[How To] Dual-head Dual-boot Silent BadAxe2/Core2Duo/GeForce 7600/10.4.9 Build

OK, I fixed the FSB issue. I followed the directions too closely. The <key>kernel flags</key> must be upper case.

<key>Kernel Flags</key>

Now my processor shows at 2.39 GHz. Not sure why not 2.40.

xbench now shows faster results.

this also fixed the clock time being too fast so time was not right.

not sure, but there now seems to be a half second lag when loading or swtiching to a app that started after fixing the FSB. anyone notice this?

10.4.9 Upgrade:

The very first thing to do is run the "JaS.10.4.9.Combo.Update.Intel.SSE3.pkg" app. The install is very straightforward, just select your OSX partition and click "Install". You'll be prompted for your password.

The installer sets a default front-side-bus (FSB) speed of 200MHz, but for an e6300 it should be 266. Use your favorite technique to edit /Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration/com.apple.Boot.plist. I open Terminal and use vi. Change the "Kernel Flags" section so it looks like:

<key>Kernel Flags</key>

<string>fsb=266</string>

While you're in there, if you want to be able to choose which OS to boot, add the following lines to give a 4-second boot menu:

<key>Timeout</key>

<string>4</string>

After saving the file, reboot. I've been through this process about 6 times, and a few times I was able to continue on to the below steps without rebooting, but the last two tries, I got a crash when trying to mount the MPIP image if I didn't reboot first, so better safe than sorry.

Firstly thanks for a wonderful Guide gdog :)

This is my very first Hackintosh,

so this tutorial have been so helpful

But I am having a little trouble understanding how i am supposed to fix this fsb 200 > fsb 266

this is as far as i got,

first i open my "Mac Os X" drive.

then i find my way down to

/Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration/com.apple.Boot.plist

when i get to the "com.apple.Boot.plist" folder

i get confused as to what i should do next..

i have tried opening this folder

but i do not know what application to use..

have OpenTerminalHere

but i am not sure if it is the right one or how to use it????

Edit. Kiko and Ramm sent me on the right track with the use of TextEdit

so problem is solved :D

Gdog, I just built my second osx86 system, this time, following your specs with the exception of I'm using an ATI X1600XT pci-e video card that works great with ATIRadeonX1000. Very painless...Thanks! The only two things not working appear to be the 'mic in' and the 'marvell sata buss'. Any ideas on how to get them both working? So far, this board works great under Windows. The first system I built was around a GA-965P-DQ6, and OSX86 worked well, but I wasn't happy with the boot time when in AHCI mode. The BAD AXE2 is much improved. BTW, it does seem very necessary to do the Bios update that you mention.

I thought I would add that I took advantage of the lower prices for Ram at Newegg.com and installed two sticks of the following on this motherboard. It appears to be very stable while rendering in Adobe Premiere Pro. The full 4gb appears in the bios, 3.25gb under WinXP Pro32, and 4gb under Vista Ultimate 64 and Mac OSX 10.4.9. Hope this helps someone else considering a Ram purchase.

Also, this ram did not play well with an ASUS P5B Premium Vista motherboard. Bios would only pick up 3gb. It was stable, but only showed 2.93gb under WinXP Pro32 and a little over 3gb under Vista Ultimate 64 and Mac OSX 10.4.9.

Rhalls, I also tried just copying my GA-965P-QD6 image to this Bad Axe 2 system and had less than desirable results. The results published above are the result of a fresh install following Gdog's instructions to the letter (except for the graphics card). I admit results could be better. Also, under OSX86, not too much difference between q6600 and qx6700.

Here are my results. My hard drive is a 7200.10. Have not really compared to see if it was good or bad. One drive is PATA and the other SATA.

<key>Kernel Flags</key>

Good catch! I updated the original post with the upper casing.

gdog, what are you using for sound in?

I haven't tried any kind of sound in -- I just haven't had the need. I found an old microphone lying around so I'll try it out and see what happens...

I have a SATA optical drive in my old hackintosh. It worked fine with Jas 10.4.8 and the upgrade to 10.4.9. I've been running the system I built following your tut for 3 weeks as my main system. Only boot XP 2/3 times a week to get something off it. Apart from some USB mass storage problems that seem to have gone away, it's been 100% solid. Great choice of hardware. Thanks.

Something I've noticed on several different machines I've built is that the USB ports on the front of the case (i.e. those connected to the motherboard via cable) are much less reliable than the USB ports on the back (i.e. those built-in to the motherboard). The problem is especially bad for devices which need to get power over USB.

If I hook my iPod to the front connector, the sync fails after a couple minutes. On the back, it's fine. Same with my Secure Digital card reader for my camera. However, if I hook my camera itself to the front USB via the cable that came with the camera, it works fine, I'm assuming because the camera has a big battery, but the SD card reader isn't powered.

  • 2 weeks later...

I built a machine like this following this guide and it works perfectly!

Sys:

Bad Axe 2

Core 2 Duo E6000

Corsair 2048MB 6400PRO Twin2X 5-5-5-12

Club 3D 7600GT 256GB

1x Seagate 74GB for OSX and backups

2x raptor 36GB striped (raid0) for Applications and User account

Things I need to do:

- Frontrow with mouse (tried Backrow but that doesn't play nice with my applications on another volume)

- Install my watercooling for overclocking the E6600

I only had to buy the Bad Axe, E6600, 7600GT and Ram since I already had everything else.

Costs: 750 euro

**wow** thanks for that nice tutorial...!!

but i have a question - from where do i get that jas.10.5.9 combo update? torrent? please pm me a link or post it here... i got the bad axe 2 with e6600 running at 2x 3009.6MHz - nice machine... but i can't get sound and dual monitoring working because of that missing jas10.4.9 update.

so please help me, to join you all with a nice running machine..!

thank you..!

Here are my results.. i honestly expected more. im using an Nvidia Quadro FX 4300 now but i have a 7950gt on its way.

hirschkuh2000, sound and dual-display should have nothing to do with 10.4.9, so that shouldn't be holding you up. However, 10.4.9 is just a torrent. I just entered the filename (JaS.10.4.9.Combo.Update.Intel.SSE3) in google and had no trouble.

i have read you cannot use the marvel ports, but I have not tested it totally. I did plug into those the marvel connectors because the manual does not really tell you that the blue connectors are marvel and black are the other sata connectors. The blue did not work, only the black sata connectors.

most people in these forums will say that the badaxe2 is the best choice for really using it as your main machine and not just playing around.

my experience. rock solid stability. gigalan works great. no sound in. so you have have to get a firewire or usb sound in.

start up is not as fast as I would like, be mostly due to the nait drivers. supposedly the Titan drivers don't slow the startup.

temp monitor does not show the correct CPU temp. seems to be off by 10 to 12 degrees.

first I was concerned because the CPU was going over 60 degrees sometimes. Intel support said that there is nothing to worry about. the bios will shut the computer down if it gets too hot. has not happened, so all good.

Haven't tried. Didn't want 8 SATA, but chose this MB because of its compatibility and stability running OSX. If you find and build with a cheaper stable MB with working gig-e, sound, etc., let me know! I'll keep it in mind for next time...

Does everyone get the marvell 4 sata ports to work??

Otherwise i might as well get any MB with 4 ports, its cheaper :thumbsup_anim:

FYI I've just recently gotten around to doing some overclocking of my original config. Starting from the default 1,860 MHz, I moved up to 2,004 MHz for a few days, and am currently running at 2,100 MHz. I'm using the heat sink / fan that came with the Core2Duo, so I'm paying a lot of attention to my temperatures and am not planning on going any higher than 2,100 MHz. According to TemperatureMonitor I'm idling around 47C and am in the mid-50s if I'm doing a lot of work on the machine. I think I can safely lower the vCore a bit more to cool things off another degree C or two.

FYI I just updated to 10.4.10 using the netkas/PascalW package. Everything went smoothly. Two things: do NOT check the box for "install 10.4.10 graphic kexts", and after the install, re-run the AppleHDAPatcher for the Sigmatel audio.

I meant to make a partition clone so I could try out the koolkal 10.4.10 update too, but forgot. Oops.

gdog, did you also install the apple audio update for 10.4.10? have you noticed any audio issues?

notice any speed improvements? this update was suppose to provide intel chip speed improvements.

I had originally purchased a SONY NEC 7170A DVDRW drive, but an NEC ND-3550A dvd drive that I had for a little over a year died and I decided to return the new NEC drive and got a Pioneer.

The Pioneer DVR-112D is much quieter running, almost silent. The drive tray opening and closing is also super quiet.

They both work with Toast and boot the OS and speed seems comparable.

Neither work with Retrospect. So I installed an older Sony CDRW drive I had that did work.

A couple weeks later I needed to boot using the DVD and could not get the system to boot.

Got an error about the missing boot file on the DVD; com.apple.Boot.plist not found.

I did several hours of testing and trying different things. The only thing that fixed it was to disconnect the CDRW drive from the IDE and have only DVD drive connected to the IDE. Then it booted from the DVD disk fine.

gdog, also, did you get your USB reader issue solved? I have a San Disk ImageMate 8 in 1 USB 2.0 that works fine when connected to the front usb. It transfers fast and have not had any issues.

Anyone getting stability problems? I keep having applications crashing or I get the shutdown screen at times just doing occasional web browsing or watching a movie. I followed this guide step by step except I check the nVidia ktexts with th JAS 10 so I can get the native QE 1920x1200 other than that everything is the same....

My system is very stable. when I first setup my OZ memory it was suppose to be 4-4-4-15 at 1.9v. I had to manually set because the system was seeing the memory at 5-5-5-15. The system was a little unstable with those memory settings, so I set it back to auto and 5-5-5-15 because I did not want to set the memory to 2.1v as OZ forums indicated.
