I got back from a few days in NYC just yesterday, and I had a fantastic time. It really was a great experience of American culture.

One thing I noticed though was how different the commercials (pffft, Americanish :D ) were. They were just everywhere! It seemed I ended up watching more commercials than TV shows, and I laughed at how closed captioning could be provided by Taco Bell. Every channel you view in the US has crazy amounts of advertising on it. Heck, you even get Viagra adverts in the US (I thought we had spam for that).

On the other side of the coin, in the UK, we pay a TV license fee (about £10 a month) and then there are no 3rd party commercials and you can watch an hour long program without seeing a single advert.

ITV, however, does not charge you a TV license, and therefore shows adverts every 15 mins. Far less than American TV channels, but still an irritating number. And now they have plans to increase the number of adverts in an hour.

So what do you think?

I don't think we can get rid of advertising completely because adverising is the thing TV companies make their money from...

Sometimes I like adverts as they bring me some kind of information but mostly advertising is very annoyong..

What about Sattelite channels? In Russia we have nice Sattelite TV and there wasn't any advertising for a long time..

But now it is appearing gradually and now we already have rather broad advertising on Sattelite TV channels. I think it is unfair. Providers try to grab money from anyone they can: from adverisers and from us. We pay money for TV, not for watching adverising.. ;)

I try to PVR, watch stuff On-Demand or stick to one of the BBCs channels usually News24.

I think American TV has the same amount of adverts as us, they are just on at stupid times at the beginning and end of programs as well as in between them so it seems like their is more.

With the more ways of watching TV (On-Demand, PVR, Internet) I can see the License Fee subsidizing ITV, C4 and Five a lot more.

After all inst the internet's advert spend about to overtake TVs in a few years time.

God, I hate advertising so much that I don't even turn on the damn TV at home anymore except for watching DVDs or playing games. I have much more free time that I can share with family and friends now :)

I recommend this site for all of you who wish to get rid of the "stupid box":

its a form of mind control perpetuated by the government in order to keep the populace asleep while eroding their civil liberties that their forefathers fought and died to obtain.

er.. i mean, of course, its just a harmless form of entertainment that we all love. ahem.

I thought you were OryHara/JohntheSavage for a second there ;)

I had adverts on TV Shows. Especially on CSI. Every 15 mins there is that bloody KIA advert which I HATE HATE HATE!!!.

Anyway now a days I just get my TV Shows on Demand (Virgin TV On Demand) and from other places :|

TV Commercials/Adverts?.Oh,no...

I think that If you have any need, make a research, compare, then make your choice...

I am not JhontheSavage, but certainly they do it (for free)

I voted that I like ads because some of them are quite clever and I honestly view them as an art form. Being good at conveying a products greatness or value in a short time period requires skill.

That is really awesome! I've never heard of anything like that until now.

Of course, I don't watch much TV. I watch from 10-11:15 or so every night but thats it.

nice time, marvin, went to NYC to end up in front of TV :)

Have you seen Times Square? :(

But yeah, I hate commercials, no matter how funny or idiotic they are. There are way too many. I don't even watch live TV anymore. I watch all my TV that my TiVo recorded earlier that day/an hour ago. My friend has an awesome TiVo-type thing that automatically skips commercials. But unfortunately that company was sued and they don't have that in their products anymore. If I don't watch it off of iTunes it's BitTorrent, and if it's not that, it's iTunes. I HATE COMMERCIALS.

It really was a great experience of American culture.

I'm sorry but that is one of the funniest quotes I've seen all day.

Times Square was amazing. It was like being on a web page, without Adblock Plus :)
