I found a software bug in 10.4.11, Premiere CS3 does not work but Photoshop cs3, dreamweaver cs3 and flash cs3 works fine. I will try after effects cs3 later on.

Edit: I just tested after effects cs3 and does not work either :(

I had problems with updates after installing the new Kernel. I found that if I updated my system from 10.4.8 all the way up to the 10.4.11 with the guide it works great. I upgraded my kernel AFTER all the updates and I had no issues.

I dont know if it is just my system, but I recomend doing the kernel upgrade once ann the updates are done.

Hi Zero!

Which kernel are you using now? And where did you find it?

Thanks

yep:) i confirm this guide works. i started with kalyway 10.4.10 and followed this guide ending up with 4.11. thanks a lot for this. my rigs on the screenshot. first reboot took a while but now everythig seems to be ok. i didn't follow the GMA950 advice but once again. everything is ok. cant feel any difference from 4.10 but i just hope it added something good:)

I WAS using 8.9.1 kernel that I got from the IRC mentioned in the guide. I am having a problem with DMG files now I might add. I have searched for solutions but it does not seem to work for me. I dont know the cause of this but I re-installed OSX and I had the problem happen again. I recall someone bringing this up some place in this forum, but I dont know where I had seen it.

Anyone have this problem?

Must say this process worked very well! I went from 10.4.8 to 10.4.9 to 10.4.10 to 10.4.11. Just did the same process as explained in the beginning of the article, and it all worked very well! All the apps I have on the bottom of my screenshot have been working well for me. Thanks again!

I don't know what happened, I was doing the Upgrade, typed everything in, did the install of 10.4.11 then now its waiting to reboot i went to do the rest of the commands but it didn't seem to copy anything that was in the Extensions Folder this is what i typed

jeff-karpalas-computer:~ karpala$ sudo -s

Password:

jeff-karpalas-computer:~ root# cp /mach_kernel /old

jeff-karpalas-computer:~ root# cp -R /System/Library/CoreServices/loginwindow.app/ /

jeff-karpalas-computer:~ root# cp -R /System/Library/Extensions/AppleSMBIOS.kext/ /

jeff-karpalas-computer:~ root# cp -R /System/Library/Extensions/AppleACPIPlatform.kext/ /

jeff-karpalas-computer:~ root# cp -R /System/Library/Extensions/AppleAPIC.kext/ /

jeff-karpalas-computer:~ root# cp -R /System/Library/Extensions/IOATAFamily.kext/ /

jeff-karpalas-computer:~ root# cp -R /System/Library/Extensions/System.kext/ /

the kernel copied, and the loginwindow.app copied. but nothing from the Extensions folder did, I <tab>'d to finish everything, so I didn't spell the things wrong, the machine knew the stuff was there.

jeff-karpalas-computer:~ root# cp /old /mach_kernel

jeff-karpalas-computer:~ root# cp -R /loginwindow /System/Library/CoreServices/

jeff-karpalas-computer:~ root# cp -R /AppleSMBIOS.kext /System/Library/Extensions/

cp: /AppleSMBIOS.kext: No such file or directory

this is all i have in /

jeff-karpalas-computer:/ root# ls

.DS_Store Backups Network bin mach mach_kernel.4 tmp

.Spotlight-V100 Contents PlugIns cores mach.sym mach_kernel.bad usr

.Trashes Desktop DB System dev mach_kernel mach_kernel.old var

.hotfiles.btree Desktop DF Users etc mach_kernel.1 old version.plist

.vol Info.plist Volumes kernel mach_kernel.2 private

Applications Library automount loginwindow mach_kernel.3 sbin

now I'm really affraid to reboot.

any other way I can get a copy of those files?

what do you think i should do?

UPDATE:

Well I'm an idiot, and left the / at the end of each one. so it just copied what was in them. so I have the System.kext, but none of the other ones. I was looking on my DVD and there is no /System/Library/Extensions folder so i don't know where I can get those other files.

ajhutton: Oh man, thanks! I was on 10.4.9, do you think they will work? or do I need 10.4.9 files?

I'm at work now So I can't test til I get home.

EDIT:

If I do end up needing the 10.4.9 files, which I assume I probably do. Probably would have helped if I said in my first post I was going from 10.4.9. is there a way to get them off the uphuck 10.4.9 DVD? With out installing it again?

If i just boot from the CD then open terminal, when i try and go to that folder, there is no "/System/Library/Extensions/". Are they located somewhere else? Would i have to try and install it on a different HDD and then get the files off of that? The files have to be somewhere?

I feel like an idiot. hah.

Update:

ajhutton: Thanks so much! the files work, back in osx. It was epic trying to get them on here though, my only other machine is XP, and I formatted a USB stick as Fat32, but when I boot from the OSX DVD it wont let me mount that. and windows wont read anything other than Fat/NTFS. ended up having to have my buddy on his Linux laptop install HFS tools, which was being a pain, and copy the files from one Fat32 USB Stick to an HFS USB Stick. but after all of that I could finally mount it. and I copied the files over, leaving the trailing / off this time

booted up fine, just had to re add the sound patch, and powermanagment.bundle, everything else seems to be good

I recall it too. I think your System.kext is not of the same version as your kernel. I've updated to osx 10.4.11 but my kernel is 8.10.1 so I use System.kext from osx10.4.10 update package.

By the way, anyone got a hacked kernel 8.11.1, other than the one is irc.osx86.hu(which doesn't work for me, efi or non-efi).

Steps to update to 10.4.9/10.4.10 without new kernel:

1) Open up the terminal and type "sudo -s" then "your password" then the following (line by line):

CODE

cp /mach_kernel /old

cp -R /system/library/coreservices/loginwindow.app /

cp -R /system/library/extensions/AppleSMBIOS.kext /

cp -R /system/library/extensions/AppleACPIplatform.kext /

cp -R /system/library/extensions/AppleAPIC.kext /

cp -R /system/library/extensions/IOATAFamily.kext /

cp -R /system/library/extensions/system.kext /

2) Keep terminal open.

3) Open disk utility and keep it open

4) Run the delta installer (AND DO NOT RESTART---IGNORE THE INSTALLER WINDOW)

5) Open terminal and type the following:

CODE

cp /old /mach_kernel

cp -R /loginwindow.app /system/library/coreservices/

cp -R /AppleSMBIOS.kext /system/library/extensions/

cp -R /AppleACPIplatform.kext /system/library/extensions/

cp -R /AppleAPIC.kext /system/library/extensions/

cp -R /IOATAFamily.kext /system/library/extensions/

cp -R /system.kext /system/library/extensions/

rm -rf /system/library/extensions.*

6) Open disk utility and repair permissions for your OS X partition

7) Pray and restart the system (unless you have GMA 900 or GMA 950--> read below)

8) Post pictures of your 10.4.9/10.4.10

I did that to update 10.4.8 JaS to 10.4.9, 10.4.10 and 10.4.11 and never had a single problem.

Now - full of hope - I did the same to update ToH RC2 Leopard to 10.5.1 and it - again - it did work!!!

Everything is fine!!! Thank you!!!

My sys:

Prescot 3.0 HT

P4P800-E-DeLuxe (Marvell: OK - AC97: OK - FireWire: OK - USBBT: Motorola PC850: OK)

2 GB RAM

FX5700 Ultra (Dual Monitors with NVInject 0.1.15 for Leo and CI: Hardware Accelerated and QE: Supported ;) )

IDE and SATA (All OK but Promisse Controller, only ICH5)

Hi, i use 10.4.10 and 10.5.1 on my Desktop machine , works !!!

I plan to buy an Intel CPU (420M) notebook with GMA 950 / SATA HD. (ICH-7-M)

Q:

It seems that there are much problems using GMA950 with Leopard.

Is 10.4.10 or.11 working with GMA950 (using known methods) ?

I can upgrade the notebook with T2050/T2060 Intel Core Duo CPU.

Can 10.4.10 / 10.4.11 handle that 2 CPU kerns or must i disable one CPU kern (by kernel -CPU=1)

or use EFI Patch ?

Thanks

Do i just install everything and not upgrade the kernel?

thanks in advance!

IT WAS GREAT!!!! :(:)

I could finally upgrade my Toshiba Satellite A55 Notebook to 10.4.11 with just one problem.

Thanks man,

you are great.

Of course i did not upgrade my kernel to the latest. Do you guys think I can upgrade it, now that I have 10.4.11?

And the problem is just when i click on "About this Mac", my mac logout and again login automatically.

But it's not a big deal.

Thanks again

Bob

eeeek... I just updated the OS to 10.4.9 (I used JaS 10.4.8 for the install) and then upgraded the kernel and now can't mount DMGs. I reverted to my old System.kext but that didn't did the trick either. I tried with the System.kext backup I made and with the one from JaS' DVD.

Is it posible to be related to something kernel-specific and not this System.kext? ... I'm kinda new to OS X ;). Thanks for any help you can give me.

BTW: Great guide!

Jesus Christ! It was unbelievable!! :(

I searched so many places for how to upgrade my desktop leopard to 10.5.1. I tried a test with this guide. IT WORKED!. and something thankfully i mentioned. I do not have so many problems that people mention with their CPU fan speed after upgrading or other problems. Thanks god, I think this mother board is really perfect for mac os. ;)

OH/ PS//

Does anybody by any chance, know that how i can use my skystar2 DVB-S card on my mac? I just have to use stupid windows only for my Satellite TVs. I tried driver provided by www.defyne.org, but it is useless and the site also was is not updated since last year.

CPU: Dual Core 2 Duo 1.6

MotherBoard: GA-Gigabyte 965P-DS3 Ver.1.0

HDD: 3 SATA

RAM: 2GB
