Hello,

I have a dell vostro 1700 with leopard 10.5.2.

I've download the netkas speedstep kernel (on osx86 irc), i've rename it un "speedstep" and I have put it on my mac hard disk drive.

When I start my computer, i write speedstep just before press enter on mac to start it (I am on dualboot).

My computer start and work great, but when I try "sysctl -a | grep freq", it tell me that me :

mac:~ nicolas$ sysctl -a | grep freq

kern.exec: unknown type returned

hw.busfrequency = 800000000

hw.cpufrequency = 2400000000

hw.tbfrequency = 1000000000

hw.tbfrequency: 1000000000

hw.cpufrequency_max: 2400000000

hw.cpufrequency_min: 2400000000

hw.cpufrequency: 2400000000

hw.busfrequency_max: 800000000

hw.busfrequency_min: 800000000

hw.busfrequency: 800000000

mac:~ nicolas$

What can I do to have the speedstep working?

Thanks

Nicolas

Besides speedstep kernel, you need ACPICPUThrottle and Speedstep.app.

Hello everybody,

I have been visiting this forum for the last couple weeks and think it's amazing what you guys have accomplished! It's inspiring to see people so willing to help each other out and share the knowledge that they've attained though hard work and lots and lots of troubleshooting.

I have a XPS m1530 on order and will be making an attempt to jump on board the Leopard bandwagon, but I had one question...is there a step-by-step guide, for dummies, that takes the m1530 through all the stage of creating a dual boot system (vista & leopard).

I have scoured the forum and I know all the information is here, it's just a bit overwhelming trying to take it all in from the various posts. :censored2:

Thanks again everybody...truly amazing work.

EDIT: Actually I think this guide here should work for the m1530, right? http://forum.insanelymac.com/index.php?showtopic=96526

Thanks again!

Hello hello.

My XPS m1330 finally arrived and I wasted no time before trying to put Os X on it (part of the reason I chose this laptop among others).

I'm using iatkos (most recent version) and everything seems to go alright until I restart after the installation. I'm getting a black screen. I'm trying a reinstall now without the added drivers so I hope it'll work.

I had selected the following:

x3100

Intel SATA

NTFS

SpeedStep

Broadcom 44x

Any ideas?

Cheers.

Edit: Did a clean install with no added options. The "blue then black" screen still appears. I tried removing the NVDAR....kext and that didn't change anything. I tried setting the resolution manually. Nothing. When the screen turns blue then black it's just after the grey loading screen and the entire computer seems to go silent. The caps lock light turns on so the system's not hung.

There's nothing helpful in booting with -v as the system hangs once it goes into graphics mode.

Also, is there much of a difference between iatkos and Kalyway? Which is best for my setup? And is there an installation guide that is perhaps more concise? This topic is a bit cluttered now at 57 pages and may be a bit dated.

finally after 1 day, my XPS 1530 is now able to boot via MD button hack :),

I used Leo4allv3 with Darwin 9.2.2 (vanilla), installed Components package: sound works, remote works, 2 fingers scrolling works, battery status indicator works, 8400GS works with resolution 1280*800, Wifi/webcam works, fingerprint reader works,

BUT there's still several minor problems:

1/ Media keys and remote works except the CD eject button, Mute button, Play/stop :D

2/ Bluetooth doesn't work :(,

3/ can't play DVD - error "A valid video device could not be found for playback [-70017]"

4/ I don't know if sleep works properly though, because when the lid is closed I hear a sound & yahoo messenger signs out BUT the power light doesn't flash, cooling fan still running :(

5/ Do I have to install the SpeedStep? (how?)

sorry for my stupid questions, I just started with Hackintosh 2 days ago, it would be helpful if somebody could help me out with the questions above.

TIA

1/ no solution yet :(

2/ same above

3/ Fixed - Installed NVinject, NEW v.41

4/ same 3 :)

5/ don't know :(

New problem: Restart/Shutdown stop working :(

does any1 here have solution for #1 and #2, I really want the bluetooth to work because the internal mic doesn't work, I can't make calls with skype or yahoo :(

PS: my laptop is the XPS 1530

This is great news I'm glad that we are finally getting the vostro linup to work. I just purchased a Vostro 1700 from consumercowboy and will attempt to

use this info to finally have a working version of OSX LEO.

If you looking for a cheap vostro to play around with osx i would suggest the vostro 1500 very cheap right now I think 449 with Core2DUO I found this deal at ConsumerCowboy

I will report my findings ... thanks again

New problem: Restart/Shutdown stop working ^_^

If you delete the Graphics kexts you will have proper shutdown/restart again, it's a know issue.

Microphone Jack appears to work, at least works on M1330.

Perhaps I'm just being daft, but could someone tell me which options I should be selecting under iAtkos 2's "customize" screen as I'm having a hard time understanding the English. For instance, if I select a default kernel, should I not select speedstepping support? To me, the descriptions don't seem clear. I don't know if I'm meant to install Darwin bootloader in addition to the MBR EFI bit. Also, iAtkos seems to mention abilities in Disk Utilities that simply aren't in mine. For instance: Change your partition table type to MBR (msdos type).

How does one change the partition type to MBR?

I'm having problems getting the dual boot to work as well. I've installed Vista first but once I put OS X on the second partition, I get a "missing operating system" message. I've repaired the permissions in Disk Utilities but that doesn't do anything. I've tried following several different guides but none of them seem to produce a good result. I'm trying to use the Darwin boot loader.

how can I delete it? (sorry I'm a noob with mac :( ), if I delete it, would my laptop still able to play DVD and dual monitor still works?

I don't have a microphone to test the mic-jack :(

even the audio is now work, but it sounds a little weird, unlike as vista :(

I used to install Kernel (vanilla) 9.2.2 from leo4allv3, but when I installed the NVinject NEW v.41 it was replaced with the Kernel 9.2.0. I don't know which one is better for my 1530 :moil:

Bluetooth is said by OP work-out-of-box, but I don't know why mine doesn't :(

To delete on GUI open your Disk, then these folders, System, Library, Extensions, then go to NVDAResman.kext and drag to the Trash, the system will ask for you password.

Or you can delete with command line on Terminal, run Terminal from Utilities Folder, once the Terminal window is open write: "sudo rm -fr /System/Library/Extensions/NVDAResman.kext", the system will ask for your password.

The DVD player depends on Quartz Extreme, so if you delete the Graphics kexts you can't loger watch videos, also other programs wont work, Dual monitor wont work, sleep wont work, and turn the display off (sleep display) wont work, but you will have Shutdown/Restart.

Audio is exprimental (read first post).

BT problably require firmware downgrade or boot in Windows first to activate it then boot on Mac, search on the thread for other possible solutions.

Larrybird.

I went through the same labour pains as you :P

To fix Vista boot loader you need to boot from the vista install dvd and choose Repair option. However before you boot of the disc, you may need to disable the "flash module" and set the SATA type to "ATA" and not "AHCI" in the BIOS. Press F2 when the Dell logo shows to enter the bios. Without changing these settings, booting into vista dvd will not see the drive because of driver issues and therefore not try to repair it. You can set these back at a later time as it does not affect windows booting up but do help performance.

As for the OS X installation. I would try Leo4Allv3. It worked best for me. iAtkos gave me lots of grief and I don't think I was able to get to the setup screens with Kalyway at all.

After you install OS X with Leo4All you will probably end up with a "HFS+ Partition Error". There are several "Dual Boot" threads that cover this problem and a quick way out is to "repair" the vista boot loader again and then use the vista bootloader "bcdedit" command to add in an option to boot into the Leopard partition. Thereafter you can get brave and experiment with the Darwin bootloader options etc.

Finally, persistence is the key. I trashed and corrupted my partitions so many times but still persued with my M1330 for about 3 weeks and in that time I must say I have learnt so much and particularly from searching through the guides on this website. I owe a lot to the everyone on this forum. Someone somewhere will usually have a solution. :D I am just waiting on a response to see why my DVD drive is not being recognised as thats the last thing (apart from the known issues) that is bugging me.

alright, I got my XPS m1530 running with OS X. can someone point me in the right direction on how to set up NVinject AND keep sleep working, thanks in advance.

1/ install the Components package in this package I chose: sigmatel 9228 (sound works), media keys enabler (works but a few buttons don't), sleep for XPS/lid sleep (not working), 2 finger scrolling for XPS 1530 (works)

2/ install USBEHCI Updater (sleep still doesn't work) I don't know what it exactly does, but it doesn't harm your laptop

3/ install NVinject, NEW v.41 choose: newest framework, nvinjectgo for laptop graphic, and Kernel to fix sleep/shutdown. Result: Restart/shutdown is now not working :P , Sleep/lid sleep work perfectly, fix display resolution, fix DVD playing error, if you wanna get dual monitor see macgirl post http://forum.insanelymac.com/index.php?s=&...st&p=668520

4/ hack MD button to dual boot leopard/vista (http://forum.insanelymac.com/index.php?showtopic=102227)

all package can be found here http://forum.insanelymac.com/index.php?showtopic=83039

well, I guess I won't delete NVDAResman.kext :D, wait for better solution, now, I just hold the power button to shutdown :P

Thank you macgirl :P

Dell Truemobile 355 Bluetooth works fine out of box. Didn't need to downgrade firmware or boot in Windows at all.

I control it with the switch on the right side. It is off mostly, when I set it to on, it is automatically detected by system. You can't disable it through software, have to use the switch to disable.

Cheers mate!

I wonder how comparable our systems are. I've not followed any OSX86 developments for over a year as my previous laptop was too out-dated. My new one, however, is perfect for it! I'd just like to know what kind of success you've had and what problems you've encountered. I'm going to take your advice and try the Leo4All. It's a bit confusing with so many different versions of the installer knocking about. I wish there was Leopard installation guide to walk us Dell users through the process. As helpful as this topic is, it's a bit cluttered and sometimes hard to follow, especially since I've not followed it from the beginning.

np. I need to update my sig so that I detail my laptop spec and what is working.

My M1330 setup / experiences

I have the Dell M1330 with T8300 dual core 2.4Ghz processor, 3Gb Ram, 320Gb hdd. I had Vista pre-installed and managed to trash that partition. I now have 5 partitions.

The first 2Gb FAT partition is the Dell utilities which I never trashed. I then have a 50Gb Vista NTFS partition and 30Gb HFS OS X partition. I then have another NTFS partition for Docs and a final FAT partition to share data across the 2 OS's.

Initially I re-installed Vista and got that up and running with everything working as I needed my laptop functioning for work. I then installed Leo4All (after trying the others) and that resulted in the HFS+ Partition Error. (Btw I used the vanilla kernel and patched things afterwards).

After repairing with Vista DVD (don't forget the bios settings), I could only boot into Leopard until I added the other partition into the bootlaoder using the bcdedit command.

http://forum.insanelymac.com/index.php?showtopic=39253

Now when I choose Mac OS X it takes me to Darwin BootLoader and I have to select my partition with Leopard on it from there.

With regards to whats working; graphics worked using NVInstallerv.41. I tried the Netkas kernel to fix the shutdown/restart problem but it didn't work. So I reverted back. Its up to you to try it but I reckon it doesn't work on this laptop. I also used a gfx string MacGirl used (see first page) and got dual screen working with external monitor. For sound I used the AppleHDA patched version (again linked on first page) but some issues below. For Battery meter I think I installed the componet from Sonotones component package. I didn't bother with two finger scrolling because when I originally tried that it messed up the trackpad settings and was a pain to reverse.

There is a link to a "DellUKKeyboard" layout somewhere to correct the @ and " keys. I also used the "Modifier Keys" option in the Keyboard preferences to re-map the CTRL, ALT and the COMMAND keys to how I am used to with windows. I also downloaded an excellent util called "DoubleCommand" which allowed me to use my HOME and END keys. With the trackpad, I am used to tapping the trackpad to initiate a click event. In MAC OS this is disabled by default but you can enable it in the mouse / trackpad preferences. Fingerprint scanner software linked on the first page also works perfectly (if you have that).

For the wi-fi, I had the Intel 4965N card but I ebayed and got the Dell 1490 for under £20. This is recognised as an Airport device. There are Beta drivers now available for the intel card I have but they are still in development but is only recognised as an ethernet device. With this laptop there were 2 mini PCI slots under the flap so I simply moved the intel card to the other slot and connected the additional WWAN antenna cables to it. In Vista I can see both cards now but have disabled one of them to save battery power!

Camera and bluetooth were working straight away.

Problems, nuances:

  • Sound cannot be muted plus if I put headphones in, I still hear sound through the speakers too. :-( May be fixed with new sound drivers later.
  • Shutdown / Restart problem (known issue caused by the graphics driver)
  • DVD drive not recognised. Have not done too much to work this one out yet as its not that urgent yet.

Apart from that I am very pleased with the setup. It boots faster than Vista, seems to last longer on the battery and I can run my Cisco VPN client and remote desktop software to do my work stuff from it too! I am going to experiment with the "Media Direct" boot method but have ghosted my partition so if I screw anything up I can restore it :-)

Hope this helps you in anyway but there are far more experienced people here who could probably answer your questions way better.

Upon the receipt of my notebook from Dell, the Bluetooth while being recognized by the pre loader, was not detected by any OS, including Vista, Leo, Red Hat, however the BT light indicator worked as it is dictated by the BIOS. Since I have installed the Vista Ultimate as a replacement of the original Vista Home Premium, Dell would not support this issue claiming software incompatibility, so I've reinstalled the Dell's original Vista, needless to say the BT remained unresponsive so Dell unleashed an overnight tech to install the new 355 module which meant that I had to KILL Leo, :hysterical: so I did what I ought to have done to begin with, opened up the notebook to find the BT cable barely connected to the board, :censored2: after properly connecting it, voila enter the Bluetooth, fully and instantly recognized by both OS's. All ADD ON components are configured post install in the USA  , so BT was added after the original base system was compiled in China, perhaps there is a pattern here and your BT is also "not quite" connected, either way it is worth a shot.

Just a side note, no BIOS modification is necessary to repair the Vista boot loader, just activate the Vista partition prior to repairing it. Enter the CMD and type in DISKPART, SELECT DISK 0, SELECT PARTITION 1, ACTIVE. Use the LIST PARTITION command to establish the correct enumerator values for your system. Few guides mention it but this issue is caused by most OSX Distros deactivating the primary Vista partiton, Leo4allv3 does not do that so it causes no such issues. Also, I have personallly not seen any evidence that the flash module does anything detrimental to the OSX installation. On the XPS M1530, no BIOS change to install any of the Leopard Distros is truly necessary; I have succeded with all the latest Leo Distros (iATKOS 2.0i, Kalyway 10.5.2, Leo4all3, JaS 10.5.2) using default BIOS settings.

Update: I have replaced the MBR on my notebook with the GUID partition table with Leo in the first partition and Vista in the second. So far I have observed faster load times for Leo, much quicker Verify/Repair Disk/Permissions using Disk Utility; Apple's own software integration appears to be more fluid and stable under the GPT. The Media Direct hack sadly does not work as it relies on the msdos MBR. Although I do realize that few if any use the MD under the GPT implementation, I would greatly appreciate any related input/discussion.
