osx86 on sony laptop X505

I have a sony X505 laptop (yes the damn slim one!) that doesnt allow to boot from usb (unless it has its official cdrom or floppy). it has no internal floppy or cd. in the bios it has the option to boot from firewire..

 

i have a usb hdd but i cant boot from that so i got a firewire enclosure, put a hard disk in and still it cant boot.

 

my only other option is to boot from network. Anyone know of any ways for me to boot osx86 from network? sounds interesting but dunno if it can be done.

Hi.

 

Maybe, there's another way for you. I have the Sony Vaio FS115M. That does not allow to boot from USB either. Here is what I did:

 

Install OS X as described on this page: http://xplodenet.com/ ( -> guide -> blue version)

 

When you are finished, add the USB Drive to the VMWare installation as an additional harddrive and create an image of the virtual OS X installation with Norton Ghost or Drive Image inside the VMWare onto that drive. (I used Northon Ghost.)

Now, having an image of OS X on that drive, you can recreate that partition onto your real HD.

 

I got Norton Ghost on a bootable CD so I could use that inside the VMWare.

 

Worked for me. OS X is running good. No sound so far (HD Audio Codec) an no native graphics support (Geforce Go 6200).

I'm hoping to put OS X on my Sony Vaio S360. I am waiting however for the wireless drivers to be available. Let me know how successful you guys are. One of the guides around here says you can install it on a partition. Check that out if you haven't already.

I do not have a cdrom drive to boot from.

i got a normal hd here with the image on it, got a usb hdd with the image on it.. and an ipod aswell lol.. but if i could boot somehow i could have booted into linux and use dd there.. but i cant.

 

the internal hdd is only 20gb which has 10gig for c and 10 for d. d has some recovery stuff which i cannot recover anyway for some strage reason.

 

if i screw up my c drive.. i cant recover it and no way to reinstall windows

So, how was anyone able to install Windows in the first place?

 

Anyway, when you are afraid to lose your original installation, then don't try to do a native OS X installation. The actual state of OS X on (custom) intel hardware is not worth the risc.

A partition is a drive that has been allocated that the operating system reads. For example if you had a second physical hard drive that would be a partition in addition to the hard drive you already have. However if you divided your hard drive into two (which it is, a C:\ and D:\) you have two partitions.

 

In your case, you have two partitions, but only twenty gigs. I'd probably wait until there is an easier way to install OS X if you are as concerned as you are about your Windows installation.. Or... image the windows disc and back it up then go to town on installing OS X.
