Do i have to purchase a "UPGRADE" version or can i just go to the store and grab any vista intall cd?

To make it more clear, is there a seperate upgrade version that i need to get or does any vista install cd have an upgrade option?

It will be vista ultimate by the way

thanks for any help

If you can have the normal vista install cd, go for it instead of the upgrade one.

With normal cd, you can upgrade or do a fresh install. But with upgrade cd you can only upgrade. So if you want to do a fresh install, you will have to install win xp first than do the upgrade.

Are you upgrading from lower version of Vista to Ultimate edition? I f so then just get the Vista ultimate upgrade. And if you are upgrading from XP ( Vista upgrade will invalidate your XP key) it is better start from scratch. BTW you can use the Vista upgrade disk to do a full install by installing it first without the key. And then just upgrade using the same disk. It is very important that you get the physical copy of the upgrade rather than the downloaded one.

Actually this is not correct, you can perform a clean install using the upgrade media, you just have to install Vista twice, as noted above.

thanks for the responses... im upgrading from xp pro to ultimate. I want to do the upgrade cause i dont want to have to save everything and reisnstal/ retore it after a clean install. Im not really worried about the performance issues cause my laptop isnt slow so any performance loss should be minimal.

It does not "invalidate" the XP key. The license states that when you upgrade from XP to vista, the XP key is part of the valid Vista upgrade license and cannot be used to install XP on a different computer when the Vista upgrade license is in use. It's kind of confusing for the un initiated. If you decide to abandon Vista, the XP key can be used again.
