Apple is not turning around, they have the same market share in Personal Computers as they did 10 years ago.

If you say, what about the iPhone? I say, everyone knows that the cell phone industry is a fast moving and unprofitable market. In less than a year, something hotter and more "fly" than the iPhone will be out and everyone will forget about the iPhone.

What about the iPod? Ok, I give you the iPod, it was a great idea that took off for one reason...

Dumb douche bags.

Now before I criticize any further, let me explain what happens. About 75% of people who own an iPod, go out and by and iPod because it is whats cool and what everyone else has. They waste tons of money on this MP3 player, which it is, that does the same thing as other MP3 players. There are tons of alternatives that have the same features (or similar), bigger memory, and a color screen. (THIS STATEMENT DOES NOT, I REPEAT DOES NOT INCLUDE THE IPOD TOUCH, THAT IS A WONDERFUL LITTLE PIECE OF HARDWARE.) Back to the normal iPods, oh they have a calander, games, and other stuff. WOOPIE DOO!!! Who effin uses it, comon'.

I personally love Apple's OS X. It is great, it is awesome, it is pretty. And I really do not have a bias about any computer company or OS or whatever in general. I love my hac a mac, and my windows install, and my ubuntu linux install. My Xbox 360 and Zune are also awesome, not to mention my old school PowerBook Wallstreet, and when I had my iBook.

Apple has there niche just like they did before... plain and simple... and that is how it should stay...

None of the above. It was the iMac. After a 10 year low in 1997, their stock hit an all-time high in 1999, about a year after the original iMac came out. Of course Apple took a big hit in 2001, but then every tech company did. In 2003 the stock started climbing again because of the 3G iPod, but I think it really was the iMac that turned Apple around - without it, there may have been no chance for an iPod.

...and the whole reason the iPod became popular in the first place has gone entirely over your head. The iPod did not become popular because it was cool to have one. It became popular because it had the best interface. It didn't matter that it didn't have the largest capacity, or the most features. Other MP3 players looked better than it too, and were often smaller. The fact that it was the first player that was useable with thousands of songs is why it took off - I don't mean others couldn't hold or play thousands of songs. I mean the iPod's scroll wheel made it much easier to scroll through your library. Without the interface, the iPod wouldn't have been any different than the others.

I think Apple has a longer history than just 1 straight black & white "turnaround". That being said, the iMac was a big deal. The guy who came up with it got a HUUUUGE bonus. Huge.

Now, I have no idea about what the iPod is doing for Apple as far as stocks or income or any of that. I do think, however, that Apple has gotten more popular over the past few years.

Also, keep in mind that Mac computers are becoming an industry standard in a lot of .. well.. industries :D. Macs are used a lot in the world of professional video. Also, 99.999999% of world class, professional studios use Mac computers with either Pro Tools HD or Logic Pro. There's just no comparison to a mac when it comes to such technologies.

My 2 cents :D

As a pc user coming over to macs now i can say it is definitely the ipod that started me looking towards apple. I would not have even thought about macs were it not for the ipod coming out.

The ipod is what will attract pc users to look and the look and feel of the mac is what will make pc users switch.

Biggest problem as i mentioned on my other thread is that people dont even know what a mac is. my favourite question i get asked is "what spec PC is a mac and what version of windows does it run?" no joke.

Looking back, I think one of the most important changes Jobs & Co. made right away was slashing the entire Mac lineup from the countles "Sculley era" boxes down to 3. That was done post haste (and pre i-anything) to streamline the whole Apple organization right down to the balance sheet. I think that move was largely Apple's saving grace in that if that hadn't happened when it did... well there may not have been a booming "post beige" period like ala iMac, iPod etc. ~OS X86

I believe it's something like 50% of all profit (perhaps revenue)...Personally I don't think it really turned Apple around though. The first few generations of iPod weren't well received.

the iMac G3, for me, is symbolic of Apple changing from the company they were to the company they are today; and the direction they are trying to take.

iPod. I used to have a Creative Nomad 32MB. That used to be awesome. I mean it held 16 Songs. I used to be so happy. Then I lost it and my Mom got me an iPod 3G. The box itself mesmerized me, i mean never have I seen such a box. The box itself had class, and WOW. The iPod was beyond words. 20GB........but so small, so cute, so beautiful just wonderful. At that time my HDD was 20GB. The only other hard disk based player was the brick sized Creative Something.

The iPod showed me there was something other than Windows. OSX86 made it a reality. Now I have a Mac. and my Trusty 3G

iMac. I have just always been impressed with those machines, even when I really didn't like Apple. The iMac G3, G4, G5, I wanted every one of them ;) (Just couldn't quite afford, yet) They're technically amazing! Even the new intel ones are great.

Apple is what made MP3 players popular. They did a great job with designing and marketing. I don't really care for any other brands, I'll stick with Apple. If you're gonna say the iPod sucks, look at the Zune. That's a total {censored} poor counter that failed by Microsoft.

The first computer I ever "used" was a Mac in the early eighties. It was a "computer course", only designed to grab people's money, so you were hardly allowed to touch it. However I could have killed for such a machine, which at the time cost more than a year salary!

Fast forward to the late nineties, my house mates in Brighton owned a Mac again, and I was allowed to use it.

So that explains, at least in my case, why I like Macs and OS X.

However I have decided that I won't buy one: Apple is mean when it comes to specs and greedy when it comes to prices. No thanks.
