Hey guys!

This is kind of a curious question. I'm running BrazilMac's 10.5 and JaS' 10.4.8 When I boot into Leopard, the fan on my video card doubles in both speed and volume. It happens right after the grey apple is done loading. In Tiger, it is very quiet. I am running NVinject drivers, but because I'm running the same ones for Leo and Tiger, I don't believe that is the problem. I've also tried Natit and Titan, both of which have the same effect...the increased speed. I had to boot into safe mode once, and the video card stayed quiet. System Profiler still showed NVinject was loaded, so it leads me to believe it's some other extension/kext that got added or changed for Leo's release.

I'm just kinda paranoid. I don't mind the noise really, just the fact that it could get burnt our or whatever twice as fast. Anyone have any advice?

are you getting anywhere with this? I've exactly the same problem with my setup. 7600GT and NVinject. Worked fine on Tiger but now get the same fan speed increase in Leopard.

Do you know which kexts are responsible for fan control? is it the PowerManagement kext? I transferred mine from tiger but I have problems with it loading looking at the logs.

Sorry to say I haven't had any luck. THere's gotta be some change or addition to a kext file from Tiger to Leopard... I actually booted up into Safe Mode (-x) and the fan still does that, so I believe it is related to a stock kext in Leopard. If anyone get anywhere, be sure to post. I'm at work, but I'll fiddle with it once again when I get home.

For those keeping track, I tried swapping kexts out for BM's kexts, ToH kexts, and Vanilla kexts. Also I tried Tiger kexts. The Tiger kexts seemed to get rid of the problem, but then I don't have QE capibilities. The problem lies in the NVDAResman and NVDANV40Hal.kext files... All the other GeForce kexts had the same noisy result between Tiger and Leopard. I found when those 2 were NOT loaded, the fan was normal, but once again, no QE/CI.

Still trying to figure out why Tiger's NVDANV40Hal and/or NVDAResman kexts allow QE and QI with normal fan speeds (in Tiger), but Leopard's make it crazy fast...

There can be a very simple answer to this problem:

Has anyone considered that the fan speeds might be related to Leopard using more power than Tiger?

There are 2 possible causes for this problem:

1) Buggy drivers

2) The card is indeed hotter running in Leopard than in Tiger

Buggy drivers could be a possible problem but we can sorta rule them out because if you used the same drivers in Tiger and in Leopard the fan is running at full speed, its probably not drivers.

The MOST likely (although not 100% sure) cause for this is Leopards increased hardware requirements. It uses more power from your CPU and graphics card thus making the graphics card hotter and in turn making the fans work harder. The best solution for this is to provide more cooling for your card, perhaps water cooling or a powerful fan.

Thanks, ~pcwiz.

Unfortunately, I was thinking the same thing you were... Basically how Apple included something in their drivers for Leopard that increases amount of power required for hardware acceleration. What boggles me, is how other users using the 7900 have no problems at all! So weird, I just installed ToH's and as soon as hardware acceleration is enabled, fans go crazy. I dunno, I think I'm just going to give up on this idea, live with it, and when my fans EDIT: '{censored}' out, I'll try and RMA it.

That or run Tiger.

I haven't noticed as dramatic an increase in fan speed or noise with my BFG 7900 GS, perhaps it's there. Truth is, the fan runs loud in XP too, as far as I'm concerned.

The added graphical demand may have something to do with it. My 12' powerbook is running hotter under retail Leopard, with the fans more likely to kick in. A bit of a disappointment, really.

It runs snappier than tiger on both my hackintosh and powerbook

Thanks, ~pcwiz.

You have 2 choices:

1) Go back to Tiger

2) Get a new video card with decent cooling

what makes you say that?

pcwiz - I've got a 7600GT. a fairly decent gfx card and it never had it's fans going crazy on Tiger. Why would it start with leopard. The UI hasn't changed that much, I mean what's it doing that would tax the GPU that much? nothing I can see.

I still think it's a bug.

Its just a matter of fact. Even if you can't see it, Leopard uses more resources than Tiger. For example, do you notice a difference in the UI in Windows 2000 and Windows 98? Windows 98 requires a minimum of 16MB of RAM but 2000 requires 64MB. Can't see a difference in the UI but 2000 uses more resources. Same thing with Tiger and Leopard.

Yeah,

the same stuff here, when i boot osx leo, my fan on the XFX 7900 GS goes loud!

I boot Windows XP it is so silent, like a dream, only i start a hardcore game its increase the loudness!

Mobo : Asrock 945g-dvi

Gfx : XFX 7900 GS

so its not a Mobo Problem :-)

any idea's out?

ditto on this problem. i also have an XFX 7900 GS. booo. can people post which 7 series cards they have (brand) that dont fan up?

pcwiz have you build the comp thats in your sig yet? i have the same mobo/proc/video as it. if you have already built it, do you get this problem too?

none that i know of. my 7900GS broke anyway, and i RMAd it. XFX gave me back a 8600GTS. In leopard, the fan does not rev up at all.

it doesnt really matter to me since i went with a fanless solution anyway (the arctic cooing accelero s2).

Solved!!!This drove me nuts! I decided I couldn´t wait for 10.5.2 and installed the video kexts from 10.5.2 (find them at http://scottdangel.com/blog/?p=18). After reboot, the card was unaudible!! BTW, no differences in speed... and nothing crashes.Hope it works for you.P.S: I have attached the installer. Use default if 256 mb RAM, else select customize in the installer.Obviously the attachment did not post correctly. It was too heavy for a single attachment. Still, you can get it in the linked site in my previous post.
