802.11n Comes to Intel Macs

sHARD>>

Remember all those rumors of 802.11n WiFi in Intel Macs? Well, it's coming soon to all Core 2 Duo units. InsanelyMac user neckarb's sharp eyes found a small note on the new Airport Extreme's product page:

What's in the Box: CD with AirPort Utility (Mac and Windows), 802.11n Enabler for Core 2 Duo and Xeon-based Macintosh computers (except 17-inch 1.83GHz iMac).

What's that mean? It seems that all newer iMacs, MacBooks, MacBook Pros, and Mac Pros will be able to get in on the 802.11n goodness, for free.

Product pages still note "Built-in 54 Mbps AirPort Extreme (802.11g)", so it seems the upgrade is not yet in the wild.

When you say newer do you mean ones to come out or new ones out now?

And what do you mean for free? I always assumes when a final version of n came out all macs/pc would upgrade for free? BTW that reminds me, when did n finalise?

N has not finalized, its draft n to use with apple tv. All of the new macs came with wireless n disabled, but thier is a cd now with airport base stations to unlock wireless n for free.

Yeah, except the new AP isn't scheduled to ship until next month. I sure hope this isn't an upgrade that's Leo only...

Peace

The whole reason why so many people expected a new AirPort with 802.11n was that many realized the newer Macs had 802.11n-capable cards installed. I hate to say it, but this isn't anything really new.

It's the whole "cart before the wagon" thing, I know...

Well, we all saw this coming.

Not that I'll be able to use it... I have a G router, and no money to buy a draft-N router just for the extra speed. Blah.

I'm not saying this isn't good news but to be honest I’m not really that bothered.

Would have been completely different if n was finalised and then apple told us the new mac support/world support the final n release.

I need to buy a router and a Macbook in a few months and was considering the n draft routers. I could wait for the draft to be standardised and then buy it all but that could take long. What to do.... :(

My guess is it's HIGHLY unlikely for there to be many, if any changes, considering Cisco (Linksys), D-Link, Buffalo, Netgear, and now Apple Inc are all now "fully" vested in the current draft n...

Unless "draft-n" still means variations between brands, I wouldn't worry about incompatibility in the future.

An interesting read:

[...]the claim Apple’s making is that it _can’t_ give you the 802.11n-unlocking software for free. The reason: the Core 2 Duo Macs weren’t advertised as 802.11n-ready, and a little law called the Sarbanes-Oxley Act supposedly prohibits Apple from giving away an unadvertised new feature for one of its products.

yeah i must admit it is cool, but for me, my wireless server is about 5 metres from my desktop and xbox 360. so the signal is always excellent, and plus 54Mbps is more than enough bandwidth for 720p HD content!

This is good news to me I did not know that core 2 systems had n.

The one disappointment I find with the new AirPort Extreme Base Station is the lack of Gigabit Ethernet. All of Apples new computers have Gigabit so why only offer 10/100 ports on the AirPort :( for $200CAD I would expect them.

Just a personal note, this was my evil 666 post :)
