TheIntrepidSpaceboySpiff
First you should not use the USB 1.0 ports. Use the USB 2.0 Ports. Supposed that the stick is USB 2.0, you might use in the BIOS the settings for Hard Drive Priority, if your stick shows up there as a "hard disk", it should boot from it. That happened to me with a USB 2.0 external, and it worked for it, maybe it works for you. Thank you! Indeed the USB stick showed up in the BIOS setting "Hard Drive Priority" and I set it to #1 and told the BIOS to use "Hard Disk" as first boot device. But still nothing boots, the BIOS says "Verifying DMI Pool Data ................." and that's it. And I did not find any way to distinguish between USB1.1 and USB2.0, if I understand the manual right, all 12 ports are backwards compatible USB2.0 ports. Still I must be doing something wrong. <edit>When I go via F12 on BIOS boot to specify what to boot and explicitly tell it to boot from my USB stick (which <i>does</i> show up as a USB hd indeed), the BIOS prints "DISK BOOT FAILURE, INSERT SYSTEM DISK AND PRESS ENTER". So I know the culprit now. Has anyone any better idea that I had to clone the kalyway ISO to my USB stick so it is bootable? Thanx a lot, folks!</edit>
TheIntrepidSpaceboySpiff
Ok. This seems to be getting way OT, but apparently creating a bootable usb stick from an .iso using only OS X is black magic. Thousands of How-To's will tell me how to create a bootable DOS stick in Windows, which is (of course) of no use to me at all. So if anyone of you can tell me how to accomplish that or another way to get something to boot my hachintosh (for I have no DVD-burner and no MacIntel at hand and no way to connect the Hackintosh's hd to my powerbook), PLEASE end my suffering. And yes, I will stop bumping now. Thx for your understanding.
ddrdark
Hi! Something went wrong on my 10.5.2 update. Unfortunately I dont have a spare Intel Mac, just my hackintosh and a powerbook. And no Superdrive So to get my Hackintosh to boot from something I dl kalyway 10.5.2 and tried to install it onto my usb pen: dd if=Downloads/Kalyway_10.5.2_DVD_Intel_Amd/Kalyway_10.5.2_DVD_Intel_Amd.iso of=/dev/disk4 7670632+0 records in 7670632+0 records out 3927363584 bytes transferred in 3164.407115 secs (1241106 bytes/sec) The USB pen then shows up like a mounted kaly iso, so far, so good - but my PC refuses to boot from it. I tried everything, USB-(HDD,FDD,ZIP,CDROM), nothing works. Any ideas what I did wrong? Have you tried this? http://macgeek.freeflux.net/blog/archive/2...m-pendrive.html
TheIntrepidSpaceboySpiff
Have you tried this? http://macgeek.freeflux.net/blog/archive/2...m-pendrive.html I did now, and it wouldn't boot I only have the 10.5 retail DVD and bless 63.0. Maybe I made another mistake, but for today I'm done trying... A big thanks for your post though
TheIntrepidSpaceboySpiff
OK. Now I found my kalyway 10.5.1 DVD, booted from it, opened the Terminal and executed the post-install script after I had set the correct Volume name on my Powerbook. Still no boot. WTF is going wrong here? I did the recommended upgrade routine (though I am mad like hell I did such a stupid thing just to be able to install the most recent Safari - why oh why couln't I just have stayed with 10.5.1???) and apparently forgot to repair permissions before I did the reboot. Since then my Hacintosh refuses to boot. Just plain nothing after "Verifying DMI Pool Data .................". I did boot into a Ubuntu 8.04 CD to see if the data is still there, but that should not have changed any boot record/loader/whatever. Now booting the kaly dvd I did repair the permissions, I did execute the post-install script - to no avail. I hate sounding like a noob without patience, but I have no running Hacintosh for 4 days now and my powerbook ist too slow for pretty much everything I do. So, does anyone have a better idea than a archive and install from my 10.5.1 kaly dvd (for which I would have to delete some files on my notoriously full disks...??? Any suggestions would be very much appreciated!
TheIntrepidSpaceboySpiff
Is the prepatch destructive? I installed kaly 10.5.1 now onto a fresh harddisk but would really like to reanimate my standart partition I tried to upgrade to 10.5.2. The bootloader for 10.5.1 does not see the other install, so I guess I will have to fiddle with EFI and all. Now, can I just go through the complete routine ls8 describes in the first post without loosing my data / my previous install? Thx!

Treggs
First up, thanks to LS8 and pcwiz for there guides on the Gigabyte ds4. I have everything working perfectly except graphics. I'm running a p35 ds4 board with two gigabyte 8600 gts silent pipes with three Samsung 226BW's and no matter what I try I can't get the graphics working. I have torn this site apart looking for answers and as far as I can tell the 8600 GTS 256 seems to be a working card. I have tried everything I can find but now I'm stuck. All I get is the "your computer needs ot be rebooted" screen and the -v option doesn't produce anything obvious. It stops at an NTFS driver even though the only thing I have changed is installing a graphics driver (various ones). If someone could do a step by step idiot proof guide to getting this setup working I would be eternally grateful as I would love to try a triple screen mac pro Thanks in advance

Razlor
Hello, does anyone still have the link or the archive for v5 of the install pack and would be so kind to post it here? Thanks, Razlor By the way: The patched kernel breaks USB mounting for me, too EDIT: Ok, nevermind. I kind of reconstructed v5 with some of the quoted links from this thread. Now everything including SATA-hotplugging is working fine and i could not be more content. :-)

(please see image attached.) What could it be? Ginjaian
Drive: 80GB Maxtor PATA (for MAC OSX) Are you using a PATA to SATA converter on the HD? It won't work with the PATA HD connected to the IDE header on the mobo. OSX will only boot from the SATA ports as the Jmicron driver that supports IDE is loaded later in the boot sequence. I've used PATA to SATA converters on mine, but in the end it was worth buying a SATA HD for the install, as modern drives are much faster.

I have 2 cards / 4 Monitors @DVI Absolutely silent, power consumption is approx. 8-10 Watts / card. When installing 2 Cards you must set boot = PEG2 in BIOS, otherwise crash / KP on boot. The one I would use, is find/create a spare 10Gb partition and 'restore' the OSX DVD to that partition - if you are using the retail disk method (which is what this thread is all about), next just run the OSInstall.mpkg like it says in the guide, from the terminal. Or try a SATA->PATA converter on your DVD drive, OR, use a USB DVD drive. You have many options.
