link
I'm having a problem with booting osx after the windows boot loader. I select osx x86 from my list and it instantly says "Chain booting error". Anyone else have this problem? And know how to fix it? link
hmm. well i installed it kinda different than anyone else. I started by doing it like this one (http://www.360hacker.net/forums/viewtopic.php?t=237&postdays=0&postorder=asc&start=0) but on the first part where it says to use cfdisk, it wouldn't let me because it said my partition was bad. This is where things got a little wonky. I deleted my linux partition from within windows and it's swap partition. both of which are inside of an extended partition with a windows storage drive partition. so in short i had a main primary xp partition then 3 partitions inside of this extended part. I think this is our problem... is that our osx partition isn't a primary part. But where things got weird is that because i deleted my linux partition... GRUB went with it. then nothing would boot up. so i used a slax live disk to cfdisk the partition to type AF then i dd-ed the image to the drive with the skip=63 flag. then i had to fix the master boot record for windows so i did that and then copied the chain0 to my c drive and setup bootini. so i deceded to copy all of my junk off of that storage partition and try and figure out how to make the osx partition a primary one. Anybody know how? i think last time i tried windows wouldn't let me. eightballx
If you are using GRUB do you have "chainloader +1" (without the quotes) in your menu.lst file? this could be the problem HTH -=eightballx=- Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/549-chain-booting-error/#findComment-3578 Share on other sites

And know how to fix it? <{POST_SNAPBACK}> Hi I had the same error message when trying to boot into a darwin partition from windows bootloader, Grub have the error "fhs+ partition error". The solution was to boot off a linux live cd, and change the partition type of the partition with darwin on it to type 'af'. Note: this did NOT wipe/change the partition... link
well mine is set to type AF but do you think yours worked because you changed the type AFTER everything? jegabla
I think I found the fix to this: - Make a primary partition and AF - Format with NTFS (do full, NOT fast format) - Do the rest... People, tell me if it works for you. Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/549-chain-booting-error/#findComment-3719 Share on other sites
nmol010
well mine is set to type AF but do you think yours worked because you changed the type AFTER everything? <{POST_SNAPBACK}> Yes, I had installed the Darwin x86 8.01 but it would not boot off that partition, I then booted off a linux live cd, changed the partition type to 'af' and when I rebooted it worked. EShy
I have OSX on a USB2 drive and WinXP on a SATA drive at first I used dd and deadmoo's VMware image and chain0 worked great. now I installed again with the release1 dvd (which works great), i have no problem booting OSX from the USB drive if I set it as the boot HD in the BIOS, but the chain0 isn't working, so no boot loader for me... If I can't figure out the chain0 problem, I'm considering using grub or some other boot loader, or using the MAC bootloader and adding the HD with winXP as another item in the list Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/549-chain-booting-error/#findComment-13416 Share on other sites
jaexprojectxd
hey guys fpr those having problems ill tell u how i dual booted with XP using the bootloader. In WinXP, I DD'ed the tiger-x86-flat.img.bz2 to the hfs+ partition i made with DiskPart. I then installed Chain0 to the root of my windows partition C: then edit my boot list (Control Panel/System/Advanced/Startup/) then hit EDIT. at the bottom I attached C:\chain0="Mac OS x86" before OSX i had 2 partitions, one for system and the others for dl and etc. i already had the osx image ready for DD. This is in fact easier than the guides to use 2 hard drives or use linux. Merlwiz79
For Windows XP boot.ini THIS WORKS WITH USB HARD DRIVES ALSO First change the Folder options View Show hidden files and folders and uncheck the hide protected operating system files and click OK find boot.ini in your ntfs partitions I say this because my Windows XP System partition is F:\ and boot.ini is on C:\ next open Boot.ini and add C:\boot\chain0="Mac OS X" where c is put your drive for boot.ini it shoul look like [boot loader] timeout=3 default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(2)\WINDOWS [operating systems] multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(2)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Professional" /fastdetect C:\boot\chain0="Mac OS X" save this file might be set to read only so chage it next make the folder boot on your hard drive with boot.ini now put in the install dvd and copy the \usr\standalone\i386\chain0 to boot folder now restart and select Mac OS X and whatch it boot Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/549-chain-booting-error/#findComment-16312 Share on other sites
