Grooby97
so I have an old G5 iMac with a fried main board. It's going to cost me $800+ to repair the box so that is not going to happen. I was wondering has anyone successfully mod the box to put an intel board in there somehow and run OSX86? The iMan
why not try to mod it to make it a real intel imac you can find a logic board for around 200 i believe Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/85145-imac-g5-intel-conversion/#findComment-604422 Share on other sites
Soündless
you might be able to do that with a mini or micro atx motherboard, but hooking up the built in lcd could be a challenge Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/85145-imac-g5-intel-conversion/#findComment-604424 Share on other sites
Kane Adams
There is someone thats makes the little things so you can hook up LCD displays but i think I lost the link. I'll see if i can find the place again. I would go with the Mini-itx type boards . apple apple
Sounds great. If this guy could do it with a g3 imac http://homepage.mac.com/andywright153/PhotoAlbum29.html I'm sure you could do it with an emac. Synaesthesia
Wow, quite a challenge, but if you can pull it off at least you can salvage the screen! nano2nd
I would have thought that, in terms of form factor, you'd be better off canibalising a laptop. Not sure how you'd fit regular PC components inside the iMac case. Without even getting to the obvious stuff like PSU, HDD, GFX, you'd find it a challenge to accomodate RAM that rises 1 inch higher than the motherboard. I'd look on ebay for any recent build laptops sold for spares because of a faulty screen. Not sure about how you'd connect the iMac screen though.. dark4181
well, the imac is built with laptop chipsets and stuff anyway, so you'd pretty much HAVE to use laptop components Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/85145-imac-g5-intel-conversion/#findComment-613183 Share on other sites
Colonel
To put it nice and simple. No. Go spend that money on like a new mini or something. Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/85145-imac-g5-intel-conversion/#findComment-613238 Share on other sites
nano2nd
To put it nice and simple. No. Go spend that money on like a new mini or something. With most mod jobs, the question is whether it is about the journey or the destination. The challenge of getting it together often far outweighs the actual benefits of the end result. If you're doing this just to see if you can, the fine, carry on! Otherwise, I agree with the Colonel - you'll make so many compromises in terms of performance, cooling, functionality that you may have been better off getting a Mac Mini - or building a custom Hackintosh. vbetts
I think you could do it, but it would be a {censored} to. You would have to have a mobo that sits in the case like a G5 logic board, if you don't you would need a custom hsf to blow air out of where the Imac G5 case has air holes. As well as the monitor. How would you hook it up? I'm sure that's no ordinary monitor port. The guy with the G3 Imac case did it, but he also used a different screen than the one that came with the G3 case.
