I just noticed this:

http://news.com.com/1606-2-6190030.html

Thats a video that summarizes the major parts of Jobs's keynote. Notice what the audience does when he shows them the new desktop. They laugh...

The audience thinks it's another Vista joke, and Jobs is baffled at their reaction. When they realize he's serious, there's a very scattered, weak applause.

Sad.

Hmmm... I just realized something interesting. Apple's hardware hasn't seen a single design change in ages. Do you think their products will inevitably change to reflect the new designs introduced in Leopard?

On the Apple site, it once said something like this:

bezel06282004.jpg

"Apple designers carefully chose this aluminum enclosure to provide a seamless user experience between hardware and software. The Aqua desktop and menubar blend well into the hue of the Cinema Display."

Basically, it said something along these lines. I remember reading it when I was looking to buy a Cinema Display a few months ago. Supposedly the color of the display's aluminum was specially chosen to match Apple's OS to make the thing as a whole look beautiful. Now that Apple is nixing Aqua, I'm seriously wondering of hardware will change in appearance too.

You may be right in the change. On that video, I can't see it here, but they laughed? I really don't think this is "Vista on a Mac". Trasparencies don't equal Vista. *shakes head* Gettign a better look at the new desktop on Leopard on Apple's site, I love it! The iTunes ability to browse files, not going to be used by me but many will. I don't see the griping in that, because like all file managers, there are many views and you won't like all of them. Quick View is awesome and I can't wait to use it. I think Leopard is going to be great.

Yeah. So crappy hey.

Man Apple is falling behind. What the hell is wrong with them? The new desktop sucks - it is just the same except the dock looks {censored} and the menu bar is hard to see. As for the new finder! I HATE the blue and grey thing they have going. It is horrible. As for finder cover flow - talk about system slow downs what a waste of time. All that had to do was copy path finder feature by feature but they couldn't even rip other peoples ideas.

I guess they are too busy "innovating" they can't be bothered to take heed of others peoples successes. Who cares if they copy especially when their innovations suck so much {censored}.

Quick view was kind of cool, but i wonder how fast it actually is. Maybe on a Mac pRo 8 core....

Yeah I am over Apple's innovations. Vista looks way better. Apple!!! get a GUI new design department, thoose guys suck!

Eum, that's the entire point, the menubar and dock would fade in more with your wallpaper. I just recently changed my wallpaper to a very dark one, which didn't go well with the standard menu/dock. So I find this fading thing a very good touch.

And seriously, if your system slows down because of a silly little thing like CoverFlow, get a better system :P

Saying Vista looks better...

Leopard is indeed nothing revolutionairy, but once again they've delivered some nice touches :D

hmmm transparent menubar+dock are nice, but ituneish windows are looking very bad, i hope you can switch back to the old metal skin, somehow

other features are very good, i wonder if my GPU will suffer considering all those transitions

i'm impatient to test leo out

how can you say that when they support machines all the way back to G4. sorry but we cant just stroll out the nearest apple store and but a new computer when we feel that our current computer is a little sluggish. you have to think about the support they are offering and if it extends back all the way to some PPC machines then of course it matters if it slows down the system.

I am extremely disappointed with Jobs Demonstration of leopard. Wow a few crappy new features (minus time machine which probably wouldnt be usefull to me anyway, but still very clever). The whole itunes finder look thing is {censored}, could they not have thought of a new style for the finder? And coverflow? Thats not even usefull in itunes nevermind in the finder, who wants to click through a load of animated documents when they could just scroll down/use spotlight in an instant? Quickview? What a load of {censored}, I would rather wait the extra second to see my document in the actual application.

The new desktop is rubbish in my opinion. When jobs put it up, NO ONE applaused, they laughed! And so did I! I think everyone seriously thought he was taking the mick out of vista again with that hideous grass background and I was just waiting for him to say he was only joking.....and it never came. I totally agree with someone else on here who said that the background is iconic, its easy to stick up when your sick of your photograph or what not and it looks great with the dock.

The new dock? Wow made it a little 3d and gave it a new sickly looking floor? Such innovation, I would of prefered it if they had left it alone. And stacks? In my opinion they look ugly and I dont thin I would benefit from them at all. And who the hell decided on the transparent menu bar? It looks cheap and nasty and FLAT, heck, vistas menu bar looks nicer. And so much for the brand new theme, its basically the platinum look darkened down a little, and it still has aqua bars??

Not one of the new features appeal to me, apart from the maybe the backdrops in ichat, they look like fun, and yet they wont be usefull to me because I dont use ichat because all my friends use MSN.

The whole way through watching the WWDC video I was just expecting jobs to turn around and say ONLY JOKING! and present a magnificent new theme. Also all the features he presented were already known about anyway, wow spaces, they've been around since forever.

This is my impression on leopard so far and I hope to god it changes when the final version is distributed.

Woah, woah slow down. You're so angry that you're starting to flame at the good aspects of Leopard.

No you don't need a crazy octa-core system. Think for a moment about the programs that usually handle movies and pictures: Preview and Quicktime. Do you have any idea how much of the code in those programs is dedicated to editing files, exporting, etc? Quickview is dedicated to viewing and only viewing files, making for a very very very lightweight app that can easily open tons of file formats in a heartbeat. As long as you have a 1 GHz processor, it should prove its worth.

And coverflow? Thats not even usefull in itunes nevermind in the finder, who wants to click through a load of animated documents when they could just scroll down/use spotlight in an instant?

From everybody I've read reviews from, skeptics and critics included, Coverflow actually proves to be one of the best features of Leoapard. In iTunes, it was just eye candy. Personally, I don't remember the name of every document I've ever made, so Spotlight isn't a be-all-end-all solution. Thumbnails are good, but if you make them a decent size so that the contents of text documents are actually identifiable, scrolling manually is tedious. That's where Coverflow steps in. Also, it's not like they're getting rid of grid and list views. If you don't like it, just don't click the little "Coverflow" button in Finder! And if it really bothers you, customize the Finder toolbar to get rid of the Coverflow button. :)

When jobs put it up, NO ONE applaused, they laughed!

I agree there. Natures shots are nice, but it doesn't take much effort. When he said "we decided not to make a blue wallpaper for Leopard because we realized nobody uses it" I cringed and said to myself "there he goes... Steve Jobs making up statistics just to boost his own opinion." Maybe it doesn't have to be Aqua, but they should attempt to make some kind of wallpaper. Heck, even Vista has its own iconic wallpaper.

...and it still has aqua bars??

For duh last time it's FEATURE complete, not GUI complete. All traces of Aqua are gonna be phased out.

The whole way through watching the WWDC video I was just expecting jobs to turn around and say ONLY JOKING!

Eh, gotta admit. There were a handful of times I was half expecting it, and I think the audience was too.

But then itunes 7 must be a cruel joke that's lasted several months, eh?

so why would you stereotype americans like that? do you think we are all drowning in enough money to buy an

I didn't say for ALL americans. I KNOW not every American is rich or stuck up. Like I didn't say that every blond woman is a blonde Paris-hilton bimbo.

iphone. were not all stuck up ok. and if we are yuppies then what are you, a stuck up euro?

Nope. I'm not a stuck up eurotrash-hole. Though there are lots of them in here (I mean the country where I am in, not these forums). I hate them as much as those "stereotype" americans.

Fact is that the iPhone is about the most expensive celphone on the market. Made in China for scraps offering huge profit for Apple while they charge enormously for it. Targetting the more wealthy ppl (and even a small percentage of it as well since it's only usable in the US). The ppl who would buy a Vertu for themselves and an iPhone for the kids. While the Apple adds probably wet the more general ppl's appetite.

Can't believe you like that too.

No offense, but many of your "impressions" are ill advised.

First off "And coverflow? Thats not even usefull in itunes nevermind in the finder". Not even useful huh? Maybe to you but to me and many coverflow is a very valuable feature. Plus like many have said, Finder will allow you to change your view and you will never have to use it. Plus coverflow will be invaluable to those that have pictures/multimedia. Just because you don't need it doesn't mean it is {censored}.

Second, "Quickview? What a load of {censored}, I would rather wait the extra second to see my document in the actual application. " Again, for those with pictures etc Quickview is invaluable. {censored}? No.

Third, "he was taking the mick out of vista again with that hideous grass background ". Ok, so a nature shot of grass and dew is Vista? Sorry to tell you and many others, but grass isn't a Microsoft invention. Those that laughed at him needed to get over Vista and move on.

Fourth, "And who the hell decided on the transparent menu bar? It looks cheap and nasty and FLAT, heck, vistas menu bar looks nicer.". I don't see the damn f***ing point on the transparent bar!! S**t, people have been skinning OS X for months or more to add Vista stuff in and now when Apple adds the ability in it is whine/{censored}/moan. New idea: Turn it off and get over it if you don't like it! Sheesh.

Fifth, "still has aqua bars??". What part of "beta" don't you get?

Sorry to be tearing into you, but damn I am so tired of the whining. This site is full of whiners and when a keynote comes, boo hoo city. Nobody is EVER satisfied. EA's announcement was huge and Leopard was great. Plus it is still beta with 4 months to go and people need to CHILL OUT. Leopard will be great and the features you do not want to use, DON'T USE THEM. Why is it so hard to get that through to people? If I come off as an ass, my apologies but many people need to calm down and let Apple GROW.

Wow... That was just... yeah...

Leopard looks like a wannabe Vista with Project: Looking Glass slapped onto it. I'm not really sure what to say. I really think that the only announcement that grabbed my attention was the release of the Safari 3 beta for Windows and OS X, although Flash and Java on Safari for Windows doesn't seem to work. :o

Man, all this negative...

I for one can't wait for Leopard to be released.

My new MacPro can hold 16 gigs of ram.... :)

I will have 4 -2 gig sticks in mine once my G4 is sold.

I'd like to be able to use all that ram in Logic Pro with all my soft synths etc.

Ya the grass was slightly startling, but I'd bet Leopard will come with many "themes" for looks.

So are we saying if we all had a copy on our desks you wouldn't install it and never look back at Tiger?

Ya right.

I know what a beta is and like I said I hope my impressions change when the final version is distributed, and I would never skin os x to look like vista :)

I know, but many have tried Aero on OS X and thus transparencies. Transparencies are fine, as long as you can turn them off.
