qbattersby
Apple has recently released iPod Software Update 1.3 for the fifth generation (5G and 5.5G) iPods. Unfortunately the only information from the package is that it contains “Bug Fixes”. Some owners have reported it fixes a problem where the iPod would stop displaying songs or device content. Personally I believe this is Apple’s attempt at polishing off an older product before letting go and moving on, however others have speculated this update addresses some of the new iTunes features such as movie rentals. If any readers have installed the update and discover anything new let us know by commenting. NatMusak
it updates the usb connection/charging screen to show the charge state in the form of a scroll gauge. also seems to mount in windows itunes faster than before Hmm, just updated my 5.5gen iPod Video and I'm not seeing what you're talking about. Are you only trying this with iTunes for Windows? I'm using Mac OS X Tiger 10.4.11 and iTunes 7.6.1. I don't think Apple dropping support for these iPods is that bad, nor avoidable. The iPod classic uses new hardware that can handle CoverFlow, but it's still a stretch. I wouldn't doubt they stop making these hard-drive based iPods in a year or so when flash/ssd storage becomes more affordable. The classic will soon lack a place in Apple's lineup. - iPod shuffle: for those who want something ultra portable and durable for the gym. - iPod nano: for portable videos, movie rentals, and browsing with CoverFlow. - iPod touch: soon enough will have 64GB and (what I can't wait for) 128GB, in addition to WiFi, a nice screen for video, touch controls, etc. - iPhone: a great phone, internet device, and an iPod for those who don't need to carry a large music collection. iPod touch is really a kind of teaser for overseas markets where iPhone isn't yet available. iPod classic only has an advantage on the storage side, thus it's headed for the chopping block.
