I suppose either Debian or Yellow Dog

Use the DistroWatch search:

(In "Architecture" tick "powerpc")

See also:

And BTW, openSUSE has also a PowerPC version:

solaris 10?

I am not aware of PPC support by Solaris 10.

However OpenSolaris seems to have experimental PPC support (Polaris):

Unless you are planning to use your iMac G3 as a server, Solaris is a very boring OS anyway.

Did you try the DistroWatch search? It comes up with a reasonably long list, 30 possibilities.

yeah yellow dog is very compatible and some argue that older yellowdog copies work even better. might also look into CentOS (4.5 is much better than 5.0 right now btw)if your wanting server stuff and/or possibly an install of Slax (some work required for install)

I just don’t want it any slower then 10.4.10 is for me with 512mb ram (I don’t do much multitasking so I almost never run out of ram unless I'm using Azureus)

Also I want a good looking gui that will work with my Ati 3D Rage

Then Debian with Xfce is probably what you are looking for.
