shanus
I have an ATI x1650 with 256mb ram on an intel board with a core2 duo. I have done my research and with the help of the board, some hex editing and terminal magic... I have it running at native 1680x1050 with QE and CI enabled and working. OpenGL - all is well. I have installed and updated to 10.5.2 and installed the Graphics Update. The card works well, everything is fast and works well. My issue is that the Mac (the Hack?) will randomly freeze... at least in that the screen doesn't respond. The machine still is going, if it was playing music, it still plays, if it was burning a cd, it completes the burn fine... I can login with SSH and hit the machine, but I've not had any luck trying to restart the Window Server or the like there. That would be my guess as to what is wrong, the window server goes down.. but Im not sure... When I reboot, there's nothing in the Console that I can see that would hint at what happened... Anyone have any ideas on how to track down exactly what is happening? I've read the 1650 threads pretty well Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/88771-ati-x1650-and-leopard-working-100-almost/ Share on other sites
shanus
OK.. of interest is if I remove the ATIRadeonX1000.kext... I lose CI and QE, but the machine is then stable... so... anyone? The ATI kext is modified as said on this board and it does work, just hangs after awhile... anyone else get a 1650 working stable? Samanoske Akechi
Same exact problem here. HIS Radeon X1650 Pro DDR2 256MB running with the same glitch. Dying to fool with Time Machine since it worked after this fix, but now I can barely keep Leopard running stably for 5 mins. shanus
I gave up on my ATI 1650. It's a good card, it is just not compatible. I picked up an Nvidia 8600GTS and all is well. Just thought I'd add this for closure to this post. shansen
any other cards that are known to be compatible? I ask because the 8600 is rather expensive and since I won't be doing any gaming I'd rather get something cheap. I have the 1650 right now with no luck so am looking to replace. thanks Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/88771-ati-x1650-and-leopard-working-100-almost/#findComment-663487 Share on other sites
Lintendo
Just use the old atindrv.kext from 10.4.5 and there will be no more freezes... shanus
Just use the old atindrv.kext from 10.4.5 and there will be no more freezes... I do not think it is as simple as that. I've researched this for a long time, there are no real success stories with this card. Further, the default apple driver runs the card at 4xx Mhz instead of 600Mhz. There are too many issues around this card. Since it's only worth about $50, your best bet would be to sell your x1650 and replace it with a newer card that is comaptible. The Nvidia 8000 series seems to work really well - mine is awesome and was only $80 - and there are plenty of success stories with these cards. The x1650 seems to be nothing but "help me get this working." Your time is worth something, so take this advice and get a different card. Also, you won't need to use Tiger files on Leopard -- my leopard with the 8600 has 10.5.2 and all the updates (graphics too!) installed and works fine... It's not as simple as that. Are you even talking about running it in Leopard? I didn't have any issues with it in Tiger... but this is LEOPARD as the thread title suggests. As far as getting it working, that wasn't the issue. The issue is it would lock the Hack Mac up randomly - yet often. Maybe you should read all the posts above? Again, based on the large number of posts saying they cannot get this card working properly - please do not post "works fine" unless you are going to post files that make it happen and can back it up. Thanks. Again again, booting up to do a screenshot of QE, CI enabled doesn't count - if it's not reliable - it's not working. Yes, I am talking about Leopard, and yes I got the random lockups too - until I installed the old atindrv.kext... After that it worked fine for me, absolutely no lock ups. just get qe/ci to work with this guide. when your system locks up randomly just copy this file in /System/Library/Extensions (overwrite the existing one) Believe me, I also sent the file to 3 or 4 people and it solved the problem for all of them. After that repair permissions for atindrv.kext: sudo -s (enter your password) chmod -R 755 /System/Library/Extensions/ATINDRV.kext chown -R root:wheel /System/Library/Extensions/ATINDRV.kext rm -rf /System/Library/Extensions.mkext Do a reboot and the freezes are gone. Would surprise if this wouldn't work for you too... please try and tell me what happens edit: i never tested dvi out or any games, so i don't know if that will work... I have a ATI 2900pro card and I had the frozen problem also. I used the ATINDRV as above and so far for 4 hours, I did not see a frozen screen. I believe it works. My config:- Dell 9250 plantinum D. 2G memory ATI 2900 pro graphic card Kalway Leopard DVD upgraded to 10.5.3 The frozen was randomly happened. It last for 2 to 3 min and resumed as normal. Also If switching to album mode in Itunes, it happens. So I believe it is a graphic problem. But now it is fixed!!! Thanks. Just thought I'd add this for closure to this post. Good call, x1650 cards simply do not work with OSx86. I've literally tried every single installer and wasted hours editing the kexts. I've been trying for months to no avail, so I'm also giving up on my x1650. I've got an x1600 in another OSx86 machine that works perfect with any version of OSx86 I put on it.
