Takuro
For months it's been speculated that Apple iPod line would get revamped some time after the iPhone's launch. Now many believe new iPods may be arriving as soon as early-mid August. For a while, most sources hinted at a possible touchscreen interface, but new leaks are beginning to prove otherwise. MacRumors has exclusively grabbed what may be the first video captures of the 6th generation iPod user interface. If their source is authentic, the videos lead one to expect a forthcoming iPod with a standard 4:3 screen and clickwheel (contrary to previous reports of a large wide-aspect screen and virtual clicker.) Click here to check out the videos. Taking visual cues from the iPhone, the supposed new iPod interface offers smoother transitions and menu options. A new split-screen view enhances media browsing. CoverFlow may actually still be a viable possibility. Although it cannot yet be confirmed if this is in fact how the 6G iPod's UI will look, there's one thing that cannot be denied: It's pretty darn convincing. Update: As of this morning the Apple legal team requested that MacRumors remove their videos. It seems this is much more than a simple mock-up. Special thanks to Zimmoframe for finding a video mirror on YouTube.
Tetrasoft
Videos dont exist. 404 Error. According to MacRumour, They were removed because of Apples Legal Team. 6th Gen was always around the corner.

kernalzero
and wifi too?? looks like it in the top left corner of sev7en's post; that the black ipod has a wifi symbol. I wouldn't expect internet on the ipod, I imagine that would make it tough competition for the iphone... also the shape of those two ipods aren't the same. The black one is shorter and alittle fatter, while the white one doesn't have that metal border similar to the iphone. things like this make me think these images are fake. too many inconsistencies at this point but who knows, i like how the black one looks

The second one is not real (how could something like that, an ad, leak), and the first image has been around since before the iPhone.
Urbz
another 4:3 screen? in the new 2007 where video downloads are becoming more prominent, how could they give us the same screen and form factor? If there's just a clickwheel, again, this isn't really an upgrade or a refresh. This is a crappy attempt to push out a 'new' iPod. I don't believe this rumor. Especially with all the patent filings we've seen over the past two years. And keep in mind the current 5/5.5 gen iPod has been out, yes, for two whole years. Ouch. I doubt they'd give us more of the same. Not after two years, anyways.
Takuro
I don't like the 4:3 screen either, Urby, but think about it in an unbiased way. Those videos were captured in 4:3 and Apple saw reason enough to have them removed. Either that, or MacRumors is going through a lot of trouble to fool us. As far as patents go, they mean nothing. Apple's filed hundreds and hundreds of patents for concepts they never used. Some of the more interesting patents might be used in their soon-to-expand iPhone line. The iPod might be viewed as a lesser device, just as an iPod Shuffle is to a 30GB iPod. They've kept the same form-factor since the 1st generation iPods, with the exception of the introduction of the "click wheel." I know we all really wanted to see some radical chances, but still, does it really surprise you that much that they kept the old format? There are still a lot of possible new features, like a special multi-touch pad click wheel. The videos really can't give us any of idea of how the new iPods will look, aside from screen aspect ratio. Either way, they're definitely not going to pull the same dumb "refresh" move like when they released the "5.5" generation iPods in September. The new iPods should be different enough to be clearly distinguishable.
.aero
I feel disappointed. Hopefully this is just some early mock up and not what will actually come out. iPhone's interface rules!
cringemaster
I agree with takuro here, as nice as it would be to have the iphones interface on a dedicated ipod, it probably wont happen for a while. Apple has alot of brand recognition resting on the clickwheel. Kinda of topic.. I just realized that at my local wallmart, the ipods over there are labeled as 6G. Apple has alot of brand recognition resting on the clickwheel. theyre not running the same os at all though, so its not just a simple dumbing down, its a full on rewrite.... or it would be. but uh, these rumors dont surprise me, they need gimics for iphone, they dont need to release an iphone with out the phone, because then very fiew would buy the actual iphone. InteliMac Pro
i for one have been waiting for a widescreen iPod since before we even knew about the iPhone. Now that we know Apple has pretty much done it if they release anything but a widescreen iPod there are gonna be a lot of really disappointed people out there. And just because they invented the clickwheel doesn't mean Steve Jobs is gonna let it hold them back from innovation. That would be suicide in an industry where people want something new every day. I for one am sick of the drawbacks of the clickwheel. The iPhone's interface is perfect for an iPod and everybody knows it. Anything less would be a complete let down. Not only that but the interface in those pictures looked like {censored}. That's not innovative. What do you do when the menu item names are longer than half an iPod screen? That just seems like a big step backwards.

That just seems like a big step backwards. I couldn't agree more. I was a real skeptic about the iPhone, but within 30 seconds of looking at the demo model in the Apple store I was hooked on the interface. I loved the scroll wheel & click wheel, but one swipe on the iPhone music list showed me that Apple had done it again. And I would hate to see them come out with what would in effect be crippled, second rate iPods just to shill the iPhone. There are enough features on the iPhone to differentiate it even with the same interface. And while they're at it, it's about time they finally face up to putting Wifi/Safari on the iPod too. Why not just shop on iTunes straight from your iPod? And in 2007, why should I need a cable to sync my iPod? I don't need wires attached to my computer for my audio, video, internet and printer, why have one for my iPod? Holding back on technology you can already deliver is just giving your competition time to catch up.
non sequitur
if you honestly believe that wireless syncing for the ipod is a good idea, then what wireless protocol do you think they should use? because personally i dont have any recollection of something wireless that can transfer a gigabyte movie in about 2-3 minutes. that kind of speed is even slow now. i want firewire dock connectors in the new ipods, its a damn fast connection that would be great for anyone who had a firewire port. Wireless USB supports up to 480 Mbit/s, so it's only 220 Mbit/s slower.
jglavin
From Wikipedia: Wireless USB is based on the WiMedia Alliance's Ultra-WideBand (UWB) common radio platform, which is capable of sending 480 Mbit/s at distances up to 3 meters and 110 Mbit/s at up to 10 meters. From the article it seems like it's out already, but I can't seem to find any devices for sale using it. Maybe it's just waiting for the new iPod. sandmanfvrga
If they go 3.5 inch screen, no widescreen, it will be a shame. I already got that in my Archos 404. I would like the mock up pictures widescreen/touch. That would be nice.

Maybe it's just waiting for the new iPod. It's been out for awhile, but it's just starting to find it's way to users. Maybe if Apple put it in the next iMacs and Macbooks it'll become popular for both platforms.
InteliMac Pro
Well that's the problem with that. None of Apple's computers have wireless USB capability. They'd have to ship a dongle or something with every new iPod. Am I the only one who thinks "dongle" is a hilarious word?
