Do people here really pay for a legal copy of Windows?

I personally most of the time, what I do is when they hand me down not working computers or when at school I copy the Serials On the Proof of Lincence thing and use on all the computer I work with. But It {censored} me off that affer activating it 3 times it doesn't work anymore.

Why Windows can be serial free like OS X?

i never pay for windows, but the reason it isnt serial free is because so many people have computers that can run windows. mac has no serial number because anyone who is going to run it already has bought a mac from them so they dont need to worry about people stealing it as much

Nah, ive never payed for a copy of an OS in my life, and never plan to.

and what`s about that G3 in your sig ?

you didn`t payed licensed os for it ? of the price of os was counted in price of computer ? ^_^

i`ll never pay for windows.for os x maybe ,if sometime i buy mac ... :(

No. And I have a reason. My previous Windows PC, which was a HP M495c was a media center PC, and HP, as usual was dumb enough not to provide me a recovery Windows XP CD. So, I had to make the recovery disks myself using the HP recovery CD/DVD maker tool that came pre-installed. Here is the catch...the CD stopped working after the 3rd re-install, and I could not use it anymore. So, I just pirated a Windows XP Pro SP2. Technically what I did was not wrong, becuase I have a valid serial number that only I can use (provided I don't give it to anyone) that came with the PC...which I paid for.

For OS X Leopard, which I will be upgrading in the future to...yes, I will pay the 129$, becuase the price is affordable, and worth it (looking at the latest build results). But no way in hell will I be dishing out $500 CAD for Vista. That's just outrageous, and Ill probably be pirating it (that too questionable becuase IMO it's not even worth it to even pirate it). I don't care. When it's worth it, I'll pay in a heartbeat, when it's not, the company ain't getting even a penny from me, and that goes for all companies...including Apple.

@ OP, you should make this thread to have a poll option of yes or no. That would make it more interesting. :(

I have only paid the "Windows tax" for 2 prebuilt computers. Since I build desktop computers I don't pay any longer. However if I want to buy a laptop I'll have to.

Ill probably be pirating it (that too questionable becuase IMO it's not even worth it to even pirate it).
:(

I've never paid for Windows but I have paid for Mac. Mac is completely worth it and the way I see it the more money Apple makes the better their stuff will be since they'll be able to spend the extra dough to dev it. Windows on the other hand sucks far too much on any version to pay for it although XP is somewhat tempting since it's the best Windows OS to date.

:P

sorta?

i have VLK's so technically, even if i do pirate a copy, its not illegal for me to use a key i have on it.

but i hardly ever use windows anymore, so it hardly matters.

Ill probably be pirating it (that too questionable becuase IMO it's not even worth it to even pirate it).

^second that [or third?]

I got DOS 3.11 with my first PC. Then with my second, I got Windows 3.11 for Workgroups. I then my parents bought Windows 95 upgrade for my birthday (It was on 3.5 floppies, man that was slow upgrade). Then later on, I got Windows 98 upgrade on cd, I bought this. Later on I got Windows XP for free through my college's Microsoft Academic Alliance. After this, I haven't paid for a Windows os. I got OS X with my iBook. Would I buy Vista? Hell no. OS X? Yes.

Nope, and most likely will never will. Maybe unless I will eventually buy some fancy Falcon-NW computer, where I would rather have everything installed and working with all the hardware perfectly...

Until then, there is really no advantage of buying it or pirating it. I still get the same experience, the same microsoft updates, etc. etc. etc.

Heck, right now I have Windows XP Pro. with an OEM key, and at any desire I can just download "Windows XP Pro. SP2 Student Edition" and just when ever I feel like reinstalling/formating I just download a new image of TL of one that includes all the windows update up to that month and does not require activation(No genuine verification)

Basically, there is really no push I am getting into actually going out an buying it. Because it is and will be the same exact experience, just saving the trip to the store and waiting 20-30 minutes downloading the whole thing, and in no time I have the latest Windows and everything is pretty much the same as if I would have actually went to the store and bought a copy.

Argh! :(

I bought XP. I bought Vista. I bought OS X Tiger. No matter what OS it is, I don't pirate if I plan to use it for more than 2 days or so. In terms of OS(s), software (except for high end creativity software) and games, I don't like to pirate. I had office 2003, and I wanted 07 so... I bought it. However, I had photoshop CS2 and wanted Photoshop CS3E.... I did what most people do.

Windows isn't worth the price they put on it. I'd pay for OSX, and maybe a good, spiced up copy of Linux, but not Windows.

I will never pay ever, unless of course I get it on my laptop (but I don't consider it paying, because I pretty much stole my laptop for the price I got it). As for OS X, I love it, but will never pay. Jobs and Wiosoniak or whatever his name is can kiss my @$$, they are no better than Gates, if not worse (at least Gates is visibly active with his Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation). I will never pay for any OS, I buy hardware not software.

the only windows i "bought" was the ones that came with my desktop (win95) and the one that came with my t43 (winXP)... other than that, i never paid a single cent to get my hands on any release of windows.... Even my spare copies of XP were all not paid for... lol....
