Yesterday I got my XPS M1330 to boot Leapord no problem using iaktos r2 and the Gparted flag trick.

For those still looking for exactly what to hit in the installer menu...only Darwin EFI. Leave the drivers and patches alone, the M1330 will just crash if you try anything else.

After a bit of playing I got sound out of the speakers and the video drivers installed for a lovely bit of 1200 x 800 resolution.

The only downside is that I can't get wirelss or ethernet. The annoying thing is my dad has a Dell Truemobile card in his inspiron but won't let me switch it for mine.

Although I did have a quick look at my specs today, I have a Broadcom network adapter and an intel 3495ABG wifi card.

Shouldn't the broadcom network adapter work out of the box? Also can I get a driver for the 3495 ABG or should I be taken out and shot for asking a n00b question again?

I'm back on Vista but it would be nice to get a stable set up working, I'm emmigrating soon and can't take the risk to convert fully just yet.

The integrated Ethernet on XPS is a Broadcom 5906m, there are driver for some 57xx, but I tried all tricks and mods and no luck.

Is it not possible that the reason why sleep shutdown and reboot dont work is because of an nvcap value or does external displays work with the efi string?

My string gives me ability to attach an external display and it works, the only thing that does not work is "Mirror display".

I didn't test with another NVCAP value, you can install NVinject and change it ther, is easier/faster than generate new strings.

I really wish my scrolling worked on the touchpad, anyway to fix it? Also, people have enabled two-finger scrolling (like real mac trackpads) on ANY synaptics trackpads in ubuntu\linux, which the m1330 has, if im not mistaken. Anyway to hack it to work in OSX86 or windows?

iATKOS v1.0i Leopard installer notes for Dell XPS M1530

2.2GHz Core2Duo, 2GB RAM

60GB SATA drive

Single MBR partition (Leopard only)

NVidia 8400M GS video

Marvell Yukon ethernet

Dell 1490 wireless (Broadcom)

2MP webcam

TEAC DVD/RW

Before installing Leopard, I installed JAS 10.4.8 Tiger (clean) to freshly-formatted internal SATA drive

Then booted iATKOS DVD (no boot options)

Opened up Utilities -> Terminal

At the bash prompt, typed the following commands:

cd /Volumes

cd Tiger (the name of my SATA drive partition)

rm -R * (recursively removes every file in every subdirectory)

This cleaned out the cruft from JAS Tiger installation to avoid the launchd infinite loop problem.

Next, I ran Utilities -> Darwin_Boot from the iATKOS menu

Entered 1, then 1 again for the first partition on the first HD (boot drive called Tiger)

Typed “Y” to OK installation of EFI bootloader

Closed Darwin_Boot utility.

Started iATKOS installer

Clicked “Custom” button and added the following options:

EFI -> Stock kernel

NV-inject -> 128MB

SMBIOS.kext

ext2 kext

Marvell Yukon drivers

Broadcomm 440 drivers

Ran the iATKOS installer

10 minutes later the XPS rebooted

The XPS M1530 booted Apple logo displayed; but OS X stopped after about 30 seconds with this error:

“You need to restart your computer.”

Rebooted by holding down the power button for a few seconds.

At Darwin boot prompt, added “-s” (single user) option

Darwin booted up in single-user mode

after Darwin finished loading, at prompt, typed:

/sbin/mount -uw /

cd /System/Library/Extensions

mv NVDAResman.kext NVDAResman.kext_BU

(Renamed the Nvidia drivers to keep them from loading. _BU doesn't mean anything, it just keeps the loader from finding the .kext)

Rebooted the XPS M1530.

Saw the Apple logo, and 30 seconds later, the Finder was loaded and working.

Success!

===============

Post Installation Notes:

Working: Wireless, webcam, battery meter, Quartz extreme, volume control buttons

Not Working: HDA internal sound, sleep, power down, Yukon ethernet, media transport controls

Audio works perfectly with USB Sound Blaster MP3+ external sound device

iLife '06 installed and everything is working. A few weird problems with video refresh in GarageBand and elsewhere. Might be a driver quirk; but it's not a show stopper.

Thanks again to everyone. I hope these notes are helpful to you.

Hi all. Quick question: If I install netkas's new 9.2.0 kernel, will I lose the ability to use apple update, seeing as how that kernel isnt vanilla?

You should still be able to update, they use the source from the original kernel so its completely compatible

Great, so how do I do it? Is it as simple as copying over the old kernel and repairing permissions? I'm new to this so if you know, or could direct me, to the terminal commands, I'd greatly appreciate it.

Ok, i figured it out. Now a new batch of questions: What is speedstep.app and do I need it for speedstep to work? Also, with all these problems people (including myself) are having with getting the power meter to show up, is it possible that the machine needs to be identified as a macbook instead of a macpro (using macnub's latest smbios)?

Who else has a blue tint on their XPS m1530 or m1330? Any solutions.. A colorsync profile for this screen perhaps...?

Did you try to calibrate or use another profile ? BTW to use another profile you need to uncheck the "Show profiles for this display only".

I normaly use the AdobeRGB(1998) profile.

Hi all. Quick question: If I install netkas's new 9.2.0 kernel, will I lose the ability to use apple update, seeing as how that kernel isnt vanilla?

You can use that kernel and use Software update, just a war if a new system update is released the kernel will be replaced, but Applications updates will be ok.

Started iATKOS installer

Clicked “Custom” button and added the following options:

NV-inject -> 128MB

The XPS M1530 booted Apple logo displayed; but OS X stopped after about 30 seconds with this error:

“You need to restart your computer.”

That is beacause 10.5-10.5.1 Nvidia kexts does not work with 8x00 cards, as you already notice, maybe when iATKOS or kalyway include the new 10.5.2 kexts could be a straight forward installation.

The broadcom 440 drivers are for an old card, XPS has new Broadcom and 59xx, I haven't seen a Yukon card on a Laptop yet.

i'm using your boot.plist.. how to enable the second display?.. if i click on "detect display" the laptop monitor be black and anything on the other monitor

Yes I can make detect displays, change resolutions and change which monitor is the "Main", only "Mirror displays" does not work.

I have a Vostro 1500. After the complete upgrade to 10.5.2 (everything working fine!), the ethernet card doesn't work! Even if i connect the cable and set everything it says "disconnected" in network properties.

After restoring the IONetworkingFamily.kext (or something) from 10.5.1 kalyway it worked fine again - did it happen to anyone ?? My ethernet tends to drop every once in a while, and hoped the 10.5.2 could help with the problem.. do you know of any solution?

Found Bluetooth & iDisk problems

Hi all.

Macgirl, have you successfully used your Bluetooth and iDisk (.MAC)?

After settling in on my new machine (M1330 w/ 10.5.2) I've been finding little issues here and there.

The two issues that baffle me are:

1. Bluetooth problems

Before I configured the Bluetooth to pair up with my G3 Moto q9, the Bluetooth would always remain turned on after a shutdown or reboot cycle.

After successfully configuring bluetooth tethering between the GSM phone and my machine so as to have IP connectivity when I don't have a WiFi to connect to, my bluetooth turns itself off after any power related action (Shutdown, Reboot, Sleep).

The option to turn it back remains grayed out and the only way to turn it back on is to erase the paired device and start over again.

I haven't paired any other device (don't have one) to compare if it is only related to this type of device and service or if it is a general issue.

So far I can't figure it out, nor have found references to this problem.

Just in case this is the Log from my console after trying to sleep the unit (as an example):

Feb 19 01:27:38 xps-m1330 kernel[0]: System Sleep

Feb 19 01:27:39 xps-m1330 kernel[0]: System Wake

Feb 19 01:27:39 xps-m1330 kernel[0]: USB caused wake event (EHCI)

Feb 19 01:27:39 xps-m1330 kernel[0]: [interruptReadHandler] Received kIODeviceNotResponding error - retrying: 1.

Feb 19 01:27:42 xps-m1330 kernel[0]: AirPort: Link Up on en1

2. iDisk Problems

I have a MacBook Pro and a Mac Pro Quad Tower besides my Dell M1330. On the authentic Macs I have no problems accessing iDisk from my .MAC account.

On the other hand, when I try from my Dell with 10.5.2 vanilla, I get an error code -50 "Your iDisk cannot be accessed. Your member name or password may be invalid".

Any insight?

Thanks,

JFA

Yup they are marvell cards the exact model on my m1530 is 88E8040. I'll just wait out for new kexts. :D

Looked up on Vista's device manager, the Hardware IDs section are listed as this for the 88E8040 model:

PCI\VEN_11AB&DEV_4354&SUBSYS_022E1028&REV_12

I got two-finger scrolling to work on my m1330!

macgirl, you should add this to your guide, or link this post, since its kind of long. :D

Just a quick question Macgirl - the USB->ethernet adapter you mention (the Apple branded one).... have you got this working on your M1330?

Was just looking at the reviews for it, and someone claims it *only* works on the macbook air (find it hard to believe). Just wondering if anyone has it working on the m1330 before I buy one.

thanks

"Edit 1: It looks like FFScrollDaemon DOES NOT load with OS X. So you can manually start it with "sudo /usr/local/bin/FFScrollDaemon" within terminal or browse to that dir and double click it."

Does OS X not have /etc/rc.d/rc.local or equivalent? You must be able to hook it into one of the bootup scripts somewhere?

I do not have it on my M1330, but plan to have it soon, I have a Linksys that uses Apple kexts, anyway that "someone" who is XPS400 and claimed that the adapters didn't work reported later on post #141 that they now work after the 10.5.2 update, and I believe that is because it has a new kext that is called AppleUSBGigEthernet, 10.5 came with AppleUSBEthernet.kext only

Has anyone gotten SpeedStep to work using the 9.2.0 kernel and 10.5.2? I've got the speedstep package all installed and can change the settings of speedstep.app, but according to sysctl -a | grep cpu its not doing {censored}. I did finally get the battery icon to show up using the powermanagement bundle from the speedstep package.

Works here, just followed the steps of the guide, when its working you should see something like:

kern.cputhrottle_curfreq: 800

kern.cputhrottle_verbose: 1

kern.cputhrottle_freqs: 800 1200 1600 2000 2001

when you do sysctl -a | grep cpu, is the speedstep.app actually doing anything? also which kernel are you using mine is:

[rid@Hackintosh:~]$ uname -a

Darwin Hackintosh 9.2.0 Darwin Kernel Version 9.2.0: Thu Feb 14 17:30:26 SCT 2008; made by ToH:xnu-1228/BUILD/obj/RELEASE_I386 i386
