Because iMovie 08 is a complete re-write of the application, and many users feel that it is in many ways inferior to the previous iMovie 6 HD, and have complained about these unwanted changes in iMovie 08, Apple has come to a conclusion. If you purchse iLife 08 now, you can download a free copy of iMovie 6 HD. Both iMovie 6 HD, and iMovie 08, can live happily on the same machine, becauase iMovie 08 moves your iMovie HD to a seperate folder of its own, thus allowing you to run the applications in parallel if need be. EFI Posted August 9, 2007 Author Share Posted August 9, 2007 Hate is a strong word...but I think I can use it perfectly fine for iMovie 08. It's a good thing Jobs mentioned that it was a new app....because if he said it was an upgrade...I would be pretty pissed about now. iMovie 08 is a huge step backwards from iMovie 6 HD. I most frequently use Final Cut Pro...but if I need to do a quick put-together of a video...I always revert to iMovie. I don't see why you cannot do an under 30mins video in iMovie 6 HD....I've done it countless times, and the end results are impressive. That was the lamest marketing lingo ever, IMO. I see it's even better. You can have them both running at the same time. I've never edited a movie but am going to in the next few weeks and so got a bit concerned when EFI made the comments he did on the iLife '08 thread. Especially the lack of a timeline. Now it seems all is good. I'm just wondering how the guy who went on the scuba diving trip and came back and created iMovie '08 is feeling like right about now. Poor guy. IMO it's not the scuba diving guy's fault at all. If anything Apple should be blamed for this, since it was at their final discretion that this app was turned into the next iMovie. They (Apple) could have said no at any point...but they didn't...so it's their fault. They cannot do anything to their engineer either (ie.fire, etc.) becuase it was not his choice...it was Apple's. Yes, I use Final Cut Pro primarily when I have the time needed for the production, however time is not always there. So whenever I ran short of time, I always used iMovie 6 HD...which has all the features needed for a quick video creation. However, the same cannot be said for Movie 08 though, in the sense that if I wanted to switch from Final Cut Pro to iMovie....the features that would make me do a quick creation....are no longer present, which forces me back into Final Cut Pro only as I have no option that I am accustomed to....which in turn will shorten the time even faster. I don't know, but that's just how I feel. After 2 days of using iMovie 08...I went back to 06 HD. I think Ill stick with that for a while. Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

She isn't a total dufus when it comes to computers, has a bit of savy. But she's certainly not a byte-head either. I'm going to watch her using both iMovie 08 and iMovie 06, keeping my pie-hole shut. I get the impression that Apple aimed 08 more to the casual semi-noob market, that's what I read into Job's storytelling about the vacationing programmer. Which is what I was getting at with my comment about your background, you are the anti-noob. I think it'll be interesting to see if they hit my wife. p.s. I wonder if they they are just going to cede the feature-rich market 3rd party developers or if perhaps they plan to roll out a second tier of iMovie eventually. The "dumbed down" one comes with iLife, bundled with a new computer, sort of like the bloatware that came on my wife's Sony laptop, only having some utility. The one with the longer feature list is another $50-$80. EDIT: Or as Paranoid Marvin pointed out, maybe they expect people that want the more advanced features to make the full jump to Final Cut? No, we (as free thinking individuals) need to actually try the app before we go whining like babies that it doesn't meet our needs. Unless you're actually working with it, like EFI is, then you have absolutely no place to voice any premature opinions about the product either way. I've tried it and used it for the past week or so, and my conclusion is this: iMovie '08 is a 100% downgrade to iMovie '06. While it does add some nifty features (mainly scrubbing, which is great), it's just not the handy, useful iMovie that 2006 was. Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
