Michael Gat
ok, some computer specs first: amd athalon 64 3200+ with hyper transport (sse3) 768mb of ram 40gb ata HD 52x32x52 16x dvd/cd drive it has no operating system, the harddrive if formatted as fat32 so what I did, I put in the install dvd(10.4.4 patched). I hit a random key because it said to hit any key to boot from cd, I waited. I selected english as the main language I hit continue I selected the harddrive as the destination I hit continue. (I think) It did its installing thing which took quite awhile. I go to work on US government classwork. I come back to find it saying "there were errors installing the software""please try installing again" I check the error log and it shows the following at the bottom (set to show errors only): BomFatalError - cpio read error: bad file format Install failed: Some files for esponprinterdrivers may not have been written correctly. I dont know how to adress this error. I am currently trying to install again. does anyone know, what to do about this error? Never saw that before, the closest thing to it is the BOMB error on an Atari ST. No kidding, it seems that your disk is bad. Have it check before you do the install. Michael Gat
the harddrive worked before I wiped windows xp off of it (1-2days ago depending on where you live) Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/81481-bomfatalerror-question/#findComment-578188 Share on other sites
Michael Gat
ok so I tried reinstalling. a number of things were interesting. first that when installing this time the ammount of space the isntaller said it needed was different by a large ammount. the first time I tried installing, the ammount needed was 5.9gb, the second time I tried it said it needed 2.1gb BUT it said that there was 3.1gb of data on the harddrive already. so I went ahead with the installation and got the same error. so I decided to try and boot whatever was in that 3.1gb of data the installer put on the HD the first time. I get this annoying b0 error which I fix by loading a linux live cd I found with some partition stuff on it so I could mark the partition as a boot partition. I restart without the livecd in there and it starts to boot the grey screen with they greyer apply symbol in the middle and the little spinny circle thing half way between the apple in the middle and the bottom of the screen. then near the top of the apple a white square with a symbol in it pops up. the symbol is basically an O with line from the top left corner of the O to the bottom right. the little circle spinny thing is still going but it just hangs on this screen forever. Try booting in verbose mode (Hit a key when prompted and then type -v at the prompt) to see what errors are occuring. The symptoms you cite are often seen when the HDD is not recognised by the OS: you'll see something along the lines of "still waiting for root" if that's the problem. But it might well be other issues. When you think you see the error, do a forum wide search for info on that error. It's probable that others have had it and there's a fix or at least a workaround. Michael Gat
just to say: the way I fixed this error (yay I finally got it) was to have it not install printer drivers (in the customize section when at the installation type stage).
