Guys, just a quick question... I've been thinking about picking up a set of Logitech z5500's recently and I just want to know if I'll be able to get 5.1 surround via the optical/coaxial digital outs on the DS4? I've searched high and low (which isn't easy on this site - even using Google) and I can't seem to find a definitive answer. Will I just be limited to 2 channels or will I get 5.1 digital out? If so, what kexts/patches/whatever will I need to get it working?

My apologies if this has been answered before, but I just can't find it here (and I'm about to tear my hair out in frustration)... I'd like to find out before I hand over my precious $300!

Thanks in advance! :D

So nobody knows? I don't mean to seem impatient, but I was hoping to grab these speakers over the weekend. If I can only get 2 channels though, there isn't much point. Surely someone else here has tried a 5.1 setup....

5.1 audio should work via optical out. Also read http://forum.insanelymac.com/index.php?showtopic=69627

Interesting link... Thanks!

I'd just like to clarify what you mean when you say 5.1 works. Do you mean that it works with the EFI Studio EFI strings (which I'm currently using)? Or do I have to install the Cmedia 8738 kexts suggested in that thread? At the moment, when I select "Built-in Digital Output" in the Audio Midi Setup utility, I only get an option for 2 channels - does that change when you hook it up to 5.1 digital speakers?

Also, if I do have to install the Cmedia kexts, I assume I'd have to delete the EFI strings from my boot.plist, then install the Cmedia kexts, and then run EFI studio again, this time only installing video and ethernet.... right?

Sorry for all the questions. I just don't want to muck up a working install if I don't have to... Thanks again for all your help! You've certainly made life a whole lot easier for all us DS4 users!

EDIT: Forget all that. I just lugged my computer over to my neighbours house (he has a digital 5.1 setup) and tested it using the EFI strings and I can confirm that 5.1 Digital Out does work (once you get all the settings right it Sys Prefs and DVD Player prefs). However, you cannot control the volume on digital out via the keyboard or the OS. You have to do it via the speakers/receiver. Is there any way around this? As usual, I've had a search but haven't found any definite answers.

I'm no Mac expert but I do know about music outputs. I'd be very surprised if you could adjust an optical output from the keyboard or OS. An optical output is designed to be pugged into an AMP. Think of a DVD player with Optical Out. The volume is changed on the amp rather than the DVD player.

Hi.

I am trying to install Leopard with this method. I have the Retail DVD installed in an external USB drive. I boot from it and do the pre-patch thing. The problem comes when I start the installation (open OSXInstall.mpkg) of OSX to install it in the internal hard disk: it doesn't let me choose the destination! When I click the button "Choose installation destination" (I don't know the exact translation in English, it's in Spanish), it takes me to the license page.

I tried with Kalyway 10.5.2 and iATKOS v4i, and same thing happens.

Thanks! I was starting to come to that conclusion - just wasn't too sure. It'd be interesting to know how it behaves on a real Mac (or a PC for that matter). Unfortunately, I've only got a MacBook Pro (and I don't have windows installed on my PC), so I can't check ;)

hi guys am planning on getting this board now the alc 889a audio chip onboard, do you get full 5.1 in mac? no one seems to mention or maybe i just missed it thanx.

That's precisely what we've been discussing in the last few posts... LOL

Essentially, you can get 5.1 either by combining the three analogue 2-channel outputs into a 5.1 aggregate device (see: http://forum.insanelymac.com/index.php?showtopic=87336) or you can connect by digital out SPDIF and get your reciever/speakers to decode the passed-through DTS/Dolby 5.1 encoded audio (or split a stereo signal to all 6 of your speakers, if your system is capable of doing this).

Im getting an extremely irritating crackling sound in my speakers when watching movies, which occurs at random intervals. I first applied the EFI string and later the R1000 kext for sound, but the scratching sound is still there.

Im using the EP35-DS4.

And also 1080p movies play really slugishly. My machine should have enough power -> E8200 @ 3.6 GHz, 2 GB ram. Could it be that I need more RAM?

On another line...

What sort of CPU temperature programs are people out there using with their osx86? I tried Hardware Monitor, but that only shows HD temps and fails to see CPU core temps. Something similar to Real Temp on windows would be good.

Thanks.

Try using Chameleon. Some people reported problems with 45nm CPUs and PC-EFI. karaakeha1 hinted this might be a problem with incorrect bus speeds/rtc readings from PC-EFI. I didn't have any problems playing one 1080p and one 720p video at the same time with the Q9450 on 3.2 GHz.

Hey thanks for the tip. Chameleon fixed my problems. Thankfully there is no more crackling sound when watching movies...

The only minor issue I have is that when I shutdown for the first time i get a kernel panic but after that shutdown works 50% of the time. Im using the shutdown fix that ls8 mentions. Maybe it has something to do with the BIOS versions.

Where did you find BIOS F4d? ....Im only seeing F1, F2, F3, F5

http://www.gigabyte.com.tw/Support/Motherb...?ProductID=2744

Also noticed in System Profiler that my display doesn't support Quartz Extreme ... this is probably why the videos are so sluggish, correct? And also the reason why VLC will constantly crash.

And another thing...Im only getting a Xbench score of 165.... is it b/c of my my video card+monitor?

Yes. You should be able to get QE/CI working on that card. Use EFIStudio to create EFI strings (works for sound & Ethernet too) http://forum.netkas.org/index.php/topic,64...64.html#msg1864 or use johnnycarinogen NVinstaller http://scottdangel.com/blog/?page_id=20

I have added EFI strings for network and audio, but the 7300 GS 256MB is not listed in either the EFI Studio or Johnny's installer. So Im using Natit, which gave me QE/CI support.

Im having a problem with my HD (check sig). Im only getting a score of 53 in the Xbench Disk test. The drives should be fast - 16MB cache, 7200RPM. I have them connected to the orange ports on the motherboard, which should be correct.

I will let you into a secret. It doesn't appear to matter which 7xxx series card you choose as the EFI string works for all of them. I chose a 7300GT & it happily worked with 7300GT, 7600GT & 7900GS all with full CI/QE. The xbench results are pretty much the same for all three cards too.

Thanks. 7300GT string worked for my 7300GS.

What are your BIOS settings? You must ensure that AHCI is enabled or the performance is awful. Please post your details xbench results.

AHCI is enabled and the jumper from the drive is removed, so it should be running at 3gb/sec, but score is still 53.

could someone please help me with editing the patches. My Volume is Leo and in Disk Utility, the drive is 1 and the "Leo" partition is 2. How or where would I edit the scripts? Thank you so much, in advance.

There is no need to edit the pre-patch.sh and post-patch.sh. You need to open terminal and navigate to the LEO_GA_P35_DS4_PACK_v12 folder. The easiest way to do this is to type "cd " into terminal and then drag the LEO_GA_P35_DS4_PACK_v12 folder onto the terminal window, press enter. Now you should be in the LEO_GA_P35_DS4_PACK_v12 folder in the terminal.

Now type "./pre-patch.sh Leo" and press enter (might need to type "sudo ./pre-patch.sh Leo" and enter your pw). Same goes for the post-patch.sh.

On a sidenote, instead of the ./pre-patch.sh, which installs PC_EFI, you might want to try Chameleon 1.0.11 depending on your hardware (check my sig). I find it much better and various little bugs are fixed.

Cheers.

Hi Guys,

I installed a PCI WLAN card but it´s not recognized by the system profiler. It says "no cards installed in this computer". What do I have to do to make it work?

I checked my bios settings but I colud only change the IRQs for PCI1 and PCI2. Both are on "auto" now and it looks like the mainboard sees the card, but OS X doesn´t.

Cheers,

hacki

Hi all,

I used tseug's guide, which is based on ls8's post patch, to install retail leopard. I've posted in tseug's forum but I am not getting any responses. Thought I might post here since my install is using ls8's kexts.

My biggest problem is that I can not find my AirportExpress with Airport utility nor does itunes find it as a way to play back music. I also can not see anyone on my network. Others can see me but I can not see them.

My second problem is when I shutdown, the OS stops, but the PC still has power, and you have to press and hold the power button to turn off fully. Sometimes it will completly shut down but most of the time it does not.

I am using a GA-P35-DS4 (F13) with 10.5.4 intalled. Should I reinstall the kexts? Has anyone else experienced these problems?

Hi Cack33,

What happens when you try to playback in iTunes? Does sound work in other applications? Is the volume to 100% in iTunes?

For your power off problem, theres a fix mentioned here:

http://forum.insanelymac.com/index.php?sho...hl=poweroff+fix

You need to install CHUD tools from apple to make it work.
