mac-n-cheeze
Folks, I'm not quite sure what confusion is all about... We've got contributors unhappy about the price, some questioning the real need for this kind of CPU horsepower and others bemoaning the inefficiencies of their Solar PV arrays. What's the quandary? Apple has always been about differentiation (except during the "beige years" when they tried to be just like other PC's but no one wants to dwell there) and OSX+2xQuadCore=nothing-else-like-it-on-the-market. Do we need it? Most of us, no, of course not. Do we want it? Yes, of course most of us do and BTW, when can we expect the 2x8 Core Mac Pro's? Let's face it, there's not a truck load of multiprocessor aware applications out there so it's fair to assume that Apple will be announcing upgrades to their suite of professional A/V software titles in the very near future to support/justify the need for this hardware. Make no mistake, this is by design aimed at a niche market. Full disclosure: I've been a Steve Jobs/Apple/Mac/ supporter since the very early days, not because I'm a blind fanatic but because I appreciate the opportunity to approach things in a different way, getting the job done and maybe even enjoying the experience. When Apple went Intel, I lost sleep. Intel is the equivalent of mainstream [read Satan] as far as I was concerned but now that I own a MacBook Pro, iMac and Mac Pro (Quad Core) all with Intel CPU's I've come to realize how nonsensical my insomnia really was. The Apple experience really isn't about what or how many CPU's are under the hood, it's all about getting from "here to there" whatever that means for you and for me. Let's keep hoping that Apple continues to push the desktop and workstation computing experience (hardware + software) to places and price-points still within the realm of mere mortals and even the Pro's. Take a look at what Sun Microsystems is asking for comparable configurations and I'm sure you'll understand the very long-winded point I've been trying to make. Enjoy! mac_n_cheeze.
