B612
Hey guys. I don't know whether I am the only one to have this problem, but I haven't been able to find any help in the other posts. The problem is: If I plug a usb device and my computer is on, the device just doesn't work. In the case of a usb drive (including the iPod), it doesn't mount. If I want my usb devices to work correctly, I have to start the OS with the devices already plugged-in. Does anyone know how to fix this problem? I really don't like having to restart my computer every time I plug a usb device! Thank you for your support! B612
Does this silence mean that nobody else has the same problem or that everyone has it and doesn't know how to fix it? Hakemon
Yea, I guess so. I'm fed up with the fact that the presence of a USB controller on mine causes a kernel panic at boot, and is sometimes fine with USB and actually has "moods", and not a single person is willing to help. Hope you get your situation sorted. Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/63151-plugged-usb-devices-not-working/#findComment-447540 Share on other sites
lawlzor
sometimes it helps to boot into windows and use the safely remove hardware function to stop the device. i had to do that with my hybridrive before it would work. B612
To OMG!!WTF?!BBQ I'm afraid that's not my problem. I am talking about the fact that when I plug in USB devices, they are not read by my computer, unless I reboot. To everyone else I have tried to load IOUSBMassStorageClass.kext from the terminal. When I do so, the iPod icon appears on the screen, but then I get a message saying that my iPod is not properly recognized, so I should unplug it and plug it again. Of course if I try to do so, the result is the same. Any other suggestions? Do you think I should try to restore IOUSBMassStorageClass from the 10.4.8 extensions? B612
OK. I have made a small research and some tries and I have some news: 1) This problem is caused by 10.4.10. Apparently (almost) every user of 10.4.10 should have this issue. 2) Nobody has ever succeeded so far in solving in a definite way this problem. Many people have suggested different solutions, but none of them effectively works. In fact most of the times, those who have solved this problem were just lucky and they don't know what they've done, basically. 3) Apple has released a 10.4.10 update just to fix these USB issues, but it doesn't work. I have substituted all of my extensions with those of Apple's new 10.4.10 package, but no results. 4) I have also tried to revert some extensions to the previous version (the one of 10.4.9), like IOUSBFamily, IOUSBMassStorageClass, etc, but again no results. 5) the main problem seems to derive from the fact that something doesn't allow IOUSBMassStorageClass to load on boot. So if you load it manually from the Terminal, you can access your USB Drives and your USB printer, but you cannot work with your iPod, because iTunes says there is an error. There must be an extension of 10.4.10 that is buggy and doesn't allow the rest to work properly. Is anybody interested in this topic? I see such a little participation! I would love to know your opinions about it. Thank you and good luck! Beachcomber
Here's what is happening to me, and how I resolved it. Maybe it will be of some use. I am having this issue and am running 10.4.8, not 10.4.10. 1. Make sure you install JaS 10.4.8 with the correct hardware for your machine. I had some serious issues with USB with the default installation; once I set up everything correctly it started to work but with some problems. Prior to that, USB wasn't working at all. After this, USB worked but was sporadic. Anytime I had a USB device plugged in at boot, the system wouldn't boot all the way. Yet occasionally it did work. If I plugged in the USB device once booted, the system slowed to a crawl. Go to step #2. 2. Disable Legacy USB support in your BIOS. 3. Unplug all USB devices and boot your machine. 4. Go to /System/Library/Extensions and drag IOUSBMassStorageClass.kext to your desktop. This will make a copy. Now drag it from /System/Library/Extensions to your Trash and empty it, entering your Admin password. 5. Reboot Once this is done, USB devices (except those in the Mass Storage category) will work. I had to do this to get my USB headphones, keyboard, and trackball to work properly. Otherwise I can't do anything. As mentioned in another post, the problem may be due to a bad signal received from the USB port that is not handled correctly by MacOS. I will try the updated driver out soon, but for now I used my solution because I needed other functions like audio asap rather than iPods and pen drives. If you need to reinstall the IOUSBMassStorageClass.kext, just drag it to the correct place, authenticate, then go to Disk Utility and Repair Permissions. If you don't do this, the driver will have the wrong permissions and will throw an error on boot.
