How to get 2-Finger (or 1-finger) scrolling working on MOST laptop trackpads

just noticed something odd after 10.5.6. thought I figured this out already, but that wouldn't be fun, would it? I loose my 1fingerscroll when I unplug my usb mouse. at the same time the mouse tab under system preferences disappears as well. the trackpad prefpane is still there but fingerscrolling stops working. when I plug my mouse back in everything works just like before and the mouse tab comes back...

anybody else has this and may have a solution? maybe I should get rid of the trackpad prefpane moved out of keyboard/mouse prefpane and get my old keyboard prefpane with trackpad tab back (10.5.5). I know it worked fine with that.

edit1: ok, just used my 10.5.5 keyboard prefpane and left the edited trackpad prefpane from 10.5.6 in there. fingerscrolling stays on now after unplugging my mouse. I guess this has been said in a different context above...

thanks

What's up about the vostro 1700 ?

I read that 1 or 2 finger scrolling didn't work on the vostro 1700...So, is there a fix? Does someone have a working scrolling?

Thanks.

Nicolas

I never did get my Inspiron 1720 working (same issues as the Vostro 1700). HOWEVER, I have become quite fond of scrolling by highlighting text and moving the cursor to the edge of the screen (so it highlights off the screen causing a scrolling effect). Works good enough for me, so I never even tried getting scrolling to work after finding that trick. :) Hopefully the trick will provide some sanity while we seek a solution, but in all honesty, once you get use to it, its very satisfying.

Hi!

I'm sorry, but i'm tired of searching on forums how to resolve my problem...

i have DELL Inspiron 1520 with synaptics touchpad, and i really want to have 1 or 2 finger scrolling...

Certainly, i tried using this faq. As the result, i got toooo sensitive touchpad (trembling), and i cannot load FFScroll pane (i got text "Loading FFScroll..." only). :D

If anyone with dell 1520 had successfully installed ffscroll, could you help me to resolve my problem?... And, give me your working plist...

Please...

ps. I would like also to teach my hackintosh to understand middle button click by clicking left+right buttons. Is it possible?

Thanks in advance!

after some tweaking and using values which I don't see anywhere else on this thread I have true 2 finger scrolling on my synaptics trackpad. The only problem is that the pointer is not perfectly stable when I have one finger on the trackpad, and this results in a little jump when I put the second finger on it, however no problems with the scrolling and no jumps when I remove my fingers... also I set the trackpad speed at the minimum under mouse preferences. here's my plist

Thank you for making FFScroll.

Using a Dell D830 Lattitude, and was able to get the track pad to do scrolling and tap to click.

I also enabled 3rd button click, if you hold down both mice buttons simultaneously. I use this in Firefox to open a new tabbed window when clicking on a link.

Attached is my com.apple.driver.ApplePS2Trackpad.plist

Note: I like the mouse and scroll fast with a light touch.

Hello everyone,

I noticed that a lot of people have been mentioning that FFScroll doesn't startup. I have attached an app that will startup FFScroll. The default path for the application is /usr/local/bin/ if you have changed that path, change it in the app or move your stuff back to the default location of FFScroll.

To use it, go to System Preferences > Account > Login Items > drag&drop the file in the list and it will work the next time.

I have been using this and it works great!

I've done everything and it seems to work well. The only problem is that when I turn the computer on the trackpad and scrolling have the sensibility to high, so I must run (every time) the sudo killall -9 FFScrollDaemon and the sudo /usr/local/bin/FFScrollDaemon commands... any tips on how can I solve that little problem???

What I noticed is that usually the FFScroll daemon/service will not start during startup, which is why the pointer behaves so weird AND FFScroll (in System Preferences) gets stuck at "Loading...".

Do a test, next time you boot up, instead of killing and restarting the service, go into your Sys Preferences and click on FFScroll app. IF it gets stuck at loading then the service didn't start during startup. If it does load then you have to adjust the settings in the com.apple.driver.ApplePS2Trackpad file

hum.. and how can I "force" the FFScroll daemon/service to load at startup?

Did you try the application that I attached? It basically forces FFScroll to load during startup, after you put it in your your Login Items list.

Hiya Guys,

Just wanted to post my results. I have tried it a couple different ways and get no luck. The mouse and keyboard just lock up and I have to reinstall the original kext.

Laptop is a Dell XPS 1730 with a Synaptics trackpad. Not sure how you guys actually got this to work! :)

followed the directions, but dont worry this doesnt work that great... at least for me... it kinda makes my mouse move not so good, not fluid, but 1/2 finger scrolling works really well.

I tried to use FF on my HP Pavillion dv6263us but no success.

I lost a LOT of precision on tap click. Couldn't make 2-finger or even 1-finger scroll to work. Actually worked in a very strange way.

I got rid of it.

Any alternative solution to a simple scroll using the pad? I mean, I just wanna use the right side of the trackpad to scroll vertically. Is this possible?

thanks

yes, it is possible.

1 - by deleting the following,

<key>ALPS GlidePoint</key>

<dict>

<key>CFBundleIdentifier</key>

<string>com.apple.driver.ApplePS2Trackpad</string>

<key>IOClass</key>

<string>ApplePS2ALPSGlidePoint</string>

<key>IOProbeScore</key>

<integer>1000</integer>

<key>IOProviderClass</key>

<string>ApplePS2MouseDevice</string>

</dict>

and the name APPLE in,

<string>ApplePS2SynapticsTouchPad</string>

<string>ApplePS2MouseDevice</string>

from :

/System/Library/Extensions/ApplePS2Controller.kext/Contents/Plugins/ApplePS2Trackpad.kext/Contents

/Info.plist

2 - reboot into safe mode ( -x at Darwin prompt), repair permissons in Disk Util

3- reboot, you're done !

your trackpad wil be recgnized as as mouse in System Preferences but all works (tapping, and vert scroll)

no need a major install

Thank you, ranova.

I apply it to my Satellite A200-MR1 with ALPS touch pad. After several reboots, it works with default setting and easy to use. :)

Thank you, Donkey.

I use your startup program and feel better. I also removed two folders (FFScroll...) from /Library/StartupItems folder.

Anyone has idea or experience on how to set the tapping harder to trigger. Thank you in advance.

Ranova, this is working just great on my Vostro 1500. Thanks for the writeup.

I figured I'd post a simple script that helps with breaking the monotony of killing the ffscrolldaemon as well as copying the plist to the 2 directories and restarting the ffscrolldaemon.

This way you can just tweak the settings in the plist file and do a single "sudo RestartTrackPad" and your ready to test

create a new file in terminal via nano or whatever(I'm a linux guy I use vi) in the same directory as the com.apple.driver.ApplePS2Trackpad.plist that you want to modify.

copy/paste the following text into the file

sudo killall -9 FFScrollDaemon

cp com.apple.driver.ApplePS2Trackpad.plist ~/Library/Preferences

cp com.apple.driver.ApplePS2Trackpad.plist /Library/Preferences

sudo /usr/local/bin/FFScrollDaemon

Save the file.

Then in terminal

sudo chmod +x RestartTrackPad

now your ready to tweak.

modify the plist file to your hearts content then run the script...Your trackpad is ready to test.
