wanna buy a new dell laptop but i am a bit puzzled with what resolution i should go for? can you guys help me? what resolution i should go for and why? few things to mention:

  • I am programmer and (generally) prefer more space
  • I do not wear glasses and my eye sight is ok but if i concentrate deeply then my head start aching so i do not want to have a resolution where i have to focus very much.
  • i am not a gamer and neither do i want this laptop for games at all.
  • is it possible to adjust 1680x1050 resolution screen on 1400x900 resolution without loosing quality?
  • what is the trade off between these two resolutions

one more addiditonal question:

As i mentioned that i am not a gamer so i was wondering whether i need a dedicated graphics card or not? i dont care about games but i love windows vista aero (ok mac geeks no offence but you should respect everyone's opinion) and do not want to decrease my base index due to integrated Graphics card. if you guys think that i should still go for dedicated VGA RAM then how much would be ideal for the above resolutions without loosing any bit of vista experience...

cheers

1. Aero get a dedicated gfx card or it runs like {censored}.

2. 1680x1050 is the perfice res for 17" so it might be to high on a smaller screen.

3. the resolution will lose quality no matter what. the monitor will enlarge the pixels and you can get blurry screen if it's a crappy lcd. it all dpends on the panel.

Hi,

I've got a 15.4" T60w with 1680X1050 and I must say I really love the resolution. There is no way I'm setting this on a lesser resolution. If you think you have to concentrate too much, you still can make alot of things bigger in Windows itself (icons, fontsize, etc...) When I see another laptop with lesser resolution I always thinks I wouldn't want to go back :-)

Grtz.

If you want a screenshot of everything with that resolution just let me know :-)

hey please do post few screen shots. also what Graphic card are you using? and how much dedicated RAM? Thanks

Hi,

I've got a X1400 Ati graphic card, think that's 256MB dedicated memory:

I've added some screens of the Vista experience index, which is 4.0 and you see the different part.

Second one is my messy desktop

and the last two are screens of a HD movie (1080) I downloaded, those are really awesome to watch :-)

Awesome dude! do you have an integrated Graphics card or is it having dedicated 256MB RAM?

you desktop is stunning and i did not have any issues with font size.... i think i am looking forward to buy laptop with 1680X1050 screen and a 256 dedicated RAM

I just want to add, if you're eyes are sensitive you may want to go with the 1440x900. When I first got my old laptop (Inspiron 6000, 15.4"), I ordered it with the 1680x1050 screen. When I got it, I tried it for a couple days, but my eyes just couldn't take it. Especially going between my laptop screen and my monitor...things on the laptop screen were just too small to see without strain (i don't like the way a higher DPI setting looks, so I didn't want to use that as an option). Dell sent me a new laptop, but at the time, the 1440x900 wasn't available, so I got stuck going all the way down to 1280x800. My new laptop (Vostro 1500, 15.4") has a 1440x900 screen though, and I really think it's perfect. Plenty of desktop space + things aren't too small. My recommendation is that if you go with a 15.4" laptop, go for the 1440x900, but if you decide to go for the 17", get the 1680x1050. Hope that helps a bit.

Damn...and I thought 1440 x 900 was impressive.

I have a 14" @ 1280 x 800 and don't really like it.

The 24" @ 1920 x 1200 that it's hooked up to, on the other hand, I really like.

My first 15" laptop, an Acer Aspire I bought a little over a year ago had a 1280 x 800 screen, and wasn't too impressive.

My MacBook Pro @ 1440 x 900 was a dream.

I'm interested in seeing a 1680 x 1050 on a 15.4" notebook. I don't think I could take any more resolution than that =p

I have 1680x1050 on Dell 1520 and Vista. Mine came with an Nvidia 8600GT with 256 megs. I love that resolution. Remember you can adjust your text size while the images stay nice and crisp.

damn... i have gone with Xenokira's advise and chose 1400x900.... have i made a mistake? Are the images not crystal clear with this resolution? (btw i saw macbook pro with 1400x900 and i love it) Don, tell me your advise mate...

i felt that now a days shopping is becomming more and more difficult as you have to take million of things into considration before you buy. Like should i go for ipod classic with 160 gig of ram or (and big OR) the stunning beauty "ipod touch" with only 32 gig of ram available.. 1680x1050 or 1440x900? integrated vs dedicated video card? vista or macbook? not to mention the long list of mobile phones...

Why cant i get everything right and why cant i buy everything without regrets? this is the question which i dont know and i feel i am the only so much confused consumer on this planet

1440x900 is just fine. I also saw a Macbook Pro and was really impressed. It should be great for you.

I feel the same way when choosing a computer to buy. All the components are variables meaning there are millions of choices to consider! These things are hard to choose, too much choice is annoying, no doubt. Think hard about what you want and try to appreciate what you have to the fullest. Just be thankful for what you've got, and that you can afford it. Some people can't afford a PC, or an iPod...
