Hi. I'm Jason.

Swad

Like I mentioned last week, I thought it’d be a good time to formally introduce myself to our community. You’ve known me as “Mashugly” and “Mash” for well over a year now, and now that a lot of you are my good friends, I wanted to let you know a little more about me.

My name is Jason Swadley and I’ll be graduating from Drury University in May with dual degrees in Political Science and Speech Communication. Feel free to call me by my full name, but all my friends call me “Swad.” I live in Springfield, Missouri, a fairly large city in the middle of the U.S. and in one of the most beautiful parts of the country (the Ozarks). Like I mentioned in our introduction thread, I have a wide variety of interests – I love music, the outdoors, baseball, technology, philosophy, etc.

The name “Mashugly” came from our high school production of the play M*A*S*H. My character’s nickname was “Ugly” – hence Mashugly. The character’s real name in the play was John Black, which was the pseudonym I’ve been using for the site until now.

So, that’s me – I’m not really anyone terribly special, just someone who realized that it’d be great to have a place to talk about Intel and x86 based Macs. I hope this site has brought you as much fun as it has me.

Here’s to many more years for the work Mashugly started.

- Swad

Swad, this guy needs to get kicked off. Serious. He's like a toilet that won’t flush.

I like having bofors around and he makes a good point that is completely relevant, even if it comes off as offensive :P

Well, bofors, I'm of the opinion that as long as you attend a college that actually places an importance on students, you'll get out of your education about as much as you put into it. Drury is certainly no Harvard, but the faculty is top notch and it's a great "real" university. Highly recommended.

Interesting recognition of note:

National Recognition

USNews College Rankings

Drury has been at or near the top of the "Great Schools, Great Prices" list for the Midwest since 1999, including five years in the #1 slot. In 2006, it was ranked #3. Additionally, DU was ranked by US News & World Report as #9 on the list of Best Master's Universities in the Midwest for 2006 (7th consecutive year in top 15).

The Princeton Review - Best Midwestern College

Drury University was given the award Best Midwestern College in 2007

by the Princeton Review.

There are actually a couple of Drury grads on this forum. We're all pretty proud of our alma mater.

Well, at least the Princeton Review got it right, Drury is just a college.

Not even a real university? Someone's on a rampage this week.

Drury does not have a medical school, a law school, an engineering school or even a business school, nor is it a research institution. These are of course the normal characteristics of a university.

I really don't know what your problem is but it's getting tiring reading posts from you that all mean to insult or offend people.

I am sorry, but I think it is just ridiculous for places like Drury to get away with marketing themselves as "universities". I know the difference and the people running these schools should obviously know the difference too. It is clear to me that they should not be misleading the public this way.

It's one of the best universities in the Midwest ...

Here is the "real" US News & World Report list of top universities in America: http://www.usnews.com/usnews/edu/college/r...tudoc_brief.php

These are best in the Midwest:

9. University of Chicago

12. Washington University in St. Louis

14. Northwestern University(IL)

20. University of Notre Dame(IN)

21. Carnegie Mellon University(PA)

24. University of Michigan—Ann Arbor *

34. Univ. of Wisconsin—Madison *

38. Case Western Reserve Univ.(OH)

41. U. of Illinois—Urbana - Champaign *

Those below that are certainly not among the best in the Midwest and I do not even see Drury on the list at all (which is no surprise to me because I have never even heard of it before).

I doubt anyone in the real world gives a {censored} about the difference between a university and a college, especially given a liberal-arts field. They're all universities to the Brits anyway. So why don't we drop this damn-near useless tangent?

Bofors-

I'm not sure what prompted this tirade, but I'd like to get this thread back on track, so I've cleaned it up and won't entertain any other posts that aren't introduction-related.

First, you know not of what you speak. Drury is a true University - among all the rest of their programs, they have semi-autonomous Architecture (a first among liberal arts schools) and a Business school with a world-renowned SIFE team. Also, if you read the part about the US News article, you'll see that Drury was on a different list. (Reading training comes standard with tuition here, just in case ya need it :censored2:) Also, guess who graduated from Drury?

Yeah. Bob Barker. (He's speaking at graduation this year) Bob Barker is like Mike Ditka - he wins. :wallbash:

I'm not sure what prompted this tirade...

I am sorry this came across as a personal attack, I was just trying to make a clear, simple and objective point. Since it is apparently not obvious to some people here, I can very easliy explain in detail why the issues I raised are very important, but let's move on now...

I am actually interested in your major, Political Science. I have not been formally exposed to this subject, but I started looking into it myself a few months ago because I think it is an important topic, one that I want to know more about.

However, in a cursory search I was unable to find anything on the Internet that simply laid out the fundemental theories or even ideas on which Political Science is based. In short, I found the field to be rather "unscientific". Am I missing something or can you lay out basis for Political Science for us here?

Sure, bofors.

I know that Political Science does seem like a bit of a misnomer, but it's actually quite scientific. The discipline ranges from the philosophical, such as studying Locke, Hobbes, Hayek, etc, to the very empirical study of voters, voter preferences, game theory, etc. But those are really the ways to approach the studies - the main subfields here in the US are Formal Theory (the quantitative stuff), International Relations, Comparative Politics (studying governmental institutions), Political Theory, and American Government.

I love it - it's one of the most relevant (as in, real world impact) studies out there.

Watch all seven seasons of "The West Wing" start to finish, read all the Tom Clancy books (fiction) you can get your hands on... that's all the political science you'll ever need...

hehe

Happy New Year, folks... let's make this a good one...

Great, this is the part I am interested in. Can you tell us what is the bass for the Formal Theory?

Basically, I am looking for a set of postulates, equations and/or principles that can be said to account for political phenomena in general. Does this exist and if so, can you tell what they are or provide a link to a reference?

I am also wondering if you have heard of the so-called "mushroom" theory of Political Science and if there are other similiar types of theories in the field.

First off, THANKS for making this site Swad! This i the best newest thing I've learned/done in a while computer wise. I'm bored with Windows and Linux lacks what I needed. I was bored one day searching around and I stumbled across this site. So.. THANKS!

Now, on to me. I'm John from Tucson, AZ. I'm 24 and I've been playing with computers since I was 9. I was big into gaming, played a lot of Nintendo, Genesis, SNES, N64, PSONE.... and then I got big into computer gaming. I started with Windows 95, then I continued to love computers ever since I started gaming on them. I built my first PC at 14, in 1997. Was a K6II AMD 400, 64mb of SD-Ram, a Riva TNT AGP card, Quantom Fireball Hard Drive, was built for gaming. I built my first website at 14, and now I'm a computer technician II (level 2 of 3... ooohhh ahhhh! :( ) at a hospital in Tucson. I'm also into cars and I've built many sites/forums to bring car lovers together. Here are some of the sites: bB Squad, EK Squad, AZMazdaClub (Formerly Mazdasports). I love computers and technology, and now I love Mac's and of course Mac OSX thanks to this website.
