Yes, that board should work fine. The GA-EX38-DS34 and the Gigabyte P35-DS3P/DS3R/DS4 boards have identical hardware, except your motherboard uses the new Intel X38 chipset and supports faster RAM :)

I tried S3 sleep with the SpeedStep kernel, just resulted in a useless black screen (couldn't wake), but using the netkas sleep kernel S3 may work, although I haven't tried it yet myself.

Has anyone got S3 sleep to work on these boards?

 

Have S3 sleep working on a GA-P35-DS3 Rev. 1.0 with the vanilla 9.2.2 kernel.

Drawback: reboot and shutdown don't work with this kernel.

Hi all,

I successfully installed Kalyway 10.5.2 on my rig as stated below:

Gigabyte EP35-DS3 mb

2GB Corsair 800 XMS DHX Ram

MSI NX8800GT 512DDR3 Graphics card

Seagate 320GB 7200rpm 16MB cache Hard Disk

Lite-On DVDRW

Samsung 226BW LCD monitor.

Thanks to pcwiz for the tutorial guide.

 

I then removed the hard disk and installed in the following:

Asus P5B mb

2GB Corsair 800 XMS Ram

Asus EN7900GS Top 256 MB graphics card

Seagate 320GB 7200rpm 16MB cache Hard Disk

Sony DVDRW

and everything works except no soundin via mic input

and World of Worldcraft just refused to run without any error msgs after successful installation.

Any pointers to the things work?

Why not install Kalyway with a fresh install on your P5B? the P5B is a very well supported mobo, but it obviously has different hardware, so the drivers will need to be matched for that mobo, as well as your video card.

 

I'm sure the reason WoW will not play is because you may or may not have the proper video drivers (you did not specify!) and most likely the sound card drivers are incorrect as well.

 

I recommend using a P5B install guide and asking those familiar with that board for help. This thread is for the Gigabyte P35-DSx board.

First of all have to thank pcwiz for the well written documents and the great installer. You just saved me $2000 not buying the Mac pro, and if it wasn't for your guide, probably I would have bought the MP by now.

 

Anyways, I followed the guide last week and got almost everything working, it was much easier than I would have imagined. I solved most of my problems by playing around with the BIOS, actually now I'm having more problems with XP SP3 than I do with Leo, and I think it has something to do with the BIOS settings.

 

Problems I'm currently experiencing, 1 and 2 are minor, but I really need to fix number 4.

 

1) Too many problems with AHCI, first of all XP won't boot with the AHCI (BSOD), and sometimes before an OS is booted AHCI fails to find any SATA devices, or sometimes it takes 15 mins. So I have disabled AHCI and set the Ctrl Mode to IDE, the system feels a bit slower without AHCI but I think it's just an illusion. Is there really a benefit of having the AHCI enabled? Oh and by the way, with the AHCI disabled the SATA hard drives won't show as external.

 

2) I installed the Sleep Kernel and not the SpeedStep and sleep still does not work with S1 or S3. However I'm ok with it because on my old G5 the sleep didn't work after installing Leopard so I'm used to it, but my question is, can I now remove the sleep kernel and install Speedstep instead?

 

3) eSATA Hot Plugging doesn't work, is there a script that could fix this? It actually does show up in Disk Utility but finder won't see it unless I boot again with the eSATA turned on.

 

4) I have a DSP PCI card (for audio production) that works fine with Leopard, but when it's physically installed I can't boot into windows. There is nothing wrong with this card, it works fine with Leo, I installed the drivers for my card on XP and Leo before I physically installed it as always. This is actually the worst problem I'm having at the moment. However VM Fusion will boot the XP partition fine with the same PCI card installed. but if I restarted and wanted to boot into windows I couldn't unless I remove the card.

Hello Everyone,

 

All my computer parts are finally here so I'll be constructing my box over the extended holiday weekend.

 

Quick questions regarding installing Nvidia support for my 8800GT 512M. I did a search as recommended in ~pcwiz's guide...but it's still not clear to me.

 

1) At what point do I install the Nvidia support files? After or before the combo upgrade to 10.5.2? Or not at all?

 

2) Which Nvidia support file do I install?

A) Punk92's Nvidia 3.0 Beta installer?

;) Punk92's Nvidia V1.9 installer?

C) Modified OpenGL.framework

D) None of the above you jerk!

1) No, after you install the SATA driver with my package there is pretty much no advantage to ACHI other than hot swappable drives. It should be more or less the same speed with AHCI and native IDE. However, if you really want to, there is a guide that tells you how to turn AHCI on in XP SP2 with ICH9 (that's what these Gigabyte boards have).

 

2) Just re run my installer and choose SpeedStep kernel (uncheck everything else) and install.

 

3) Are you trying this with AHCI enabled or disabled?

 

4) That is a problem. A solution doesn't come to mind at the moment. Search on Google and see if others are having problems with that same card and XP.

Go with either Punk92 V2.0 or V3.0 installer, or go with agrafuese's GFX method.

1) So I'm going to leave it disabled, but see #3.

2) Done.

3) With AHCI enabled disk utility does recognize the drive, but finder can't.

Warning! Do not use: “Kalyway_10.5.2_DVD_Intel_Amd.iso”. I tried that first while waiting for the “kalyway_leo_10.5.1.iso” file to download...took over 3 days for some reason.

 

Anyway “Kalyway_10.5.2_DVD_Intel_Amd.iso” is riddled with problems. No restart/shutdown, no hot sync with USB until you install a patch, is just a few of the many problems.

 

Going from “kalyway_leo_10.5.1.iso” to “KalywayUpdCombo10.5.2.pkg” and using ~pcwiz’s new pack installer and instructions is the way to go.

 

My install went very smooth using this guide. I haven’t tested everything but USB and Firewire works...no system freezes and restart/shutdown works also. System is fast as all heck!

I'm going to give this a try with my Intel DP35DP/ E6750/ Geforce 8400 GS based system.

But I have a PIONEER DVR-115D, which is IDE. Some report IDE works other says it doesn't. I also have a USB DVD drive (LG GSA-E60L) and I have been reading USB drives also work in some cases. So should I even bother trying with them or should I just get a SATA DVD drive already?

Another question is about dual boot. I took a look at the guide and it mentions nothing about dual boot. My machine currently has XP. Can I keep it? If so, should I install another HDD to install OSX on or should I use the same HDD (Samsung HD252KJ)?

From all my research, before I took the plunge, I'd recommend avoid using IDE DVD drives as very few were successful. Not sure about external DVD drives.

 

I'm still researching the dual-booting thing. Probably easiest is to install another hard drive. Best to ask here: http://forum.insanelymac.com/index.php?showforum=104

 

Yes, I was thinking of installing another drive, but then you need to keep going into the BIOS to change the boot order back and forth. Also will XP run fine under the modified BIOS need to run OSX? So many things to consider.

The installation shouldn't harm XP, but in case it does back up XP. For dual booting OS X and XP check out chain0. There is NO modified BIOS required for this, the default BIOS will work fine.

I see, cool. So might as well start with Kalyway 10.5.2 as opposed to 10.5.1?

And I can just get a working audio patch separately, right?

 

I'd avoid using the full Kalyway 10.5.2 install.

 

Using this guide and going from Kalyway 10.5.1 to Kalyway 10.5.2 via the Kalyway combo update is the smoothest install.

Just a quick update. Looks like all is working... the 8800GT is recognized correctly and the sound is working. I had to reapply PCwiz's Gigabyte GA-P35-DS3P-DS3R-DS4 installer to get the sound working (ALC889A).

 

Have a minor problem with shutting down...

On the first shutdown the computer will reboot, but the immediate second shutdown works.

 

All sata's are working too on the GIGABYTE GA-EX38-DS4
