xx66stangxx
I want to create a social network for my college I am attending but I am not really sure how to do it. I have worked with html before and I am familiar to MySQL for connecting to the server and ext. but I am not really to sure how to piece it all together and I have heard of sites like ning.com but I don't want a pre-made site, I want it to be mine so I can host on a www.com like my clothing company. any suggestions? :-) Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/68923-how-can-i-create-a-social-network/ Share on other sites
inimicus
I'm pretty sure you already know how to answer your own question. Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/68923-how-can-i-create-a-social-network/#findComment-489902 Share on other sites
Dainix
You'll need a base of some sort. I started with the User Base PHP application. From there, you can stem off of it and make your own. Look in the PHP section of hotscripts.com for some templates. ~pcwiz
I think I have just the tool you need: Ning Awesome tool to easily (I mean n00b easy) to create and publish your own social network. Never mind. I see that you don't want to use Ning but I don't see why not...You could have a www.example.com domain and direct it to your Ning site. ~pcwiz
Oh BTW, Ning displays ads on free accounts so you may want to upgrade to a paid version. Suhail
Well you would have to learn a server side language such as PHP. PHP is free and open source and pretty easy to learn. With PHP and MySQL I am sure you can create a excellent site Good Luck Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/68923-how-can-i-create-a-social-network/#findComment-524696 Share on other sites
(MoC)
Hmm, do a forum like I did. They are very customizable and easy to set up. Here is a list of the best ones (by me) PHPbb (The one I'm using, look at the check out my forum topic) SMF (SimpleMachineForums) IPB (Invision Power Board which is what imf is running) PHP-Nuke Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/68923-how-can-i-create-a-social-network/#findComment-525276 Share on other sites
~pcwiz
Yeah a forum would work too but a social network just seems more suited for the task Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/68923-how-can-i-create-a-social-network/#findComment-525322 Share on other sites
rawmassen
I would highly (highly) recommend Ruby on Rails (RoR). Fast and VERY easy to learn. If I'm not mistaken there is even a book you can buy that is specifically for building social networking sites. ~pcwiz
Yep. there is a book (Practice Rails Social Networking Sites): http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/1590598415 Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/68923-how-can-i-create-a-social-network/#findComment-526561 Share on other sites
Suhail
Rails is easy but not as extensible as PHP. I have learnt and used both and PHP beats RoR hands down. No matter what anyone at railsenvy says /me hates the very bad imitations of the Apple Ads by RailsEnvy Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/68923-how-can-i-create-a-social-network/#findComment-533453 Share on other sites
