mac os x forever
What would be the best distro of Linux or UNIX free or commercial for my iMac G3 350mHz? Alessandro17
I suppose either Debian or Yellow Dog Use the DistroWatch search: http://distrowatch.com/search.php (In "Architecture" tick "powerpc") See also: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/PowerPC#Operating_systems And BTW, openSUSE has also a PowerPC version: http://software.opensuse.org/ Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/65723-best-distro-of-linuxunix-for-my-imac-g3/#findComment-465845 Share on other sites

mac os x forever
solaris 10? Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/65723-best-distro-of-linuxunix-for-my-imac-g3/#findComment-466686 Share on other sites
Alessandro17
solaris 10? I am not aware of PPC support by Solaris 10. However OpenSolaris seems to have experimental PPC support (Polaris): http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/OpenSolaris http://www.opensolaris.org/os/community/power_pc/ Unless you are planning to use your iMac G3 as a server, Solaris is a very boring OS anyway. Did you try the DistroWatch search? It comes up with a reasonably long list, 30 possibilities. Toaster37
xubuntu would be my best guess for something that would work with your ppc. Its based of xfce so it will less of a system hog than kubuntu or ubuntu Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/65723-best-distro-of-linuxunix-for-my-imac-g3/#findComment-466949 Share on other sites
Dr. Hurt
I like ubuntu even-though it's a little slow. I still think it's much faster than windows. Alessandro17
Instead of shamelessly advertising Ubuntu & Co, can anybody give a thought to the user's actual NEEDS? (Namely the user has an iMac G3 350mHz). ~pcwiz
I tried Ubuntu on my iMac G3 and it doesn't work. However, I do recall that Yellow Dog linux also works with PPC. Atown
yeah yellow dog is very compatible and some argue that older yellowdog copies work even better. might also look into CentOS (4.5 is much better than 5.0 right now btw)if your wanting server stuff and/or possibly an install of Slax (some work required for install) Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/65723-best-distro-of-linuxunix-for-my-imac-g3/#findComment-468026 Share on other sites
mac os x forever
I just don’t want it any slower then 10.4.10 is for me with 512mb ram (I don’t do much multitasking so I almost never run out of ram unless I'm using Azureus) Also I want a good looking gui that will work with my Ati 3D Rage Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/65723-best-distro-of-linuxunix-for-my-imac-g3/#findComment-469688 Share on other sites
