bruin4life
Alright. Here goes the story. Read the specs of my computer in my sig. I had bought this setup in October. Ever since the early days of 10.4.8, I had the infamous dual core stutter. My installation was JaS's original 10.4.8. Installation went well. I performed all the hacks needed to get sound, ethernet, video, etc. working. However, my computer stuttered every minute or so. Since I have a core2duo, i was suffering from the infamous stutter syndrome that every one else had. When Semthex started his new kernel builds, eventually the stuttering disappeared. Fast forward a couple months when i wanted create a new installation. Installed everything just the way it was, except my STUTTERING CAME BACK! I was furious. I hated that feeling of having you're cursor freeze for 20 seconds and nothing happens. For months i researched this ENTIRE site. Read every post their was about the issue, jotted down notes, tried different things (deleted kexts, added stuff in bootlist, swapped hard drives, etc), and basically researched the entire internet including the various Linux forums on what this problem could be. Some said Kernel, others here on this forum said "ACPI" and stopped. All I know is that if this problem was fixed once, why is it back? That's what kept me going. And how come the AMD X2 guys fixed their issue by changing multiplier settings in the BIOS. I approached the problem like an engineer. Yesterday, I went to my local Fry's and bought 2 motherboards. One totally different (Asus P5W DH) and one same (Asus P5B Deluxe). I first put in the P5W, installed OSX, and noticed that if the hard drive controller was set to Generic AHCI, the stuttering was there. But if I changed it to Serial-ATA IDE mode, problem disappeared! Also, in System Profiler, the Hard drive controller would show up as ICH7R! When I plugged in the Asus P5B, I could only get OSX to install if I had set the HD to AHCI. But it would stutter like crazy (same as my own). When I switched it to IDE mode in the bios, OS X won't boot ("Still waiting for root device"). The funny thing was, in my original OS X installation, I was able to switch it back to IDE without a problem. WHY WASN'T I able to do it now?!!!! The only thing different from my first installation was that I used a newer JaS install CD with ICH7R/8R patch. My Hard Drive controller on the p5b is an 8R. But this patch didn't work for me, but it only worked for the 7R. So my only hope was to find the original install cd (JaS 10.4.8) and search what was different than the newer ones. A short while passed by and BAM! Apparently there was an ICH8.pkg on the original install DVD. No wonder I was able to run my original installation in IDE mode. Long story short: installed the package, restarted, changed setting in BIOS to IDE, bingo.... So for ALL you DELL users with ICH8R and stuttering. You need the ICH8.pkg from the original OS X 10.4.8 JaS DVD. Sorry for the long-windedness, but I had to get this out. 5 months of torture, finally i feel the weight off my shoulders.
