Wow, what a crazy day. Just a few hours after learning that OSx86 10.4.4 had been hacked by maxxuss, Apple released 10.4.5 updates for both the PPC and Intel versions of OS X.

There are a ton of fixes that come with this update, especially for OSx86. According to Apple, the update “is recommended for all users and includes general operating system fixes, as well as specific fixes for the following applications and technologies: iChat video conferencing, Safari rendering of web pages, usability of Dashboard and widgets, viewing of QuickTime streaming media behind a firewall, printing to some Epson printer models, iDisk and Portable Home Directory syncing, time zone and daylight savings for 2006 and 2007, VPN connections to Cisco servers when using NAT, compatibility with third party applications and devices.”

And as per this TUAW post, the Intel version is substantially larger than the PPC version, leaving the impression that there was much more to fix. We’ll have to give it some time to hear all the improvements and their effects before we know much more.

One thing we do know – the update includes a new mach_kernel and a few other goodies that are almost certainly not compatible with the maxxuss hacks of the day.

Coincidence? We’ll report, you decide. :D

Now, to await confirmation of whether this update breaks compatibility with Maxxus's 10.4.4 patches. I'd assume yes, since it does replace the existing mach_kernel. Then again, it could be as simple as replacing the updated one with the patched one.

Wow Maxxuss is like being stalked by apple..right after he cracks it, apple releases an update :)

well this is really something...

i wonder if osx86 will ever be able to fully comply with the standards set by real macs software-wise, or if we'll always have to crack to get every new version working properly...

one thing's for sure though: the new update could always be patched seperately and installed to 10.4.4 machines with minimal patches applied...

I am really hoping that the 10.4.5 patch is cracked so we don't all have to do a full reinstall and can just upgrade from 10.4.4.

Most binaries from the 10.4.5 update work fine in my 10.4.3 8F1099 system. The exceptions are libSystem.B.dylib, and iChat.

NOTICE:

Apple also today announced they will be shipping the MacBook Pros this week, and announced an upgraded processor, with no additional charge. It's pretty unbelievable that Apple would be able to make changes and release an update within a day. I'd bet that this update has to do with some last-minute fixes related to the MacBooks, and it's simply coincidence that it was released the same day as Maxxuss' crack. I would also bet that when people receive their new MacBooks, they will find 10.4.5 on there. We'll hear in a few days, I guess.

Apple seems to be careless about the current state of the OSX86 project, because of all the transition problems they are forced to make their programmers fix bugs instead of enhancing security. I have a feeling that in about 6 months when the real focus is on Leopard we will see new much more sophisticated attempts from Apple to lock out Maxxus.

Personally, i think its purely coincidental.

but cool none the less.

just my two cents.

I read in another forum that there are updated Nvidia kexts in the Intel release of 10.4.5... can anyone confirm/deny this? Is there anyway we can attempt to use these kexts??

That's not definitive, do a checksum on them.

i very much agree that the size is not definite, but what are the chances of Apple adding the missing calls with making a noticable dent in the size of the kext?

I really hope i am wrong.

Apple probably won't even lock out Maxxuss on Leopard... since if it's hackable, some PC user can just get the Leopard in Apple Store... but they won't make it too easy so people who doesn't know computer will still have to buy Apple Hardware...

so... it will be...

1st kind of ppl: buy Apple Hardware... like I do for the laptop.

2nd kind of ppl: use own hardware and upgrade every 6 months (like CPU/RAM/Graphic card), and buy Leopard and hacked it... I will do it for my desktop in the future.

3rd kind of ppl: use own hardware and download Leopard...

well~ There will always be 3rd kind of ppl in the world... does it worth spending hundreds of thousands of dollar on it and just cost Maxxuss or other hacker a few extra times? well~ I won't really do that though...

And if it become un-hackable... then I will use my less-power laptop to do the work... just slower, but it's ok with me...

they're not exactly the same, because they have been recompiled to fit the new kernel, but how are they gonna add the hundreds of missing symbols while keeping the exact same size in bytes?

Maybe but, the kext are there, and it is possible to be the ones or not. I just downloaded the os x x86 update and saw in it there the Nvidia kext. If it wasn't an update to the old ones why did the put them there in the first place (I think).

I won't think on trying to load them, I think they need the 10.4.5 kernel. So let's wait for God (Maxxuss) for an answear to ower prayrs.

I understood why the unfinished Nvidia kexts were in the dev versions (10.1-10.3) of Tiger x86, but why would Apple include unfinished drivers in the commercial release of their x86 Macs?
Mr. Bond

Simply because they weren't ever going to be needed, if you were running on legitimate, Apple supported hardware. Their completion is irrelevant if your running on a MacBook or iMac. Of course, why include them if they weren't going to be used? Who knows...though I doubt it's really some "Apple wants to help us hackers" conspiracy idea.

what about graphic guys who need a quadro video card? Also if you upgrade to 10.4.4 can you then update to 10.4.5 with no problemos?

blinksilver

Bobo, don't worry too much, 10.4.4 won't even bring a stable gui yet so, you videocard drivers are of little importance : ), but i doubt it working as 10.4.5 has a new kernel. As for the guy who need a quadro, on an intel mac. I think the apple line is something like "wait till september" for the "macPower Pro" or what other stupid name they come up with.

Hi folks, Is it possible that nVidia drivers works on this 10.4.4 release? Like first offical version, this could be possible, don't you think?

R. Bear Helms

It's a bit surprising they release nVidia drivers at all, since their products don't use those chips - maybe this is a warning to ATI not to screw with their contract since they seem poised to change to nVidia overnight if needs be.

Therefore, you can release the crappiest nVidia drivers for OS X imaginable - no genuine customer will have a problem! :dev:
