I've installed Kalyways DVD and iATKOS DVD and with both everything went smoothly. But I've noticed that as far as I can tell, when I use Firefox two problems occur. I've tried to reproduce them without Firefox running or with Safari without success.

  1. As I move the curser around often the curser leaves a frozen image of itself at a position it's just been in. This is while the curser itself is still moving (ie. not frozen). As a result you see two curser images on teh screen, one frozen and one reacts normally. The frozen one goes after a few seconds of moving the working curser. It's a little difficult to explain so there's an image below. The working curser is the second one and the other one is frozen there temporarily.
  2. As you can also see from the image there appears an odd square on the browser. This happens when I move the browser around and a small section of what was in that place of before I moved the browser still shows up in the same section. As a result you get the odd square. I've also noticed a small black square can form near the apple icon at times too

So far I've only noticed it happens with Firefox. Not Safari or any other appz. I'm wondering if it has anything to do with my graphics card, which is a GMA950. Both QE and CI seem to be working on my system.

Anyone had the same problem and found a solution?

Thanks for any help.

I had this until I got the 10.5.1 AppleIntelIntegratedFramebuffer.kext. You loose the ability to select the screen size, but you gain a non-tearing Firefox. Oh, and I had to set the screensize in the boot plist to get 1280x1024. There's also problems with X11, which can be solved by adding a "-depth 24" parameter to the launchd plist for X11.

I'm guessing you mean you need to add the following to the boot plist.

<key>Graphics Mode</key>
<string>1280x1024x32@85</string>

What I'm not sure about is what to do with the "32@85" as it says in the wiki:

Note: If your video card is using VESA 2.0 drivers, leave out the '@85' part as it only works on VESA 3.0 will cause the system to reset before getting anywhere.

When I go into System Profile, under my Display it say: 1280 x 1024 @ 75 Hz

Firefox 3 is MUCH BETTER with the mouse tearing, but does not eliminate it. It appears that it happens when the most pointer character changes(from the pointer to another character).

The only total fix I have seen is using the new version of the integratedframbuffer kext, but as has been said that messes up the screen resolution(so it has to be set manually) which was pointed out in another post. For the person asking about the last two settings "32@85"), they are the bits used for color(32) and screen frequency. You probably want to set the color to 32 bit, and for screen frequency you should get the data from the monitor you are using to set it(this should be somewhere in the monitor's manual).

Same sort of problem. Same graphics adaptor, on Thinkpad T60 running Kalyway 10.5.2. I haven't used Firefox yet (just this instant got my wifi working!) but I see this tearing all the time in BBEdit. I wonder if this has something to do with native cocoa apps vs. others, because most of the cocoa apps I've tried have been excellent. Any more reports of how well that kext fixes the issue?

even better, download firefox 3 beta and you no longer have tearing in firefox!

I was trying to live without Firefox and get used to Safari but then I noticed Office 08 also has the same problem. And the tearing just makes it unusable! There's not much point having OS X installed if you can't work on it.

I've tried several times installing the AppleIntelIntegratedFramebuffer.kext on my IAtkos installation without any sucess. Weird thing is it worked the first time round in my Kalaways installation and gave me a lower resolution as expected.

This is what I did:

  • Downloaded the AppleIntelIntegratedFramebuffer.kext from link
  • Copied it into the Extensions folder and replaced
  • Opened Terminal and typed 'chmod -R 755 /System/Library/Extensions/AppleIntelIntegratedFramebuffer.kext'
  • Then in Disk Utilities I Repaired Disk Permission

But I don't see any change. Am I doing something wrong?

this exactly what you do.

download the intel 10.5.1 update from apple.com

use pacifist to extract all the gma950 kexts plus the the AppleIntelIntegratedFramebuffer.kext

backup and then delete the gma950 kexts and AppleIntelIntegratedFramebuffer.kext from your extensions folder.

use kexthelper to install the gma950 kexts & AppleIntelIntegratedFramebuffer.kext that you took from the 10.5.1 update

then use either a efi string or install natit.kext(by paulicat)

use diskutility to repair permissions

reboot with the -f option

u will now be in leopard with ZERO mouse tearing in firefox and office 2008 and any other program you can think of

one problem i had that i don't know others might run into but for some reason the x3100 kexts were also loading and disabling qe/ci so i just deleted all the 3100 files in my extensions folder.

with this method you will have the ability to select any resolution aswell

Hi mate, thanks for the brilliant guide.

I'm just having one problem and it's to do with installing the Natit. So far I've done everything but I only get one resolution but the tearing is gone. Could you please expand a little on maybe what I should do to install the Natit because everything I've tried doesn't seem to work. ;)

install the natit found here

using kexthelper. then use diskutil to fix permissions and reboot with -f and it SHOULD work

emphasis on should

also i dont know what brand your laptop is. if its a dell i think you need a special natit which i don't know how to find

Bump,

Same here. Using Kalyway 10.5.1. Board is Gigabyte GA-945GCMX-S2 rev 6.6. 2GB DDR2 667Mhz RAM. I tried everything mentioned in this post. Its not working. Also the performance is bad when switching spaces or minimizing applications.

The kext above didn't work for me.

So I downloaded Apple Mac OS X 10.5.1 Update and used Pacifist to extract AppleIntelIntegratedFramebuffer.kext on and used Kext Helper to install. Remember to repair permissions in Disk Utilities too.

It removed the tearing but you do lose graphics performance. For example when you normally open Front Row there is a nice transition to the menu. After applying this kext it sort of comes up suddenly without the transition.

I really hope someone can get find a serious solution to this problem.

Its not actually tearing. Those are artifacts. Its easily reproducible by focusing on any search field using the mouse. The performance is very bad. Many people use this chip and many people are facing this problem. The kext didn't work for me either, By the way Mebster, are you using 10.5.1 or 10.5.2. I have 10.5.1 and haven't yet updated. Does this bug exist in 10.5.2?

i had the same problem, in both 10.5.1 and 10.5.2, and in my case the leopard graphics update screwed the video even more (the blue screen hang during login). using the steps/instructions from the above posters fixed my problem for good (no more problems in pdfs, photoshop - any text areas)...

edmondwck, what's your GMA's device id? mine is 2772. With Leo4All ppf v2 I'm missing the resolutions list at the display section on system preferences and editing boot.plist doesn't solve this as my native resolution isn't supported by it. With the original ISO I got resolution change but sometimes little mouse artifacts. In both cases QE/CI were working OK.
