Numberzz
Besides China, Australia is now the 2nd country to filter out pornography and violence sites. The Australian government is now requiring ISPs to filter out the so called "smutty" material. When the user goes to these sites, they will most certainly be met with a block. The users can opt out in and decline to let their internet be filtered, but imagine the look on parents faces when they see that their 14 year old son has just enabled the porn to flow in. No more porn for Kiko! Didn't really know what to put here, so here is a map of Australia Full Story(Video)

Mebster
I'm not too sure how successfully they're going to filter porn sites out and not sites with some porn (eg, torrentspy). I know there were plans to have a .xxx but don't think that's come about yet. Although I like the general idea, but I think it would have been better to have an 'opt in' than 'opt out'. Or one where when you sign up broadband with your ISP they actually ask you what you would like then and there. That way Kiko wouldn't need to be embarrassed when he gets caught out ringing the phone operator and pretending to be his mum wanting to get the porn flowing again. Sorry Kiko, no more Hoff for you. EDIT: Numberzz, I'm guessing you're jumping with joy that you don't live in Australia right now

eLMafUDd
LOL at the above post. Sucks to be aussie. Can't see this happening without a lot of opposition though. First inappropriate websites, next it will be pirated material Then who knows...

InorganicMatter
Wasn't there a story about this being a client-side software filter that could be disabled in less than 30 seconds? When will the world learn that software filters on the internet browsing machine don't work?
mactwister
Ye i suppose this block is for direct block, but wat about pop-ups. or adverts on site, like crack website, so many porn ads. Or yeah pirating website sharing porn. There is always a way. you can never really block something.
A Nonny Moose
What I'm wondering is what the government is going to term "pornographic." It just feels like this has the capability to become a gigantic witch hunt.
GBK.Xscape
OK guys, now this is where the Insanelymac community comes together. We all must get together and ship him weekly regiments of porn to keep him going until he is 18 so then he can move somewhere else and get the porn flowing again. Who is down with me? johnniecarcinogen
The whole concept of government taking care of you, whether it be they educate you, give you health care, make sure you wear your seat belt... This is what happens, you lose other liberties. But hey, they're looking out for you and the children right? Without any competition on blocking porn I hope the govenment blacklist doesn't make many mistakes. If an ISP did this, you could simply switch to another with a free market. I hope you guys like your new prime minister who promised government would give you more, not that I liked your last one either.
NatMusak
I agree with Mebster. These frivolous filters are a waste of time b/c there's always a crack/workaround. And what about the pornographic ads plastering different sites? I wish they'd demand these porn sites/advertisers to adopt a .xxx or similar designation, with any not willing to do so being shut down or fined. To the post above, johniecarcinoge, I have trouble with the government getting in my business, illegally spying on me as if I'm some terrorist, but I also believe the government needs to work for me if it's gonna take so much of my paycheck. One thing that's good about a national law is that it provides a standard. Leave an issue like this up to the states if it were in the U.S. and it would be different everywhere. I'm not saying all or even most of the standards they set are good, but something like a .xxx designation for porn, which is a grotesque, low-life industry enjoyed by under-age adolescents and groddy old men, sometimes linked to heinous child sex-trafficking, would be appropriate in my opinion. MacApprentice
The "funny" thing is, the first step while establishing a totalitarist regime, is to ban porn and anything judged "bad" for the people by the governement. It already appened in the past you know... Humans will never learn...
