justanobody
an alternative patch to one posted in another thread, but which works on both intel and power pc: hexedit the file: /Applications/Microsoft Office 2008/Office/MicrosoftComponentPlugin.framework/Versions/12/MicrosoftComponentPlugin for intel, jump to offset 400CAD and change "E8 1C F8 FF FF" to "90 90 90 90 90". for powerpc, jump to offset 1190C0 and change "4B FF FA 31" to "60 00 00 00". be sure not to add, but instead to replace the existing code. both changes put a nop in place of a call to the function "McpDoBetaCheck". SurferSD
Using iPatch, I have automated this for those that find working a HEX editor next to impossible. Try a search on TPB for Office 2008.... look for an upload from Today.

zoomie
Using iPatcher, I have automated this. Try a search on TPB for Office 2008.... look for an upload from Today. Thanks for that patch! I haven't used Office in a couple weeks, so when I got the warning that the beta was going to expire in a 4 days, I started to panic. Applying the patch was simple. waradmin
Since I am playing it safe now and not torrenting at school, I went the hex editor way. While I couldn't find 400CAD I was able to find 400CA0 and was able to change the values to 90's and get it working. Thanks for the share.
wickedneuron
Just a note. Not sure if this is related to the "patch". I'm testing this at work (several of us are testing it) and I get a message saying that Microsoft Office cannot start because Microsoft Office is already in use. Anyone else getting this? Anyone know how to stop this from happening?
blackturtleneck
Office sends out a beacon on the local network (udp port 2222) with it's serial number. If another machine tries to open a copy of office with the same serial, it borks. Been like that since Office X. Use little snitch to block all office apps from sending on that port. I think its actually pretty cool that it checks like that, pretty innovative. However as stated little snitch will fix that with ease.
wickedneuron
Thanks for the tip, blackturtleneck. I tried it and no dice. Sigh... I blocked word, entourage, excel, powerpoint from using udp 2222 and I'm still having the problem. Is it some other app I need to block maybe? blackturtleneck
Try blocking TCP 3000-65535 for office apps.
wordlypurrfect
I so wish I was more knowledgeable and understood all of the posts about the 2008 fix. I expire in 2 days, and I can't figure out what you all are talking about. I'm so behind... still trying to learn. Anyone try uninstalling and reinstalling? Otherwise, I just have to install 2004. Will all of my Entourage addresses, etc., be there when I do?? Would really appreciate more info in Macly-challenged form!I so wish I was more knowledgeable and understood all of the posts about the 2008 fix. wickedneuron
No dice on the blocking of the beacon. I've set little snitch (2.0) to block the local network udp 2000 AND tcp 3000-65535. I'm still getting the message that another copy is in use. Anybody got any other ideas? Thanks, by the way, again, for the previous 2 ideas.
