macgirl
Some M1530 do indeed have the crummy 128MB 8400M, I do believe that the base model still has that as a stock option as it is an XPS in name only. Query: MacGirl, the Bluetooth in my notebook that thus far has not been operational, now is. After having spent hours upon hours messing with the software, I finally opened it to find the wire loose! It was only slightly so, apparently enough for the BIOS to detect it, but not quiet enough for the OS, bizarre, Dell Tech Support is in complete denial of this possibility! In any case, it is only functional if the Vista boot precedes that of Leo. Is it somehow activated by that cursed excuse for an OS? It could be also possibly due to the Media Direct 3.5 serving as a Leo activator, perhaps the same BIOS startup protocols are not being run via that particular boot method. Any ideas? While at it, my new 1505 TrueMobile while being recognized as a AirPort Extreme, does not automatically connect to a preset home wireless network but has to be manually set to do so. Where is my error, MacGirl? Please advise. V. Oh, sorry, everytime I visit the Dell pages of M1530 configuration showed the 8600 and never the 8400 good to know and that I have a "crummy 128MB 8400M" On the bluetooth issue, I know that some have this issue on the 1530, maybe is a firmware thing, I also eperienced this with a Microsoft Dongle, I need to boot first with any Windows OS in order to Mac OS recognized it. I think that I read somewhere that the lastest firmare for the bluetood made this, and it is because you can use BT devices even if the drivers aren't loaded. let me see if I can find the post/site/blog. Don't know about the automatic connection issue, sometimes I suffer the same even on my PowerBook.

Anjan Tek
Hey! I just got my new XPS 1530. In my region, there is no option to get a Dell TrueMobile wireless card along with the system. So, I had to settle for the Intel 4965. Since the Dell TrueMobile cards are not available here, I need to get an alternative compatible card. Could someone tell me some alternative Wireless Mini PCIe card compatible with Leo? Also, my 1530 has the Marvell Yukon ethernet. Are there any drivers available for that? Thanks. DarwinX
Oh, sorry, everytime I visit the Dell pages of M1530 configuration showed the 8600 and never the 8400 good to know and :angry2: that I have a "crummy 128MB 8400M" On the bluetooth issue, I know that some have this issue on the 1530, maybe is a firmware thing, I also eperienced this with a Microsoft Dongle, I need to boot first with any Windows OS in order to Mac OS recognized it. Don't know about the automatic connection issue, sometimes I suffer the same even on my PowerBook. Pardon moi, my own very first M1530 have had that very same card, it is an excellent base card, beats the hell out of that integrated Intel shi I am now burning the new iATKOS 2.0i which was finally released yesterday, pulled it by a means of torrent overnight. I will be installing it shortly on one of my M1530 partitions, the results shall be forthcoming. Update: the PCWiz restart/backup utilities as expected do not do jack, it is now a well known fact, I just had to try it though! Milestone: IWIDarwin Google project has yesterday officially released the first ever Intel 4965AGN WLAN beta kext! It is a dmg based installer which can be found on the appropriate Google page. I am currently testing it on my M1530, thus far the prognosis is quite grim, as expected. Beware, as this is still a highly experimental beta, crashes are possible, in which case the kext can be easily removed via the single user mode (-s) or from another OSX partition so preferably have it installed on a spare OSX partition or at least have a spare installation available with enough back up space as those partitions sadly can NOT be extended, MacGirl, correct me if I'm wrong on this. Now, GUID (GPT) vs MBR, any serious differences among those two? I would love to attempt a dual Vista/Leo GPT installation with the new iATKOS 2.0i, any recommendations? yeye
intel cards are not yet working on OS X yet! It's as you say a beta project and only tests can be made, you can't go on the Internet If you want a dual boot with Vista and Leo, without using dell media direct button, it's very easy if you use vista boot loader. If you're interested and don't find on the forum how to do that, I'll explain to you but it's very easy! Does iaktos 2.0i allow you to restart/shutdown (assuming that you installed nvidia kexts)? Lenka-Penka
Now, GUID (GPT) vs MBR, any serious differences among those two? I would love to attempt a dual Vista/Leo GPT installation with the new iATKOS 2.0i, any recommendations? If you switch to GUID, you would no longer be able to use MD button, I think. But maybe it will be ok. I've installed today on external drive iAtkos 2.0, it seems to be working ok. I selected AppleAcpiPlatform.kext, netkas SMBIOS, nVidia drivers with NVInject, Intel Speedstep and Broadcom 440 driver. Thus far everything is working fine, time machine transfer was impeccable. What I noticed is that my laptop runs a bit cooler than in my previous installation. I can't check if the speedstep is working, since Hardware Monitor application is not working on my laptop - it doesn't display CPU frequency and its temperature. Anyone managed to run HW Monitor on Dells? UPDATE: As expected, shutdown is not working too. Didn't try restart but I think that it will be the same. More update: Speedstep application is working fine! (at least, now) Another update: Although Speedstep is working, I can't sleep any longer, so the incompatibility issue remains

This entire concept was Lenka-Penka's stroke of genius, he is yet to tell me how he managed to figure this one out.The restart/shutdown, as expected, is still non operational. If you switch to GUID, you would no longer be able to use MD button, I think. I would really LOVE to keep that MD button, does the GUID really improve OSx performance by a major margin, if so in which way exactly? Which AppleACPIPlatform version do you have? I have nagged an extra 8 cell battery out of Dell so power is no longer an issue for me, however even with the 45 nm processor, Leo ravages through the battery as an actual Leopard would through a fat and tasty gringo unfortunate enough to run out of bullets during a routine animal slaughter/safari in some remote African savanna. madness. Yes you can boot from another partition or from another Disk, even an USB disk with Mac OS. You cannot expand HFS partition on MBR disk but you can on GUID or Apple Partition Scheme with Disk Utility, on MBR Disk you can "increase" the partition by a trick of joining two Mac Partitions with Disk Utility but by command line, There is also a program called iPartition tah can Increase the Mac partition size on MBR disk (and other scheme of course), but if you dont have another Disk with Mac OS you cant use its CD (that it is bootable) on Hackintoshes, if you have a real Mac you can attach your Disk there and use iPartition CD tho. Another update:Although Speedstep is working, I can't sleep any longer, so the incompatibility issue remains This is a very known issue on hackintoshes, if you use SpeedStep kernel you loose the sleep ability. Chrysaor
Aside from MD button, I would stick with MBR just for support reasons, there are bazillions of utilities out there that can manipulate MBR partition scheme, but only maybe a few for GUID. I really doubt there will by any noticeable performance increase. Also, you can't run XP with GUID as far as I know, that would be deal-breaker for me, but if you are running Vista, you can give it a try and tell us how it works. yeye
Hi, I'd like to confirm you that sometimes, I'm able to have a 4h battery life instead of 2h/2h30. I have no idea what can cause this longer battery life but maybe it's because in vista I set my laptop in "long battery life" (I don't know the name in english but it's the mode to have the longer battery life). Does it work for you? I've noticed that when I've a long battery life, laptop is very long to charge! almost 3h to have a full charge (starting from 1%) edit: my laptop is still very hot but nobody answers me about his! How did you got it to work? with speedstep kernel? With vanilla kernel it just shows blank for me. edit: nm, it works after restart. shows all the steppings and voltages, but settings are greyed out without license. fizwax
Hello All, Firstly I would like to thank MacGirl for the wonderful guide. I have a Dell M1330 and almost everything is working sweet and I owe it to you. I bought the Dell 4950 wi-fi card because I wanted the true Airport functionality. It works great. Shutdown/restart is a problem but sound, video, camera, bluetooth are all fine. However, today I wanted to watch a dvd but realised that my dvd drive is not detected. Looking in system preferences it does not show any ATA devices at all. I tried to search the threads to see if this was a common problem but seems everyones compatibility tests include all hardware except checking to see the ATA devices work! Just wondering if its just my config that has an issue or if everyone has the same problem... Fiz
kotori
finally after 1 day, my XPS 1530 is now able to boot via MD button hack , I used Leo4allv3 with Darwin 9.2.2 (vanilla), installed Components package: sound works, remote works, 2 fingers scrolling works, battery status indicator works, 8400GS works with resolution 1280*800, Wifi/webcam works, fingerprint reader works, BUT there's still several minor problems: 1/ Media keys and remote works except the CD eject button, Mute button, Play/stop 2/ Bluetooth doesn't work , 3/ can't play DVD - error "A valid video device could not be found for playback [-70017]" 4/ I don't know if sleep works properly though, because when the lid is closed I hear a sound & yahoo messenger signs out BUT the power light doesn't flash, cooling fan still running 5/ Do I have to install the SpeedStep? (how?) sorry for my stupid questions, I just started with Hackintosh 2 days ago, it would be helpful if somebody could help me out with the questions above.
