I'm having a lot of issues updating to 10.5.7. I've tried the delta update installer as well as through system update. the delta update causes the gray screen of death (with the 'you need to restart your computer' message). System update installed successfully, but will KP on reboot whether booting regularly, -v, -x, and any other combination of switches. I installed leopard on another drive, ran the v17 patch successfully, rebooted, and still getting a kernel panic. Unfortunately, my monitor is VGA and the cmdline is shifted about an inch to the left (missing the first inch of output).

 

What I can tell you is that it complains a lot about rtl.r1000.nic.ext. This is what I see:

Also LS8 when did you drop the Jmicron driver? I'm still trying to see if I can get a drive to boot off one of those ports.

I replaced the AppleHDA and HDAEnabler with this one N1_1.6.2a37_3outs2ins_digital_HDA_headphone.zip. Now i dont get the above messages and Im able to boot into the welcome screen where you setup your account. Unfortunately booting into safe mode (-x) does not work, it hangs on this line:

usr/sbin/ocspd[65]: starting

 

I also have no sound, and generating EFI string for graphics doesnt work. EFIStudio says the strong has been written, but when i restart nothing has changed. Maybe the strings have to be generated in safe mode.

 

Is anyone else experiencing these issues with the DS4 2.1?

I've got all my ports, IDE as well, working now that I've added the 64bit version if the Jmicron driver. v1.1 directly off their site doesn't work. I've got 8GB of RAM. Next is to try to boot off of it.

I have installed using a Kaly installation on a separate disk, installed Leopard using Retail DVD , applied 10.5.7 Combo update (without applying post patch - have also tried with post patch - same result), run the LS8v17 script from inside a LS8v17 folder on the desktop of the Kaly disk, I type y for all questions except the path of plist (where i press return). I reboot and I always get the panic where it does not find the ACPI driver. (I have selected Y for installation of the ACPI Reboot Fix)

 

Incidentally I can install 10.5.7 using the Retail DVD method v4.4 but using 10.5.7 Combo instead of 10.5.6 applying post patch and not using the LS8 script at all. Installation Disk is a Solid State Disk Drive in case that makes any difference although I can install perfectly using Retail DVD method on it and applying the post patch.

I ran into a similar problem before. Double check to make sure the "Ignore ownership on this volume" ISN'T checked when you install. When installing, LS8's script can't verify permissions. To check, highlight the drive and hit cmd + i.

 

Also make sure you're using a password, as opposed to blank, when installing. Bank passwords don't play nice when running shell scripts.

I tried it out and for the record I can boot off the purple jmicron SATA ports with Apple's stock kext. No need for the hacked 64-bit version.

For the record the Jmicron SATA ports work with Apple's stock kext. Bootable as well on a GA-EP35-DS4. However, it seems you need the hacked 64-bit version to get the IDE ports to work.

I have now rebuilt the machine using Retail DVD v4.4 + Chameleon + 10.5.7 Combo update and all is working fine. I assume by port you mean which SATA connector I am using - I am using SATA 0 to boot from - the Disk is a OCZ Vertex Solid State Drive.

 

I do think you may have been following the right path when you suggested the ownership issue - I think that this could be a permissions issue of some kind. Given that I am able to install correctly using another method I suspect that the hardware and bios settings are fine but something is preventing the build from seeing the ACPI Driver. The panic error I get is that the driver for ACPI cannot be found.

Well you always have to start at the beginning. I can't tell you how many times my problems stemmed from stupid things I've overlooked. I was pretty sure you weren't a newbie but I had to ask. I by no means am an expert but I've installed and reinstalled various builds at least 100 times myself as well.

 

As for the permissions thing. I have a feeling Disk Utility in 10.5.7 selects "Ignore privileges" by default now. I wasn't picking up on this and when LS8's script went to repair permissions it would throw an error. Something to think about.

kdawg, thanks for the suggestions; they were helpful - at the present I am going to go back to my usual install method as I don't have the time to dedicate to this methodology. I did do some more basic problem resolution earlier today and am beginning to think that I am experiencing an issue with either permissions or location resolution related to the shift of location of the modified kexts. I successfully built using the modified kexts from the ls8 method when located in the normal location but cannot get it to work when in the modified location.

 

I may come back to this when I can allocate it some time. My knowledge of BSD is limited (my background is IBM/Microsoft although latterly in customer relationship rather than technical).

I generated the string with OSX86Tools, but get the same exact results. No effect what so ever. I only get 1 resolution setting in System Preferences -> Displays -> Resolutions and no QE/CI. Also, no difference if i remove the Hz or not. Its like its not even seeing the com.apple.Boot.plist file...

 

Do the strings need to be installed safe mode and permissions repaired in safe mode as well? I think I did this. Can't remember since i've isntalled like 30 times already...

 

I didnt install to the /Extras folder b/c when I did that the machine didnt boot at all. My only problem is the graphics at the moment.

 

The EFI string has worked for me every time with previous install before 10.5.7 and ls8v16. Boy, this is annoying, grrr

I'm trying to adjust the calibration and while I move the sliders or switch between color profiles, the display changes to the new gamma settings and then about 1 second later just resets back to default. Seems the drivers we're all using don't support color profiles in some way? Does anyone know? I'm using EFI string method, is that the problem?

No problems here with calibration. I usually use PCWiz's OSX86 tools. However, I've rolled my own into a custom string because I have two different nVidia Cards.

I just switched up to v17, and tried the new applehda/hdaenabler combo. I'm getting a cracking sound on my p35-ds4, any time a new sound plays after some silence. Is there any fix for this?

Tadaaa! I've gotten it to boot!! The only question that remains is .. how.. and what was the problem, anyway. I copied 2 kexts (AppleDecrypt.kext and IOATAFamily) over from my working 10.5.6 /extra into the new /extra and BOOM it works.

 

Thanks for posting that, copying the AppleDecrypt kext from an iAtkos install fixed my boot-up problem as well. However, like you, I have no idea why this was required.

 

I used to have a vanilla 10.5.6 install on an EP45-DS3R that I fubar'd by trying to apply the 10.5.7 combo update. Before the update, it ran fine for months without an AppleDecrypt kext from any other source. But after I was forced to re-install, I could not get it to boot into 10.5.6 or 10.5.7 until I read this thread and copied the AppleDecrypt kext from the iAtkos install I use to perform the vanilla installations. And this is with using the same DMG images as I had originally used that seemed to magically work the previous time (Install DVD + 10.5.6 Combo Update + EP45 kext bundle/installer)!

 

Anyway, 10.5.7 is working wonderfully now, but I still wish I knew why this was required.

EFI edits the plist in the system folder not the extra's folder. After generating the new plist copy it to the extra's folder (get info to change permissions if required).

I did as you said, copied the plist over to the Extras folder. I changed all of the privileges to read/write, but the machine fails to boot now, keeps restarting... What are the correct permissions for the plist in the Extras folder? Does the copy need to occur in safe mode?
