alvin777
Hi. Does anyone know a good equivalent for OS X of these two Windows stress test programs: Prime95 and Orthos? Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/51794-stress-test-for-os-x/ Share on other sites
sarahbau
CPUTest looks like it's similar. Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/51794-stress-test-for-os-x/#findComment-370138 Share on other sites
Dewdman42
CPUTest definitely puts a full load on the computer and you can watch the temps. It seems to do some error checking, but its unclear to me what exactly is being done. Does anyone know if there is a utility that will basically test out every operation possible with the CPU and EFI to make sure there are no errors? I guess XBench probably tries out an awful lot of stuff, but I don't know how much error checking it does. Basically I would like to verify that OX86 is working fine on my system. It seems to be working fine, but every once in a while it will shut down the OS for no apparant reason. It seems to happen more often if I am running VMWare Fusion, but not exclusively. Anyway, just wondering if there are any test utilitities that might help me nail down the cause or at least just try to run a bunch of different operations to test basic stuff related to EFI more than anything I guess. knewsom
I'd second the desire for a thorough test for X86... but I've used CPUTest and I'm definitely a fan. Great way to have a look at your CPU, especially if you're OCing. Dewdman, when your comp shuts down, is it when you're using it? Or if you've left it for a bit? Because initially when I had installed Leo, I noticed that it would shut off the computer periodically, but when I looked into it further, I noticed that sleep would shut down the computer and that sleep was set to automatically happen after 30 minutes or so, as that is the default setting. I also had a peek at my BIOS and noticed that I had it on the wrong sleep setting... once corrected, the problem went away. Dewdman42
Thanks for those tips. I will look into it. I left the computer on all night and it did not shutdown. But its usually while I'm working, I click the mouse and it goes bam. I also bumped up my Vcore a bit just to make sure its not related to the mild OC I have going which had already passed Windows stress tests. I tested with CPUtest also and no errors. But I'll check the BIOS and OSX sleep settings, thanks for the tip. Otherwise, I can't believe how well Kalyway works. I mean, audio, net, vid card, everything...just worked out of the box...So far, I have thrown a bunch of apps at it and other than this sporadic quitting, everything seems to be working. Amazing. I might end up buying a real mac this way though. Doh. MacUser2525
Hi. Does anyone know a good equivalent for OS X of these two Windows stress test programs: Prime95 and Orthos? For Prime95 you can use the Mac version (mprime) on the page below. http://www.mersenne.org/gimps/ Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/51794-stress-test-for-os-x/#findComment-738875 Share on other sites

Dewdman42
I also just discovered that prime95 runs under Wine just fine. I have it running right now and it already helped me spot that I needed to bump up the vcore a tad on my overclocking. vaporATX
I always put a small partition with a stripped down XP install with all the overclocking tools and boot into that. Testing overclocks on your working system is silly and just asking for trouble. Plus, all the best utilties are windows only. Load out is as follows: XP with all latest chipset drivers and such built with nLite, Prime95 v25.6, OCCT, CoreTemp, CPUz, Memtest+ bootable usb key, MemSet, SetFSB, and Everest. Also add what ever GPU utils you need. Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/51794-stress-test-for-os-x/#findComment-749798 Share on other sites
Dewdman42
You make a good point. I'm still in experimental stages. I actually plan to wipe this disk and install everything from scratch after I finish experimenting with everything and decide it all works, including OSX. But I will definitely be planning to setup dual boot scenario with XP on another partition. I had not really thought of a super small partition to use for overclock testing and not have to worry about corrupting the installation. Good idea. I also want to install a linux boot partition possibly. Anyway, I digress... vaporATX
It make good sense. I've only corrupted system partitions a handful of times over the years, but it does happen... just not too often. When/if it does you can recover the small partition quickly from an image and go back at it. Makes life simple.
