apple desktop here. Instead we get another iPod with even more features I don't want. Would it kill someone to release a cellphone that just makes calls and texts? And would it kill Apple to release a real desktop?

Hmm I realyl like the presented items but I amhighly disapointed about the loose of any live sign from Leopard as well as that I did not see any ign of any Mac there. Isn't it called "Macworld"? Where is the "Mac"?

Otherwise I must disagre with ppl afraid Apple leaving Computer market. It's the origin of Apple and they make big $$ with it. OSx become a real competitinor even if it has only less % market atm. Leo will be the next impact. maybe we just have to be patient a bit :-)

I have only been using OSX86 on my PC for about a week and I have a couple of problems with its stability and performance.

I am a long time PC user and always shunned Macs, but OSX has taught me the error of my ways and I want a Mac.

I was holding off for today expecting an update to the Mac Mini with Core 2 Duo and a better GFX chip than GMA950. I was also expecting an update to iLife with loads of cool features. When the Online stores were taken off line during the keynote I got really excited and was even considering rushing round to my local Apple Store.

I am now so dissappointed. The phone is really cool, but I can't believe they tied it in with an operator (like MS OEMs nearly always do). It would have been better for me if they made it available without a contract. Also, no 3G!! Only Orange in the UK support EDGE and it sucks compared to HSPDA which is now on all the networks. Also, very expensive.

So, looks like no going legit for me. The Mac Mini is too puny, I already have a laptop that I like, and the Mac Pro is too expensive.

For a split second, I wondered why I was going around with a phone and an iPod in my pockets all the time. Then I realized that I had twenty gigabytes of music, and five gigabytes of music.

Maybe when a larger flash version comes out. Or some sort of an amazingly small HDD. But until then, I'm sticking with my camera phone and iPod video.

And why cingular? Why do they get all the fun toys?

Don't worry about the word "MAC" in MacWorld, it's like Apple, inc., but without Computer in it! Hahaha! May be Apple, inc. have decided to change their policy, and they wanted us to die before seeing "the world's most advanced operating system". At least it would be nice to see something which is really connected to MAC.....as Operating system or just another (less important than the iPhone) computer! Here's 12 AM and I just can't stay awake all night! Sorry guys I gave up waiting.....I'm just disappointed!

I'm getting my license soon so a phone is essential. I'll definatly get the iPhone. I wish we could have seen stuff on X.5. That's what I really wanted to see.

And don't bash Apple for changing their name. Just because they are moving into other things doesn't mean they will forget about Mac OS X. If you didn't notice, Mac OS X is in the iPhone so if they work on the computer version then they can change it around and into a phone version. If anything they will be working even harder on the OS.

Same GPS that all phones have in them. That is, all phones since 2005 or so. It's just most phones only allow access to it for 911 services...or 999 or whatever in the UK.

I, like everyone else, would have liked to see an update on Leopard features or a demo or something, but MacWorld is a couple of days long expo about macs (or rather apple), it's not StevenoteWorld, it's not just the keynote.

It's unlikely they will release new products on macworld, but the fact that we saw little about macs on the keynote doesn't change content of the lectures and other stuff.

Does anyone think that since Macworld runs until the end of the week, they might just have another "stevenote" or at least have Schiller release new Macs and talk about Leopard?
