I have read something about the timemachine and airport update causing problems. Any experiences so far with that update? Does it break on an install with ls8 patch from original DVD?

See my post 2 above. I installed using ls8's v7 scripts (10.5 retail DVD then update to 10.5.2 and Graphics Update) which installed the new Netkas kernel. However, I ran Software Update and understand that it replaces the kernel. I noticed the mach_kernel file in the root directory went from being visible (Netkas version) to invisible again, and that now the shutdown problem has resurfaced (ie when you shutdown, the OS stops, but the PC still has power, and you have to press and hold the power button to turn off fully). I don't find this much of an issue, so I've decided to leave it alone. No other problems noticed ... yet. If you've installed ls8's way, I'd say go for it. You can always replace the kernel again if you have issues.

just wanted to say thanks to ls8 for this great guide. After our truthful iMac G5 died with the video board probs that Apple has extended its warranty to 3 years - but our's is now 3.5 years ... we still have to see if Apple might be willing to fix it nevetheless.

Anyway - with the iMac I thought it might be time to try to build a hackintosh and I have to say once you get the hang of it it was easy as pie. The trickiest part for me was to find out which items are the right ones (I'm a mac user since 92 and have only build one pc box before: a mini-itx with via cpu which is our home server running debian etch).

So, this was my shopping list:

  • Gigabyte GA-P35-DS4 rev. 2.0
  • 2 x 750 Gig SAMSUNG HD753LJ SATA
  • Intel Q6600 Quadcore 2.4 GHz
  • 2 x 2 Gig PC800 DDR2
  • MSI NVidia Geforce 7600GT 256 Megs, passive cooled
  • LG GH20NS10 SATA DVD-R
  • Be Quiet Straight Power 400 W
  • CoolerMaster CM690 black

I am pretty pleased with the setup. The case is okayish (having mainly only dealt with Apple cases before there are a few things which are just "yuck" - like removing the front panel; on a mac it's just elegant and smooth). But apparently everything works. Graphic card is detected (currently only connected via VGA to the 20" Syncmaster - the DVI is used by the macmini), audio works, burning works, network does, sleep works (I have to figure out how to be able to wake the system up with the keyboard though - I suspect a BIOS setting), shutting down results in the system being restarted currently (any ideas?). I already updated the system using software update with the updates that where there - security update, time machine update, itunes etc. - no problem at all. I was just like as if it was a mac ;)

Also I need to figure out how to teach the system profiler and the "about this mac" to show proper information (currently it says as model identifier P35-DS4 and of course this needs to be changed  ). I now think I should've gotten a more powerful PSU - adding 2 more optical drives (a DVD reader and my good ol' Yamaha F1 CD burner) and it's so tempting to put a few more HDs into the case.

I would like to post the BIOS settings that I currently have (I have to admit that I don't even know which BIOS version I'm currently running ...) and have you guys do a sanity check on them? For that I have to dig up the card reader for the SD card ... maybe tomorrow.

Last but not least a tidbit that might be interesting for others: I own three WD My Book 2 Essential - external 1 TB USB drives. The main reason I bought them late last year was that they were cheaper than the internal HDs on their own (there are WD10EACS built into the plastic cases) - I wanted eventually move them to a proper Taurus case but am waiting for the v.2 to hit the stores here. Anyway, the hackintosh case now does have enough room for hard drives so i connected one them internally. After I started the box up the drive showed - but only 33 MB capacity (yes, MEGAbyte). I thought that it's a cable or whatever issue ... nope, even the BIOS shows the drive as being 33 MB in capacity. Connected it to a windows box, linux box - no change. Connected it via the USB bridge from the case - no change. Apparently there is a problem with these WD drives where this happens - the drive is fried. Fortunately I didn't break the case so I put the drive back in and will now return it to WD to have it replaced. Has anyone of you experienced trouble with this board and this drive? Is anyone successfully running a 1 TB drive with this board?

Sorry for the lenghty post - thanks to those of you that actually read it :D and of course last but not least thanks to ls8 for this great guide!

cheers

-jibe

I keep getting-

Download-session invalid. Please click here.

Possible reasons:

Download-session expired. Direct-links last a few minutes for free users and a few days for premium-users.

You requested this download-session from a different IP than yours. If you use AOL, try a different browser.

If nothing helps, getting a premium-account will override the IP-check, which means it will solve this problem.

1 I started up the first time without the network (ethernet) cable connected. After plugging the cable in, I couldn't get a network connection. Restarting, reinstalling the RealtekR1000.kext made no difference. I checked the cable was still working under XP. Finally, I used the SMART LAN option in the BIOS, which checks the link to the hub. This finally got it working on the following restart! I've set the ip manually, as I think there's still an issue with letting DHCP set this.

i had some probs with the r1000.kext, too (no networking after sleep, and sometimes even after rebooting. or the card just stoped working while surfin' da net).

i just removed that r1000.kext and replaced the vanilla IONetworking.kext , no problems so far. the onboard lan is recognized as an 8168B gigabit card, and DHCP,Bonjour, SMB and AFP are working as good as they could. plus, the networking tool is reporting the packets now :)

Thank you, thank you, thank you! :thumbsup_anim:

The sound is working great!

Now, I have to figure out how XP installation tweaked my Seagate disk to not be able to go pass the AHCI bios.

(aka xp installation broke my disk :( )

It is still working on another SATA disk, so not all is lost.

GIGABYTE: EP35-DS4, Core2Duo E6450, kalyway_leo 10.5.1, 10.5.2 combo update, nvinject latest, MSI NX8500GT.

Networking 90% (all works but seems a little slow)

Xbench is 151 (is that about right?????)

Hi @ll i discovered a little problem with my Rig. I can not find my AirportExpress with Airport utility nor does itunes find it as a way to play back music. Additionally itunes does not see my NAS (itunes server). All these things work if i put my Vista Disc in. Network does work in OSX i can connect to my NAS via WebGui or FTP i can also manage the Airport Express if i enter it manually...

Anybody has these things working on his Gigabyte P35-DS4? I'm using Kalyway 10.5.2 Airport+Time Machine update. I already re- installed IONetworkingfamily binary in IONetworkingfamily.kext with the one from ls8 V7 package. Any advice?

Hi,

I'm going to build from scratch a new homebrew mac (to replace my old Dual G5 PowerMAC) following this magnific community...

as I told in the Audio forum I'm interested to GA-p35-ds4 mainboard and decided to ask your opinion in this forum

as it is a very complete source of infos for this MB.

I'd buy the GA-P35-DS4 sided with a Sapphire Ati HD 2600 PRO (512mb) graphic board.

After all the tweaks Will I obtain a rock solid machine with this config? Could I compare the new machine with my old G5 as stability and usability (don't mind if internal sound is or not digital or so, I will use an external OSX compatible soundcard)? How does USB and firewire port behave?

Every suggestion is happly accepted :-)

THANKS for the support...

firewire works like a charm man, im running the MOTU ultralite off a DS4 mobo. ROCK SOLID

Hi again people...

I realized that with the latest security and time machine update the usb ports work ok with vanilla kernel (still having no shutdown, reboot and sleep), but, with netkas kernel my usb disk is not automonted when i plug it. It will be detected only if i leave it on and reboot the system. Anyone with this issue??

Im talking about a gigabyte ga-p35-ds4 board.

thanks

Just wanted to add to the list another successful update for all those currently available from apple (3/26/08 @ 7:00PM EST) including Airport+Time Machine. So far stable as can be, but of course no reboot and shutdown works only on occasion if I log off first.

Hi LS8, everything works until the last step(post-patch.sh) and then I get Operation not permitted errors, tonnes of them???

Example of a couple.

cp: extra/AppleSMBIOS.kext/Contents/._pbdevelopment.plist: could not copy extended attributes to /Volumes/backup/System/Library/Extensions/AppleSMBIOS.kext/Contents/._pbdevelopment.plist: Operation not permitted

cp: extra/AppleSMBIOS.kext/._Contents: could not copy extended attributes to /Volumes/backup/System/Library/Extensions/AppleSMBIOS.kext/._Contents: Operation not permitted

You can use this package to make and release your own patch for other motherboards. Please give me credits if you do so ;)

Thanks again for the install pack. It was a god send.

I'm using the sleep kernel, and "it sorta works".

To make the machine sleep, after choosing "Sleep", I have to unplug the USB keyboard cable.

As soon as I plug in the keyboard, the machine wakes up.

I've seen the sleep worked and now it does not. When it worked, the space key woke up the machine.

I've tried a few BIOS and Control panel options but I have no clue why the sleep no longer works.

Could someone give some clue how I can make the machine sleep with the keyboard attached?

Thanks!

i just replaced all of the ktext included in your package. sleep still doesn't work. i'm gonna try using an unpatched leopard disc.

Sleep does not work when a keyboard is present.

I unplug the keyboard and the machine does sleep.

How about yours?
